Aaaaalllllright. This is a difficult review. I'm going to break it up into two sections: the bookstore and the cafe. The bookstore is woefully understocked and almost all used books. I'm 100% fine with used books, but the sections seemed sparse. I went to the travel section (upstairs) hoping to find an Oregon hiking book - I know, I know, too specific, but I didn't know it was a used book store! They didn't have anything. The cooking section also seemed lackluster. Maybe the selection of fiction books is better? I can't comment on the prices because I was on a mission for hiking books and it became apparent to me within just a few minutes at Dudley's that I wasn't going to fulfill it there. Then I got a chai tea latte at the cafe. Man, it was amazing. It was very rich and creamy, almost dessert-like. It also had a pronounced nutty flavor. I am in love. When i am back in Bend, this will be where I stop for a chai. BUT the women behind the counter were downright rude to another customer while I was there. The patron walked in wanting to know if Dudley's served sandwiches - I guess they do, but the selection is very very limited and was only cold wraps today. The woman behind the counter first ignored the patron, pretending not to hear her (I'm certain she heard), and then told the customer, "What we have is in the case" in a very rude tone. She was clearly irritated at having to answer questions. I hate that type of service and it makes me extremely uncomfortable. Bottom line: Great chai - ten million gazillion stars...but I'm capped at five stars. Rude customer service - minus one star. Meh book selection - minus one star. read more

We wandered in during the "off" season (April after spring break) and were pleasantly surprised to find a cozy atmosphere, comfortable seating (armchairs!), and a good mocha. A group of fiddlers had gathered with two guitarists so we ended up sitting outside enjoying the music. We returned the next morning (a pretty good cappuccino) and discovered an inviting upstairs section with more seating and more books. I cannot comment on the book collection, but suspect that, were I a local, this would be one of my favorite places in town. read more

I love Dudley's. The ambience is pleasant and the book selection is really good. If they don't have what I want, they order it for me and it arrives in good time. The coffee drinks are excellent, the scones are perfect. Every time I'm in, I visit with Tom, the owner, about what is new and good. He is an avid reader and he knows what I like. Tom walks the walk. He donates 1% of his income to environmental causes. He is thriving in spite of Amazon and Barnes and Noble because of his personal touch and knowledge of books. read more

This place has a great local feel. I've seen live music in here on Art Walk Fridays, and I think lots of book clubs and community groups use the spaces both upstairs and down. So it certainly gets bonus points for being a community hub! As with any really good used bookshop, there's a fine balance between disorder and charm. I love the occasional random stacks, the messy kids sections, a bit of dust, and the smells of a good used bookstore. It's heartening. The prices are fine, generally 4-8 bucks for most books, with kids books being 1-4 bucks and the occasional art book or collectible peaking 10-12. They have an espresso bar downstairs, with a cool old-school machine. Even house coffee is Americano style, no pre-brewed drip coffee here! The coffee, Allann Brothers, is good quality. They could do with some more food, treats maybe from local bakeries or whatnot, but whatever, it's a bookstore primarily. They have comfy couches for reading, the staffs friendly and helpful (though usually they wont go hunting upstairs for you if they need to watch the counter), and the place has great unique charm read more

I left with half a dozen books, an odd mix of literature, history, sci fi, music writing, including a couple I'd spent months unsuccessfully looking for in other bookstores. Dudley's is a fantastic little shop with funny bits of humor pocketed around the shop, great window decorations, comfortable seating for cafe guests and readers alike, free wi-fi, and friendly staff. The owner has been very helpful in helping me find books I'm interested in and has even given me some free sample books which he thought I might like. The upstairs is spacious with additional seating and more books. It's difficult to drink a coffee at the tables with out being attracted to some book or other nearby. The best of both worlds. New owner Tom has taken a coffee shop/used book store and turned it into a book store/coffee shop. Indy books stores have struggled in Bend and my most recent faves have closed, so glad to see that we have a bookstore in town. The difference now is that the owner is a bookstore owner and enlists the help of local talent to give customers the best of coffee and treats along with a carefully selected book inventory. The shop had already mastered coffee and baked good, so shat I like about this is that the owner knows books and has even gone so far as to get to know me a little and be able to provide recommendations for me when I happen to stop in. I love the handwritten recommendations written by staff about certain books. I'm drawn to them and find a few books here and there. When the owner is in the shop I know that at least one of his recommendations will come home with me. His recommendations do not disappoint. There's a section of best sellers, section for recommended and another for local talent and interests. This is all along with a regularly stocked inventory of noteworthy books by author. Upstairs the magic continues with more books. Plus the inviting ambiance that was created with that last owner endures. That said, the lovely baked goods courtesy of the previous owner continue to delight me. The english style goodies are to die for. I see book clubs meeting here, as well as other community based groups. Great environment to great a cup of coffee, or tea and hold your meeting. And it never hurts to look at the books in case one catches your eye as worth reading. read more

The book selection is relatively small, but as others have noted, it is remarkably well curated. In the history and fiction sections, I found a couple of books that I hadn't previously heard about that I just had to buy. Thanks, Dudley's, for sending me home with a heavier suitcase! On top of the excellent book choices, there are lovely cards and small gifts from local artists for sale. The seating space is charming: cozy downstairs, light and airy upstairs. I just wish some of the students "studying" on the second floor were a bit quieter. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Until every other town catches on, go to Bend and stop in for your mid-afternoon coffee fix and grab a sweet snack (GF options available) and get lost in the book shelves as you melt away in the comfort of it all. Kind, friendly staff; warm atmosphere, great food and drink options, plenty of room to wander about while also a great amount of options for seating to stay awhile, from working tables to reading couches. Located downtown, and just a hop, skip or leap to many restaurant/entertainment options, this is the perfect place to kill time while waiting for a night on the town to begin. OK, I was feeling five stars about Dudley's, because of its formerly excellent espresso (as of last week, imho) and because it's welcoming to readers and writers in a way the library actually is NOT. As tends to happen, at the moment I wanted to rant and rave about how great a place it is, a fly in the ointment appeared. While I get a very welcoming vibe from the owner and most employees, a woman who works there tends to give me the sharp elbow with the eyes when I come in, an elbow that says, "We are not too into your kind here." She tends to jump when she sees me like she has just found a burglar going through her refrigerator at 3 am. Once when she did this I was actually taking a peek at a book that had been on a stand, and was right behind her, and she jumped when she saw the empty stand and jiu jitsu-ed around in an impressive half spin, pegging me to the spot with her eyes. She did pinion me in the act of checking out the goods in the store, but I wasn't exactly sneaking it into my bag. I put the book right back. She always lets me know in some way that she is aware I am there. I understand that watchfulness is part of the job, and I do tend to feel sorry for hyper-vigilant people, who maybe grew up sheltered or lacking secure parent figures, but whenever I encounter her I jump like someone has jabbed me with an elbow, and consciously try to keep out of her line of sight, probably only exacerbating her paranoia that I am up to no good. I always buy something, usually just coffee, but I do relax and read as well, and I enjoy that others are doing that too. I try to remain respectful of the space and that there are many people in and out. And the coffee was a massive plus. Today, there was just a different, very medium SOUR taste to the espresso blend. When that happens, I feel assaulted from the inside. It's very unpleasant. I inquired about what the blend was and told it's neither medium nor dark. I asked for more cream to drown out the sour taste (otherwise it would have been undrinkable for me) and was told that I would be charged for a latte next time I added cream to my Americano, because "you are using our cream." I was like, really? I can pour an entire beaker of cream out at Starbucks and no one will bat an eye. Plus, I wasn't trying to UPGRADE my drink. I was trying to make it drinkable. She made me very aware that I ordered an Americano, the cheapest thing on the coffee menu, and that probably she thinks I think I'm getting away with something by doing that. Really, I don't know. If I was that cheap, I can spend a dollar less at Starbucks, and still drown out my coffee with 20 oz of cream, (and I do have to add a fair amount of cream because of the bitterness of their coffee and have never been told I am stealing from Starbucks!) but I really like(d) your espresso, because it made a mild and dark drink that was very sweet and palatable, the kind you could get everywhere when I lived in the Bay Area in the 90s, and which I can't really get anymore anywhere. Including this place now. If you want people to drink Americanos black, then you should probably enunciate that on the menu. You don't even offer just regular coffee, possibly because regular joe's not gentrified enough for Bend. However, that would never be a complaint of mine because I loved your espresso. That's the nub of it. As far as being a person into books and writing, and therefore attracted to various bookstore haunts, not all of us look like Jennifer Anniston; that's a cold hard fact about literary people I'd think book people would understand. Overall I think my experience here is probably an exception, and that most book people would LOVE this place. read more

I feel so bad giving this place a three star review because they're just so dang nice. But from a book lover's perspective, this place is a wreck. The genres are all over the place. There is basically no way to be certain if they do or do not have something you're looking for because there are about a million places in there that it could be. So.... don't bother going here looking for something specific. Just browse and find something totally random and get out before a stack of books falls on you. read more

Dudleys is the quintessential neighborhood book store - it doesn't overwhelm with huge sections of cocktail table photo books on dogs, cats, WWII aircraft, etc., but just the right blend of contemporary fiction/non-fiction, artfully displayed, and with a knowledgeable staff to steer customers to something tasty and new. And the coffee/brews are great. And there is music - live, acoustic, bluegrass, folk - a great venue for local musicians to play their tunes. read more

I was in Bend for the USA National U23 Cycling Championships (my son was competing) and wanted to pick up some vacation reading! I asked about a bookstore and was directed to Dudley's. What a great place! I loved it as soon as I stepped into the room. A really nice woman who I assume owns the bookstore/cafe greeted my daughter and I as she was making smoothies for another customer. BTW, the smoothies are fresh and delicious! The bookstore has a great place to sit and relax (a living room set up with a grand piano also in the room). A person can sit and drink coffee/juice/smoothies as she reads a book. This is a used bookstore, although she may sell new books also. The woman who waited us on was so kind and friendly and is knowledgeable about authors and the books she sells. I really liked this used bookstore and highly recommend it! read more
