I will give 1 star only because of the memories I have about this place and great food. The Asian lady managing this place is extremely rude and has no etiquettes to talk to her customers. If you request minor revisions to your dish ( due to dietary issues), then be prepared to be yelled in front other patrons. Went for my lunch hour and received the worst service ever. Waitress was rude and very unprofessional. Instead of ask in a nice way, she was forcing my assistants and I to move to a different table and when we asked why, she took the menus away, said we needed to move "NOW" and walked off with the menus and never returned. I came here with my friend who is from China. She lives nearby and frequents Dumpling King and says that they have some of the best dumplings in town. We got 40 dumplings to share among 3 people, as well as some Chinese broccoli. They had everything that you needed on the table - soy sauce, vinegar, jalapeno, red chili oil, ginger, and sesame oil. We got vegetable, chicken and chive, pork with crab, and pork dumplings. We tried our best to eat everything but ended up with 12 left over to take home. The dumplings were very filling. I took off one star because the majority of the dumplings on the menu were pork based, so I was limited in what I could order (I don't eat pork). The place is a little small and service was slow at times, but I will still go back for more dumplings the next time I am in Houston. read more

I would like to begin expressing this post is my opinion and my opinion along based on the experience we received. During out weekly restaurant scans for interesting places to eat in the galleria area, I found this gem tucked away in the corner of Westheimer and Hillcoft. At first glance you wouldn't even notice the place existed, with the super small parking lot shared among other business you would have to get here early. We came here for the dumplings and didn't get a chance to venture off the rest of their expansive menu. It is hard to imagine a small place can produce so many different dishes. From our 4 top, we pretty much ordered all of the various dumplings either steamed or pan fried. From the variety fillings they were able to serve them in a reasonable amount of time. We also ordered their scallion pancake, dan dan noodles, eggroll, hot & sour soup and wonton soup. My least favorite were the soups as the it was lacking flavor. My rating is based on the following criteria: 1. Food quality (4/5) The food wasn't spectacular but was consistent each time we went there. 2. Service/cleanliness (2/5) The front is very understaffed when they hit their lunch rush. Try to pay in one ticket or you will wait an extra 10/15 min to close out. Not the cleanest restaurant out there, as they just don't have enough people to consistently keep things super clean. 3. Value (1/5) For the money spent on the quality of food, they have a lower than market price point so you get what you paid for. This place was a huge disappointment for me. The dumplings were average at best, especially for the price and especially for a place marketing it as their speciality. Their dumplings were puny and small and tasteless. You only get about 8 dumplings for 6 dollars, which is essentially an appetizer portion, and it comes with absolutely nothing else! You have to pay extra if you want rice with that. Chinese food also has a wide variety of dumplings so I was disappointed to see how simplistic their offerings were for this (pretty much only one type of dumpling on menu). Their dishes are just your average run of the mill Panda Express-type fare except that Panda Express tastes better. I paid around 6 dollars for 8 or so tiny dumplings and was not full at all and had to order one of their sub par dishes. So at the end of the meal I paid 13 dollars including about 2 dollar tip so total of 15 dollars! I should've just gone to Panda! read more

I am no longer a UYE virgin... This was the location where I lost my virginity, my UYE virginity... I was able to accompany 10 others to this wonderful, dumpling filled lunch where I was able to meet my Superman lookalike, the lovely.... I don't know how to spell her name, but it starts with an S and she showed up early.... my friend and hermoso spanish yelper Eren, along with my fellow lover of Latin, Mike who finally added me, funny fantastic Kim, and three others who I met and well.... their names escape me, for that I am eternally sorry...well except for alex who hates Coldplay, so I forgot about him on purpose... Well lets get onto the restaurant! The dumplings are freaking yelping fantastic! Steamed was superb, but the fried was... exquisite! I enjoyed trading my dumplings for other dumplings and I felt like we were in our own little yelp country with our dumplings as currency. Batting cleanup for the UYE lunch bunch, I came here on a Thursday evening. Don't expect a glitzy location - and don't expect anything but a bland institutional look inside. The prettiest things will be you, your companions, and your dumplings - and not necessarily in that order. Service is friendly and speedy. That being said, this place must draw quite a variety of folk during the day and I can easily imagine that the narrow parking lot in front is clogged with traffic. Even at 730 PM, the place was 70% occupied with younger and older couples, multi-generational white and Latin families, two college gals, and a table of loud-talking men. I took Agustin S's review to heart and ordered the C10 (Combination steamed dumplings), which allows you to choose two types for your combo. Six dumplings will run you $4.65, while ten costs $6.55. Coupled with their green onion pancake ($2.75), I split the half-dozen order between steamed shrimp/pork and steamed pork dumplings. The pancake came out first and was pretty tasty. Mixed my own special sauce using the condiments brought forth: vinegar, fresh ginger, jalapenos, and soy sauce. While satisfying, I think I was spoiled with the slightly fluffier and rocking version at Fu Fu Cafe (which also was cheaper). Dumplings took about 15 minutes to appear and were okay. Slightlly on the small side, they were about the size of Susan B. Anthony dollars (remember those?). The shrimp were mainly bits and didn't add much. Fu Fu's golf-ball sized ones win in comparison for value and taste. If you're out in the Galleria or Dunvale area, this is good option for a dumpling fix. For aesthetics and pure value, I'd take the extra drive out to New Chinatown's Fu Fu Cafe. But, I'd gladly swap this place over the (shudder) Panda Express that's opening soon near me. read more

I heart dumplings. Not so much chicken and dumplings (ala Comfort Food restaurants), but Asian dumplings. Steamed. I've been on a casual quest for great ones in this town, and have yet to find any exceptional place. Dumpling King's aren't bad. They're fresh-tasting and inexpensive. I've seen this place many times throughout my life in Houston, but it never occurred to me to go inside. No idea why. DK is clean. There's a large selection of dumplings on the menu. Our waitress didn't dillydally (awesome) and was all about business. It can get very busy during lunch, so if you have a group of ten people, good luck in getting the big table. Luckily my lunch bunch group got there on time and got the gigantic table that was somehow wedged in the front window. Space was a little snug. I arrived harangued due to the early stages of a cold, meetings that had run over schedule, and getting lost in my old neighborhood. I was glad to find a space at the table, although if anyone had shown up after me I think we would have had to hover or else double-up in the chairs. The servings of dumplings are large, for relatively cheap. Ten came to about $7. Thankfully (insert smiley face here) the lunch bunch had ordered an overabundance of dumplings and shared with me. So for any of you "old Houstonians" out there familiar with this area circa 1980-1990 here are MY directions: DK is in that small strip shopping center across from where Sound Warehouse was and adjacent to where Dunkin Donuts and Taco Bell used to be. You know right next to the home of the "new," now closed Erotic Cabaret (or was it Bizarre Bazaar?) In the strip next to Miyako's, on the end where Slick Willie's used to be. Ha, ha. So helpful. Parking could be an issue, so go early or late. After you park, you can get your nails done, smoke a cigar, and get your dumplin' on! I had the scallion pancake, pork dumplings (fried), and vegetable and scallion dumplings (steamed). Y-U-U-U-U-M-M-M-Y. I consider the condiments as necessities with dumplings, so I'll start with them. On the table were containers of chopped ginger, jalapeno pepper sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and a spicy oil. We asked for the red pepper flake oil, as well. As I tried each one and then all of them together on my pancake, I was in heaven. I couldn't wait to slather and smother my dumplings! But, as I tried the crispy, flavorful pork dumplings and soft, supple steamed veggie/scallion dumplings, I realized they didn't need a lot of extras. The condiments became, well, fun. The only thing we've ever eaten here is the dumplings, so this review is somewhat limited. If you like dumplings, you owe it to yourself to try this place, which is a survivor of what used to be Ta Hua on Post Oak (roughly where Kenny & Ziggy's is located now), and hasn't changed anything in their style of service in over 25 years of service. They serve steamed and wok-fried dumplings of all sorts: pork, chicken, vegetable, and probably some others, in two sizes--six or ten. I believe you can mix your choice of fillings within cooking style, too. Dumplings are served with crock jars of minced jalapenos and minced ginger, along with rice vinegar, oil and the ubiquitous soy sauce. You mix the ingredients on your plate to your own taste. (If you wish, the sweet sauce and hot mustard are also available on request.) The dumplings are IMHO the best in town, whether you like them steamed or fried, and I've tried pork, chicken and veggie. My favorite is the fried pork dumplings. This is not a fancy place, but it's not a hole in the wall, either. Biggest problem is limited parking. A word of caution--if you get the dumplings to go, you won't get enough of the jalapeno and ginger, so you need to ask for extra; they charge for it (but it's worth it). read more

Also, it's been here longer than we've been in Houston; I remember coming here in the early 80's, and just wanted some decent Chinese food....and falling in love with the kind service and simple comfort food. The Green Onion Pancake is just ok, I know it's popular and my family members insist on getting every time, no matter what, but I just don't think it's 'all that', but I do love their crispy fried noodes, any flavor, their spicy eggplant dish is amazing, and their beef and flat rice noodles are outta this world. For lunch, I pretty much like anything I've tried off the lunch menu - today I had the Gung Bao Chicken, and it was yummy. The chicken meat wasn't smothered in gunk, and it tasted nice and fresh. The cabbage salad that came with it was very tasty: sweet and sour, and crispy. Another great point: lunch specials range from $4.90 to $6.15, so you can't beat that... and the portions are rather huge. The only reason I don't come here more often is the location. I'm usually driving up and down 59, so detouring down Bellaire is not always an option. But where else can you walk in with $11 and are able to easily feed 2 people and still have a chance of left overs. I really feel a lot of sadness for this place as it's lost its appeal in recent times. We've eaten here hundreds of times, but just don't have the same love we've had for many years. (When you hear "hundreds" most think that is an exaggeration. My wife and I have eaten here since the very early 90's and have gone on a weekly basis for much of that. We've rarely if ever have gone a month without it.) Unfortunately, it seems they haven't been able to come back after the hurricane when their roof took some damage. They were closed for several months and lost all of their previous wait staff as they sought new jobs during the extended closure. This has always been a quirky hole-in-the-wall place, but without a good wait staff to help the owners it is lacking. The previous wait staff helped smooth over any issues and seemed to be a buffer between the older owners and the patrons. On the food side, the dumplings are the best. (Yes, I hear your comeback that it is named Dumpling King after all.) The steamed vegetable ones are my favorite with the pan-fried pork and shrimp as a nice alternative. One tip on the pan-fried dumplings is to ask them to cook both sides or they will sometimes be undercooked. The wonton soup is also very good and a large bowl makes a good meal for one. The green onion pancake is enjoyable, but the traditional Chinese dishes are mostly run of the mill. Two experiences exemplify the new found problems post-hurricane. Recently, four of us went and individually ordered four different things (large soup, dumplings, pork dish, etc.). Despite explaining that we were not sharing, they considered those four dishes four different courses. It took us 90 minutes to eat as one person ate their dish individually. As one finished, they brought the next dish. Even after the first couple of dishes they couldn't adjust. One table near us had three different parties come in, eat, and leave during our one meal. Later, I went with my ten year old daughter. The wait staff had just cleaned a table and put the salt and pepper shakers on the very corner of the table to wipe it. Right after sitting down and before we could move them, the table shook a little bit. The shakers fell and broke. The staff apologized and cleaned it up very graciously. However, the owner added $6 to our bill to pay for the generic shakers that can be bought for less than a dollar at a restaurant supply. The waiter even tried to tell her it was their fault and persuade her to not charge us as did another patron. I asked the lady owner if she recognized us as very longtime customers. She said did but she said she had to buy new ones. I refused and she finally relented but in a less than gracious manner. To make things worse, they are in a center that is simply awful for a restaurant. A cigar shop is next door and you often have to walk through a wall of smoke to get in. Inside the restaurant, you can often smell cigar smoke throughout. I guess the upside is that after eating dumplings you can get get a tattoo, smoke, and get adult lingerie from the other stores without driving elsewhere. Your mileage may vary, but for us the very good dumplings don't overcome the hassle and problems anymore. Here's hoping for a comeback! read more

I really love this small unique joint! If you're driving too fast on Westheimer you will miss it. So GPS it. I was able to get a parking spot right in front of the restaurant during lunch time, but there is still other parking available along the strip and also some parking behind the building. I went in on my lunch break and ordered 10 Shrimp and Pork Dumplings and was super impressed that they were only $7 and some change. I ordered a coke with it and received a can coke and a cup of ice. There are no refills on drinks. The dumplings came out after about 15 minutes and they were super fresh. My waitress came and whipped up a sauce for me with the different sauces that were in the table (ginger, jalapeño, soy sauce, sesame oil) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Altogether my bill came in under $10 bucks and I was able to get out and back to work before my break was over. I will definitely be going back here! read more

If you want dumplings, then this is a treasure. I first discovered this place over 10 years ago, & I truly love coming back when I'm on this part of town. Tonight was no different. I ordered the steamed chicken dumplings and the 10 pieces of assorted dumplings. The dumplings were perfect with the proper amount of stuffing vs noodle. what I love most about this place is that you can make your own dumpling sauce. I started off with the finely chopped jalapeno and added the grated ginger. I pile these ingredients on the side of the plate and then I add the vinegar, soy sauce and oil so that it drizzles through the pile. I didn't take my floor and press the hard ingredients to extract all of the flavor. So much fun! Tonight, I ordered the "shredded" eggplant and vegetables. It was starred, but I did not want it spicy so I asked for the mild version. The succulent eggplants were sliced in about 1 inch strips was quite tasty and not oily. I would recommend this plate. We also ordered the chicken and vegetable which came out as expected, but maybe was a little too salty for my taste. No one else complained though. The atmosphere was quite casual and more of a cafe environment that was quite outdated. Nevertheless, I'm giving this place 5 stars because for the price, these dumplings were fantastic as well as the eggplant dish. Just goes to show that you cannot judge a book by its cover. read more

Usually mom & pop spots lacking ambiance could at least make up for it with their food. I did not get that impression here, unfortunately though. I was taken here for a work lunch the other day, and it was pretty decent, but certainly not the best dumplings I have had in Houston. Now the BEST dumplings I had in Houston were in a place in China Town that I was taken to years and years ago by the best friend anyone could ever ask for, but I cannot remember the name or the address. As for this place, the interior is plain and a bit cramped. But most places like this usually are. We were in a decently large group, and yet the food was served quickly. Now, you see, everything I ate was good, just not the best. The crispy pot stickers were great, but the other food left a slight bit to be desired. The true test for me at least, is if they taste good without the soy sauce/herbs/spicy mix. I mean, everything tasted good WITH it, but if it tastes good without, then it is a keeper. These dumplings tasted just alright without the extras. So all in all, a decent work lunch, but not a gourmet dumpling experience. This place is great. My husband's favorite part about this place is their shredded ginger that you can mix into your soy sauce for the dumplings. They also have minced jalapenos as well that can make you sweat. My parents are friends with the owners so they know the caliber of their quality. They are a Taiwanese establishment and don't use any contaminated ingredients from China such as garlic. With all the news of babies dying from sawdust in baby formula in China, we are very careful about not eating food products from China. Their onion pancake is nice and crispy and my husband likes their vegetarian egg rolls. There are a lot of items that one can eat if they are vegetarian or Muslim. Their soup is great and also has no pork or meat in it. Their tofu tastes almost as good as real pork. We usually order the vegetable dumplings and the pan-fried chicken pot stickers. The crab meat and pork purse dumplings are good too if you are a big meat-eater. And if you are into shrimp, their Beijing toasted shrimp are excellent and mildly spicy. I don't usually eat any entrees and go specifically for dumplings because that is obviously their specialty. You can even buy uncooked dumplings if you would rather bring them home to cook for yourself or for a party. Their alcohol portions I have noticed are very generous. For a glass of wine, they use a plastic wine glass that they pour almost all the way to the brim. It's a little awkward to drink the first few sips, but I have not ever heard anyone complain for getting more wine than expected. This place is excellent for a quick lunch or a casual family dinner. We dine here at least twice a month. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who has an extreme love for dumplings like I do. read more

Can one mess up a steamed dumpling? I hope not. My friend and I took a break from work to try out this dumpling place. It's located in a strip center but was surprisingly clean inside. We started with soup, I got the creamy corn and my friend got the hot and sour. Both were pretty good but maybe a little on the salty side. We stumbled here by accident. Boyfriend and I had just finished shopping st the Galleria when I realized I was in the mood for dumplings. Originally, we were going to go all the way to Bellaire to get some but GoogleMaps said "OH LOOK! THIS ONE IS CLOSER, SAME NAME, DUMPLING KING!". Reviews looked good, let's go! Dumplings - Ordered steamed assorted and pan fried shrimp dumplings. Steamed dumplings were okay but all the fillings tasted the same, no real distinction except between the meat dumplings and the veggies dumplings. Fried dumplings were not fried to perfection as well as DK off of Bellaire. They were fried, and then possibly steamed? Won Ton soup is better than what you get at those chinese buffets but not spectacular where you would go home to mama to rave. I got the Pepper Chicken Dinner Special and it was too salty, but enough food to fill me. Overall, VERY CHEAP, you get decent food. This place is awesome! I don't know why it has a lower rating. Hole in the wall, cheap if you order right. Very authentic. You gotta try the chicken and chive dumpling. Really good. They hand make all their dumplings and steam it so this place is relatively* healthy. Also, their green jalapeño sauce on the side is fresh and tasty with the dumplings. read more

I'll start by saying that I've been coming here pretty regularly for years now and the place has yet to disappoint. I always get the same thing - pan fried chicken dumplings with the wonton soup. Sometimes the food takes a little while - it can get quite busy for lunch - but I forget about it as soon as my food arrives. The best part to me is the fact that they give you soy sauce, vinegar, oil, ginger, and peppers so you can make your own special dumpling sauce. The decor is kind of drab and the air conditioning will sometimes make you freeze but with this food, I can't complain too much. read more
