I've been curious about Dumpling King for quite some time, so one day i decided to make the drive over to check it out and get dumplings. Several people have mentioned Ta Hua restaurants in their reviews, which got my attention as I remember the Post Oak Blvd location of Ta Hua fondly. I still rate the chicken and vegetable dumplings from there as all time favorites. But that restaurant no longer exists. However, what's cool is when you mention Ta Hua to people at Dumpling King, they know exactly what you're talking about. Dumpling King's dumpling section of the menu has numerous interesting choices, but I went with the steamed chicken dumplings. Other reviews have mentioned the vegetable dumplings, so I will likely order those next time. What I like about DK's dumplings is the fact that the outer layer is softer and thinner than what's served as most places these days. The chicken is really flavorful. And the sauces and toppings served on the side - red pepper oil, jalapeño, and minced ginger - pair well with the dumplings. I am more partial to the old Ta Hua ginger sauce, which seemed to have a vinegar and oil base and was just so delicious. But I am happy to see a place offering any ginger at all, as many places are quicker to offer soy sauce instead. Service-wise, Dumpling King is more old school compared to newer restaurants offering dumplings, and the people who work here seem to genuinely value their customers' business. I enjoyed speaking with the person who helped me with my order and look forward to returning soon.

Love this place so much! This place is so good and the server is very nice. The food is very good. My favorite things to get are the sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, and the dumplings.

Just went back tonight because my husband and I were having a craving for something from our old neck of the woods (we live in Jersey Village now). The dumplings (steamed chicken and pork and pan fried pork) hit the spot along with our shrimp in garlic sauce dish and a wonton soup this cold December night. The restaurant is a hole in the wall but cozy and reminds me of my grandma's humble Mexican kitchen if she had been Asian. The food never disappoints and we left stuffed but not so stuffed it hurt. I love that the prices are very reasonable here despite inflation in the last year. For leaving stuffed, we paid $60 including tip, a dish from the chef's special, 30 dumplings, one appetizer and two drinks. I really need to ask the waitress for her name because she's always been so sweet even when I've come in with my daughter to pick up food. She has an accent and has always been the same person to check me out the last several years I've been a patron. The service is quick and food comes out hot that you have to wait a minute to dig in.

Best dumplings in the US!!! And the service is amazing! The sweet ladies at work there have been there forever and they're so friendly and happy every time you walk in.

Service is subpar, with them getting several of our orders wrong and missing one order. Soup and eggrolls were good.. Soup dumpling were not good and was dry inside and the bottom was like mushy...everything was already drained out onto these rags inside the pan. However both the steamed and the pan fried combo dumplings were good. Mapo tofu was not something I'd eat again. Their garlic sauce broccoli and bamboo was really good. Orange beef was really good, but a LOT of sauce. When packing up to go, they wanted to charge 50 cents for an extra bowl container, telling us it was too expensive to give to us. I'm sorry, but you are going to quibble over 50 cents on a $100 ticket? One small bowl of rice for 3 entrees... Like most of the food was good, but you are cheaping out in a way that leaves me not wanting to come back.

Great spot that I've come to for years with my family! You cannot beat these prices and the food is magnificent and true to their flavors. The lo mein is one of the best Chinese renditions with incredible flavor! The steamed pork dumplings are by far the best dumplings in Houston! The beef and broccoli is as flavorful as the picture entails! Truly a gem of a restaurant! Very nice staff! Love coming to eat here! Will be coming back frequently! Cheers

    Plastic material in my soup

I visited here since I needed to buy some time before an event. The menu is pretty simple, they have standard americanized Chinese dishes but a good selection of dumplings, and even noodle soups. Since it was a chilly day, I chose a 6pc pan fried pork dumpling and N3. A noodle soup with chicken and collard greens Everything was pretty tasty and service was good. Parking can be a pain sometimes since the lot in front is too small for the strip center. If you trust your car in the rear lot, it's usually pretty open. My one major complaint was I discovered a piece of plastic fragment, probably from some packaging, in my soup intertwined with the green veggies. So they need to improve their sloppiness and quality control.

Pork lo mein. Total bill $10.27. I order it spicy.

I am addicted to the pork lo mein so I won't comment on any other dish. The dish is packed w/ meat. Last night it looked like regular pork, but somehow had a wonderful sausage like taste. It was way more flavorful than at other places I've tried out of town. The next time my S.O. is in town I'll take him & we'll order 2 dishes. This place is old school Chinese in a restaurant that probably hasn't changed in 20 years. I LOVE the prices which reflect this simplicity.

My assorted dumplings.... i ordered the rice as an extra on the side.

DUMPLINGS!!! WOW! These are legit dumplings, and i ate lunch later in the afternoon, but these were FRESH! I swear they rolled them to order! Cool that they have servings of 6 or 10, and you can mix and match them. I've never had chicken w/cheese so i tried some, and they were tasty! Granted it was slow, but the service was impeccable. The waitress waited on me basically hand and foot! VERY friendly and I felt very appreciated. She thanked me three times for coming in. I will be back!

Best steamed and pan-fried dumplings this side of Asia. Well, just about. We have been coming here for over 25 years, and now that we live nearby, I suspect we will be coming quite often - too often for me to write a new review every time. Anyway, it does not look like much, but the kitchen turns out yummy stuff quite consistently. Our favorites include all the different kinds of dumplings (!), Garlic Eggplant, Mongolian Beef, and green onion pancake. Try it, you'll probably be surprised.

Hot and sour soup and egg roll. Excellent!
    Mike C.

First time here in over 20 years...still exactly the same. The food is still amazing and so affordable. I had the Hot and Sour soup, vegetable egg roll and shrimp and pork steamed dumplings. Damn everything was great! Two ladies working the floor and I mean WORKING! One was literally running around taking such good care of everyone. The Hot and Sour soup was actually Hot and Sour in a very good way like you usually don't get. The egg roll delicious and oh those dumplings...they were awesome just as I remember them being. They give you all the things to make your sauce including chopped ginger and amazing chopped jalapeños. Sorry forgot to get a pic of the dumplings...I just jumped right in. I will be back soon.

5 Stars - Authentic Szechuan that absolutely nails the classics…read more During our short trip to Houston, as a custom, we were determined to find real Szechuan food, and luckily we found Hu's Kitchen. The location is a bit unassuming, and parking is definitely tough (the spaces are very shallow), but the second we walked through the doors and smelled the Szechuan peppercorns, I knew we were in exactly the right place. I generally judge a Szechuan restaurant by their 夫妻肺片 (Fuqi Feipian)--which they cleverly name "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the menu. They completely nailed it. The beef, tripe, and tendon were incredibly cohesive together, yet you could tell each component was prepared and marinated in a slightly different way to perfectly highlight its specific texture. The chili oil was right on the spot. We went through a massive bowl of rice just eating this dish alone. Honestly, if I weren't feeding a family of four, I could have just ordered that and been perfectly happy. While the Fuqi Feipian proves their skill with dry dishes, the 水煮魚片 (Fish in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil) proves their skill with wet ones. It's another must-order. The execution was flawless--we didn't just finish the tender fish chunks, we ate every last piece of cabbage soaked in that incredible chili broth. For my two daughters who can't handle the heat, we ordered the fried rice, garlic pork ribs with onion, and the 紅燒獅子頭 (Giant Meatball with Cabbage). The giant meatball was spectacular. The kids completely devoured it on their own, but I managed to steal a bite, and it instantly brought back childhood memories of exactly how this dish is supposed to taste. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. I loved all of the dishes we tried. Should we ever find ourselves in Houston again, we will absolutely be revisiting this hidden gem.

No complaints here since we were starving from an 8 hour road trip. The Dan Dan Noodles...I had high expectations but sadly this dish fell short. I recommend Hu's Cooking to use a bigger bowl and more sauce because it was difficult to mix the noodles and the sauce wasn't...saucing, unfortunately. I wish there was more flavor in this dish. The Scallion Pancake was super over-fried and oily. See image in my review. The outer parts of the pancake were fried to a crisp and only a small circumference in the center stayed chewy. I know Chinese tends to be oily but this pancake soaked up way too much oil. Half a Peking duck: super great price for so much meat. The difficulty when eating this dish is gnawing the meat off the sharp bones of the duck. Mapo Tofu with white rice: pretty easy staple, no complaints here. Dinner on a Saturday was packed but we got seated quickly and food arrived fast.

And their other menu items are fire as well! We went on a Sunday late evening. We had a 9 pm airport pickup at IAH so it was a perfect opportunity to grab a spectacular dinner and make the 30+ minute drive out to IAH totally worth it. Parking lot wasn't too full so that wasn't an issue. While the neighborhood ain't River Oaks luxury, it ain't too scary either. We kept it simple - ordered a whole duck and Bamboo House Special Noodle with Beef. This place ain't cheap but the food is worth every penny. It was very busy that evening so it's not a well-kept secret but also proves that eventually, Houstonians will figure out where the good food is. The duck was near perfect. They serve the duck with the pancakes (as opposed to the buns like at Arco) which is my preference. The soup that comes with it was also extremely flavorful. And the house special noodles with beef - oh my. I swear it's just one really long noodle so you may be frustrated trying to divvy up the family style bowl, but the labor is worth it. So good... Can't wait for my next airport run so I can sneak in a lunch or dinner at this place. So many other menu items I want to try!

I had previously visited the now closed Bamboo House on Westheimer and I remember being impressed by the food. I had to make an airport run and decided that it would be perfect timing to stop by this location. I highly recommend ordering the duck ahead of time, but we were lucky enough to snag one of the last ducks when we arrived around 7 pm on a Sunday evening. The waitress was super friendly and upbeat and the restaurant is older but well maintained. You can see where the food is being prepared/cooked and you can see ducks being cooked/warmed behind a glass window. The duck was absolutely spectacular with the perfect seasoned and tender meat accompanied by well rendered crispy skin. I love how the pancakes are paper thin and pair well with the scrumptious duck and other toppings. They also provide sugar and plum sauce as additional toppings which I thought was interesting but not my cup of tea. The duck soup was extremely flavorful and full bodied and went well with the duck. The noodles were also amazing with likely hand pulled noodles served with an abundance of tender beef and vegetables with a little Sichuan kick. I was intrigued by a strawberry chicken dish that I saw on the menu and I plan to try it the time. My diagnosis: hands down the best Peking duck in the greater Houston area!
