I was visiting town for my cousin's wedding. On Sunday around 10:40 before we were (supposed) to fly out of town, my sister, husband and I wanted to try out a new coffee shop on the way to the beach. I ordered an iced cappuccino with whole milk and honey (they only offer 2 milks - whole and a homemade cashew milk). We got our drinks and proceeded to the beach. Sip 1, I started to feel funny and thought there was no way they didn't put whole milk in my drink. 2nd sip, and my whole body began to sweat, throat started to tingle, and I began losing strength and energy. Surely enough, the barista had made my drink with the homemade cashew milk. I'll spare you the details of the proceeding traumatizing events of my anaphylactic shock, but I am thanking the lord I was with people I love, had my EpiPen, and that the ambulance EMTs, and doctors at Bethesda Memorial ER were wonderful and attentive. I would like to acknowledge who I believe was the owner. He overheard my sister run into the cafe to ask the barista what kind of milk was in the drink. After she left the barely-drank drink on the counter and ran out, he chased us down the sidewalk when we were rushing back to our hotel and offered us Benadryl he had on hand. Obviously, he did not realize how severe the situation was and the Benadryl exited my body just a few minutes later, but it was kind of him to do. I am writing this review as both a warning to patrons to verify the ingredients in their drinks before drinking them if they have life-threatening food allergies like me (I obviously wish I had heeded my own advice). I am also writing this as hopefully a wake-up call for the employees of Deke's: food safety is your #1 priority as a food and beverage establishment. You offer only TWO milks. I asked for one of the milks, and you gave me the other, which was a milk made with 1 of the country's 9 major food allergens (tree nuts). This is not a situation of me not liking my drink - this is a matter of life or death. I was lucky enough to be with people I love and have a life-saving medical device at my hotel that I was able to use when my body was being deprived of oxygen and shutting down on itself. Some people are not so lucky. While I am sure you take pride in the drinks you are making, I am urging you to take more care for the people who are drinking them. read more

Deke's is a fantastic specialty coffee/espresso bar. I HIGHLY recommend it if you enjoy the authentic taste and artistry of espresso. They have a minimal menu and source high-quality beans from various places. (The beans change every few weeks. They explained that this is even one of the cool perks, as the flavor of the beans change depending on the current source--if you love one, you can buy the beans in-store, and if you don't love one, no stress because it will always change again! I thought this was a unique concept.) There are no flavorings or extras (so this is not the place if you need a ton of sweetness in your coffee). They also do not have any food/pastries. But please do not let this deter you! They have a house-made cold brew and two milk options. One dairy option and one house-made plant-based option, which at the time was made from cashews, dates, coconut, and almonds. (It was delicious.) My favorite was the cortado and the small batch of Kombucha. Another cool part of Deke's was their open-air, standing bar concept. There is not a lot of seating, but standing at the bar was super enjoyable and encouraged connection with the baristas/other customers. The staff was SO kind, and they are also dog-friendly! Two years ago at Dekes Coffee in Delray, they were expanding into the space next door. There was a new door, still closed off. I leaned a little to peek through, just curious. Deke saw me and said, very serious, "Don't look in there." Then he told me I had to leave. My friend could stay, but I had to go. We both thought it was a joke. We waited for the punchline, for him to smile or laugh. It never came. A year later, I went back. I was about to order when Deke brought up the door again. His whole tone shifted -- quiet, sharp, serious. I made a light joke about Dexter, just to break the tension, and he didn't take it well. His face changed. I got uncomfortable and walked out. Now it's open. The renovation's finished. It's just a room. Tables, chairs, a few people sitting quietly, nothing unusual. For two years I wondered what was in there. Now I know. $9 for a toddler-sized cup of cold brew? I should've read the reviews first, because apparently this place is known for its espresso, not the cold brew. I don't know if the coffee was bad or if it was the homemade almond milk that ruined it. I do think it was the milk, as the drink was weirdly sour and gross. Maybe it's better without it, or maybe cold brew just isn't their thing. I will say, I love coffee. I drink it black, I drink it strong, I'm not someone who needs syrups or sugar to enjoy a cup. So when I say this cold brew was rough, I really mean it. To be fair, the ambiance is adorable and the staff was lovely, but I walked out genuinely shocked at the size and price of my kiddy cup. I paid almost ten bucks for a drink I couldn't finish and had to squint to see. Best iced latte I had in Delray Beach. It's a small cafe, but one that really knows coffee. Roasting their own beans, Deke's menu is small. They also don't have syrups or any sweetener so the quality of the coffee can really shine through. Instead, it is a very small standing-room-only coffee shop with a very limited menu of coffees and only croissants. Italian-style, and that's perfectly okay. No syrups here. No whipped cream either. My order this morning was a cortado and it took a few minutes to be prepared. By that time, I'd found a spot at the counter to stand. My coffee was perfect. Absolutely five stars perfect. Delicious, hot, and prepared exactly how a cortado should be - steamed (not foamed) milk with an equal amount of espresso. Deke's in Delray is a specialty coffee shop in the heart of Delray across from The Colony Hotel on Federal Highway (heading south). It's a small place with a few outdoor tables. To say that Deke's takes coffee seriously is an understatement :). I purchased a 12 oz. bag of Ethiopian beans which I ground this morning and am enjoying as I write this posting. The coffee is medium-bold strength and, as is written on the paper bag package, is chocolatey and fruity with blueberry notes. A few things to mention: at Deke's, coffee is offered in its purest form. They don't have sugar or cream to add to your coffee. Instead, they offer dates for sweetness. There was no decaf offering, which for me is important as I avoid caffeine after noontime. Also, they unintentionally double charged me and they don't have a phone number (I couldn't find one online), so I will have to go back to get a refund. I also wish they had longer hours (they close at 12 on weekdays and at 2 on weekends) because I'm not often available to go before those times. That said, Deke's is in Delray in the process of expanding, which I look forward to. read more

We stopped in Deke's for a morning pick me up. The small shop was crowded on a Saturday morning, but we had no problem maneuvering to the tablet to order. There is no table seating inside, and only two tables outside, so plan on taking your caffeine to go. As other reviews have stated, the only alt milk option is their house made almond blend. This is a bummer for oat lovers like me, but the almond flavor in the blend wasn't overpowering. There are also no syrups or other sweeteners. So if you're looking for an iced caramel soy latte, this is NOT the place. But if you're looking for locally roasted beans, and good, simple, coffee beverages, Deke's is the place to stop. It's a whole vibe; you order your coffee sip it outside and pay when you are done just Incase you are ready to enjoy another delicious cup of caffeine It's a small business that locally sources their beans and they have a cool set up in the back that was really interesting to me. You can tell these baristas are passionate about what they are doing and it's so so nice to get to experience the passion and effort that go into their craft. I had a hot cappuccino to say in a wonderful ceramic mug with house made cashew date milk and it was so unique and yummy. A little different then my typical oatmilk order but it was so good to step out of my comfort zone and try my cappuccino this way. Hot Latte with non-dairy milk. Cortado with whole milk - told cashier we wanted an americano with whole milk but he said he would like the cortado. Latte tasted really nasty. The aroma alone was unpleasant. The foam at first has no flavor and then a strong fish type finish. I took three sips before fearing it would make me ill. I have powered through bad lattes before but this was inedible. Also arrived warm so there was no heat to the beverage. My boyfriend was speechless when the recommended drink arrived in basically a dixie cup. I am not impressed with the recommendation based on telling the cashier he would like an americano with a splash of milk. This was like a a tiny cappuccino for a miniature world. No I have never ordered a cortado before but the cashier should have simply answered that it was 2 oz of espresso and 2 oz of steamed milk and I would have declined. Plus there is no way the cup he was handed was 4 oz. The milk also was so sour and off putting. Is it possible the espresso machine/steamer needs to be serviced because of the sour rotten flavor? I am baffled based on these great reviews. I love coffee. I try every place I can when I travel. I have been to Columbian Coffee House, The Seed, Beach Market Cafe at Opal Grand, Maison Bouchard Fine Pastries (the best) and Deke's was seriously disappointing. However, I will never forget the look on my boyfriends's face after we paid $16 for two small espressos with foamed milk. The look when he walked out with that tiny cup in his hand was priceless. I emailed the owners but feel this is a necessary public service announcement. Please, if you love coffee so much and try this place give a bad review. It's good for owners to hear it. Come to this little coffee shop if you want a unique coffee experience. If you need a place to work or just want to hang out while sipping your caffeine then this is not your place. The coffee is strong and the coffee art is always a nice touch but I have a lot of issues that keep it from 5 stars. If you like your coffee drinks strong with no sweetener then this is absolutely the place for you. First there are only 2 milk options. Whole Cow milk and a plant based milk that they make in house. Their plant based milk is a blend of cashew, almond and coconut. We hate coconut milk but the barrista allowes us to sip it to ensure us it didn't taste like coconut. The plant based milk tasted good but not a $1.75 upcharge good. Sooo the cow milk that is destroying the planet gets no upcharge? Mmm-k. We ordered 2 cappuccinos to try out their house made plant based milk. Here comes the next issue - no traditional sweetners. No sugar, no Stevia. What separates this coffee spot from others is that they offer no traditional sweetners and the way to sweeten your coffee is to eat a date. I was down for it. Here was the third issue with this spot - there's no space to enjoy experience. There are no tables inside and it's already 90 degrees by 10am so the sidewalk tables are your only option. There are umbrellas for the tables but they are little help in the direct sun. Absolutely go if you want a strong coffee and youre bored with conventional coffee experiences. read more

Really good coffee. But there are issues you need to consider: First the good. Their coffee is excellent. The only use single source coffee, mostly from Africa, that they roast in house. However, there are only 2 milk options: whole cow milk and a homemade blend of almonds, cashew and coconut, sweetened with dates. We tasted it before ordering and it was actually quite good, but it was also a $1.75 up charge, which is obnoxious. Second, no sweeteners. None. If you want sweetener than they give you a date to eat while drinking your coffee. It's certainly a novel experience but a date is not sweet enough to chew on and sweeten up really strong coffee. Finally, there are no sitting options. They have the counter inside and 3 or 4 sidewalk tables with umbrellas, but in south Florida, it was almost 90 degrees at 10 am and it was only May. That's too hot to sit outside even with the umbrellas and if you aren't sitting, how do you enjoy your coffee and date experience? Not sure how this place does business 6 months out of the year. Our cappuccinos were very good-hence the 4 stars, but once we finished the dates we had fo pilfer sweeteners from another coffee shop. And the up charge for the milk and the extra shot of espresso (which wasn't needed) were well above the norm. So not your typical coffee shop but if the above sounds like your thing than check it out. read more

Very conflicted about this review. Very good coffee and very nice people running cafe but highest price I have ever paid for a cappuccino in the world. Price with tax $8.01. I found an amazing new cafe/roaster elsewhere in Delray called Cumbres and was much more satisfied with quality of cappuccino and price of approx. $5.25. At Deke's they will also not serve their coffees with sugar and there is none available. I believe that their position is that great coffee should taste great as is and not be diluted and/or masked by any sugar. They may have a point but sometimes I just like a small touch of sugar. I am not a fan of ketchup with my prime, dry aged steak but some people are and I suppose that they should have the option to have it the way they want it! read more

Hard to describe this horrible experience without video, but will try. Guy took 10 minutes pouring a simple order before me. No big deal, but his "partner" who took my $ just sat there watching him fill jugs of coffee instead of helping me out. Still no big deal (I just breathed). I had asked for skim milk; he proceeded with pouring whole milk and diluting it with water. I said never mind, I'll just take whole milk. He then rudely said in a very demeaning/ condescending way: "just for your education, it's the same--it's just changing the % of fat (with water)". Possible some coffee houses do this, but was now pissed and couldn't bit my tongue any more, responding, "just for your education, they don't dilute whole milk to make skim milk; they remove the fat". His response: "well that's not how I MAKE IT!" I grabbed my own lid and took off. Horrible, horrible experience. Won't go back; suggest you avoid as well. Other reviews of Nico and co. are quite high. I suspect they've not seen who he actually is. Have lived in E. Delray 20 years. Have seen 'em come & go. An absolute MUST try! One of the best coffee shops in delray and run by some of the best people. They are very friendly and great people people to be around. Part of the appeal is the awesome coffee and the other is enjoying conversation and talking about coffee. Their knowledge of coffee and roasting is amazing and they're very happy to share. Speaking of roasting, they roast all their coffee in house with beans from all across the world, and they do a very good job at it. One important thing about this shop is it is very simple. They only serve coffee beverages without any sweetener or flavors. They also have regular or house milk(made by them). Their statement here is just to serve very good coffee and that is all you need, the coffee will speak for itself. My favorite beverages are the cappuccino and the iced latte.
