Very Disappointed. Tried to call on an order. Asked to call back in 5 minutes. Instead I called back in 10 minutes, asked to hold on, waited 10 minutes, then had to hang up and call back, once more only to be told that what I wanted is now sold out because of other customers in store. Order taking should be in turn. If you have a customer in front of you in store and I call I should be the next in line, not the person in store. Today I was treated in the single most disrespectful fashion that I have ever as a retail shopper in New York City at Duncan's Fish Market. I have been shopping at Duncan's Fish Market for over 20+ years. Today I stood on a long line outside of the store and wait and waited to enter the store to purchase some fresh fish for my family. I was then told that by someone ahead of me that line was for people who placed cooked orders. I then entered the store to look for some fresh fish and someone behind the counter snapped at me and told me that there were only three people in the store at one time and to get out. I left the store and stood outside waiting for an opportunity to enter. Store employees kept calling people in for their cooked food orders. At one time SIX people were inside the store (two of which were NOT wearing masks). Eventually, someone came outside and began taking cooked food orders. I explained to him that I was next and that I wanted fresh fish. He then told me to wait and began taking orders from everyone else behind me. I asked him when I would be able to go into the store and get my fish. He told me I had to wait. Mind you, they are continuously calling people into the store and taking their orders and allowing the store to be overcrowded and refusing to allow me to enter. I then leave in complete disgust. I waited outside of the store for at least 20 minutes in the sun watching people who came after me get served. After a i left the store I called Duncans, and asked to speak to the manger to complain. I explained myself to him and explained how disrespectfully I was treated: thrown out of the store then watching as others got served who came there after me. He gave me a facile excuse about how he didn't know who was next. I explained to him that I was next and that I deserved to be served. He then said to me "What do you want!?" He never acknowledged what went wrong nor how I was treated. I didn't have an attitude. I didn't mistreat anyone, nor was I abusive in any way. I was patient and wanted to patronize the place I had shopped at for so long. I then told him that I wouldn't spend another dime with this store and hung up the phone. On the road and famished. Had a taste for fish and chips. I was brought here. Mind you, I didn't realize that it's an actual fish market. They sell fresh seafood on one side and prepared food on the next. It wasn't raining but I walked in on their wet floor and walked out. It hurt my sensibilities. The place looked dirty and run down. I love seafood. And even though it's a takeout spot, my stomach couldn't handle the smell of so much fresh seafood, the sight of it in such close proximity to my lunch. All I can think of is if they're (probably killing), cooking AND doing all this cleaning at the side and back, can some type of bacteria get into my food? Yes it can happen at home but I just dont think it's wise to pay a business for it. Is this sort of practice even legal in the US My rating is strictly based on the fact that I don't like the set up. I like the place for its selection of fresh fish but like several places on Myrtle Avenue the persons working in the stores refuse to wear their masks properly. The young man serving had his mask under his chin. When his manager told him to pull it up he did however after 1 minute he pulled it down again. Holy hot dogs batman... I'm first!!! Duncan's is take-out on one side and fresh fish market on the other. The fresh fish selections are usually shrimp, salmon, whiting and some choice of whole fish if desired. The take-out side is primarily fried fish and shrimp with sides like mac-n-cheese, collard greens, rice-n-peas & yams. And desserts are available a couple of times a week. I think this place has so much potential, but it definitely needs a new business model. I wish they'd consider adding healthier options to the menu. The restaurant definitely caters to traditional Black American tastes, but the health movement is on the rise in Black communites and the demographic of Ft Greene/Clinton Hill is changing. You can get baked & grilled fish and collard greens (which are packed with nutrients) but more should be included. read more

I didn't think it was possible to ruin Fish n' Chips but at Duncan's, they were able to find a way. They seemed to lazily skin one side of the fish and leave the other side with the skin, even going as far as leaving the tail completely on. The fish was obviously not cod and it seemed as if they just just threw any old fish into the fryer and called it a day. Meanwhile, one of their employees was trying to sell me a bootleg copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Dragonball: Evolution. By the time I actually got my fish and chips, they looked outright disgusting and I felt marginally sick after eating just one of them and calling it a day. Maybe if you're looking for a place that is greasier and sleazier than White Castle this may be worth visiting but for twice the price you could go to the much more high end Chez Lola and actually eat a decent meal. I guess their bootleg DVDs were cheap at $3 a pop. So maybe if you're somehow reading this without an internet connection and you can't pirate movies, this place would totally be worth a visit, but for the 95% of American's with Internet, just skip it. Very Poor customer service. I called to inquire about fried fish and a young lady answered the phone. She was never identified the restaurant upon answering, I almost thought I called someone's home. She then told me "Of course we have fried shrimp" the sarcastic tone made me second guess was it I fact the restaurant. I had ordered whiting with shrimp, yams and Mac. I got it delivered and I can smell the fish before my niece gave it to me. This is the second time where the fish smells really bad. The smell is so strong that I smelled it the next day in my sister car. They give you these little pieces of whiting which is sad. The Mac wasn't seasoned, but it taste like the fish to me which is nasty. The yams didn't have no sweetness to them just a bunch of cinnamon. It's always a hit or miss with them. The lady at the register took my order she was so friendly and nice, I ordered fried shrimps and a coke and it came out in less than 5 minutes. The shrimp was delightful! We've used Duncan's for years, generally to buy fish & shrimp. Once in a while we buy cooked meals. The main issue is the hours are not consistent. I asked hubby to pick up fish tonight and he called at 7:24 pm (Monday) to say they were closed, doors locked and fish taken out of the ice. I'm confident that the sign reads closing is at 8 pm on Mondays. I will try again later in the week but if there is one thing I cannot stand is a business with inconsistent hours. As a vegan, I was delighted that I could go into the fish market and get some collard greens and black eyed peas that were soulfully flavored, filing and under $6. I was comforted that the takeout was on the opposite side of the shop from the fish and that I was not rubbing shoulders with anyone buying fish. I've been going to Duncan's since I was a child and I have to admit the quality of their seafood has decreased dramatically. I stopped by a few weeks ago to pick up whitings and shrimp when I got home I realized that the fillets were so thin and there was hardly anything to them.
