Unfortunately, my recent visits have left me feeling increasingly unwelcome, uncomfortable, and, most recently, humiliated. Dekes recently implemented a no-dog policy, which I can respect. However, they've offered no practical alternative for customers who walk their dogs while getting their morning coffee. Delray is a walkable community, and for many downtown residents, this is part of our daily routine. I've tried to accommodate the policy, even asking strangers outside to briefly hold my dog's leash while I order. This morning, rather than being met with understanding, I was embarrassed about how I was ordering and told I should do what others do and leave my dog in the car. When I expressed my frustration, the employee responded, "We're just doing what's best for us." Well, that much is clear. Unfortunately, customer appreciation and hospitality no longer seem to be part of that equation. What makes this especially disappointing is the years of loyalty and support. I've recommended Dekes to countless people, purchased their coffee as holiday gifts, and supported their growth. My boyfriend even contributed $500 to their second-location fundraiser because he knew how much I loved this place. He never received so much as a thank-you email. I don't expect special treatment, but I do believe kindness, gratitude, and genuine hospitality should be the foundation of a business that was built on community. My suggestion? Add Dale Carnegie's *How to Win Friends and Influence People* to the reading list. How you make people feel matters just as much as the coffee you serve. It's sad to see a place I once loved lose the warmth that made it special. As for me, I won't be returning for my morning coffee with a side of shame.
