It seems like they prepare the filling a few "days" in advance, you can see some of the meat discoloration when the workers are preparing to fill the dumplings. Ambience: Cozy little place, with side-by-side seating. It's nice that you can see the workers prepare the dumplings. Some of the equipment feels a bit outdated, the trays that they prepare the dumplings on are old and discolored. Overall the place could benefit from some extra TLC, which makes you wonder about how that care translates to the food. It feels like the place stuck in the past and needs to make over. AMAZING!! I got the veggie dumplings steamed (next time I would try it fried for the crisp) but they were very tasty. You have to get the sauce on the side (chili/wild pepper/garlic) it was pretty much what brought these dumplings home. The sauce is flavor packed, I'm not sure if I would like the dumplings as much without the sauce. The filling had tofu mixed with veggies which I liked, it wasn't just filling with vegetables only. One of my absolute favorite places to eat in NYC! I have been here several times. The food is made to order hot and fresh. I get the pork fried dumplings. I don't think I have ever tried them steamed. They also have a combo where you can try one of each. The place is cozy. Lots of seats and one small bathroom in the back. Your order at the front. Relatively inexpensive (not Chinatown level cheap, but good by EV standards) + with ample seating area inside and outside + quick service, it's a great spot for a rapid lunch. My friend ordered the shrimp dumpling and the pork one. I did sample the shrimp dumpling, which was quite tasty! It is full of corn, as well, in case that's of interest. If you put your phone down and sprint, maybe you can make up for lost time. Seriously, 6/5 stars for this wonderful little slice of dumpling heaven. A healthy number of choices are available: for filling, there are meat options (pork, chicken, shrimp), as well as a veggie offering. Then you can choose to have your dumplings steamed or seared. You really can't go wrong with any combination, especially since everything is SO CHEAP. $10 will take you a long way toward pure dumpling ecstasy at this place. My friends and I tried the pork, chicken, and shrimp dumplings. The chicken were seared, the other two were steamed. All of them were incredible. The consistency is perfectly chewy without being too tough, and the fillings are all very tasty. But what really sets this place apart are its pumpkin dumplings (bottom left in the photo). If you come here, you absolutely have to get at least one order of them. They were so good that my friends left for a couple of hours, then had to come back for a second helping, even though it meant pushing through the pain of being too full from our first round of dumplings. I can't emphasize enough how delicious the pumpkin dumplings are. Not cloying, with the right amount of pumpkin taste and seasoning to give a perfect sweet and salty mixture. Tiny cash only spot (ATM on premises) with freshly made dumplings. They operate primarily a take out operation, however there is a little seating inside as well. If you decide to sit inside they have a few seats at a counter right in front of where they make the dumplings. The dumplings are very high quality, and they have a few different options to choose from (including 4 sweet choices). The orders come in servings of either 6 or 10, and either steamed or pan fried. I got a 10 pan fried dumpling order of their "sampling platter" and it was very filling. The sampling platter contained their pork, chicken, shrimp, and veggie dumplings. The pork dumpling was phenomenal, chicken and shrimp were solid, and veggie was gross. It lacks the splendor of "Dumpling Kingdom" or the personal touch of "Vanessa's Dumplings." #NotAllMen, but also, who is this man... Most of my meal was punctuated by a white guy at the counter scream-splaining his personal life to the Chinese dumpling ladies in confident-but-clearly-non-native Mandarin. It wasn't unpleasant, but it was certainly jarring. I wish there were more varieties of fillings. For a place that specializes, Dumping Man only has two more options than most of the other Chinese takeouts in the city. I won't even dignify the "Shrimp Dumpling" as an option because it's egregiously filled with corn and has an odd flavor/texture. You could feel an aura in the air surrounding these ladies as their experience generated a power level that is over 9000. Proceed with caution on the shrimp options. Sadly, the next time I returned to Dumpling Man, the customer service was severely lacking. They messed up our order and were reluctant to re-make it correctly for us. We ordered shrimp dumplings, seared veggie dumplings, and the surprise veggie dumplings. My friend is vegetarian and they served her the surprise non-veggie dumplings. She didn't realize it at first and as soon as she did (after she had already bitten into one), we told them that they had messed up her order. Unfortunately, they did not know what was on their own menu, as they did not understand her when she told them she had ordered the VEGGIE surprise dumplings. She even tried explaining it to two different workers, who didn't communicate with one another. She ended up having to change her order to accommodate their lack of knowledge of their own menu. Additionally, they asked her to return the messed up order of dumplings, even though she had already ripped it open and started eating it. They wouldn't even start making her new order until she had brought it back to the counter and returned it! This didn't make any sense to me. Were they planning on serving it to the next customer? In that case, I feel bad for that customer and believe their health inspection rating should be downgraded. I am so disappointed and will not be returning. read more
