I'm so glad we stopped by here. They have such an amazing selection of used and new adult books. Everything is very neatly organized and it's easy to find good books had a great price. The children's section was also wonderful and my kids found so many hidden gems. A lot of hardcover books they found were at a used book price, but looked totally new to me. I thought the selection for adult and kids books and the friendliness of the staff were way better than at the bookstore downtown, so I'm glad we made the walk over. read more

They were having an amazing sale this past weekend! Walked out with 15 books for less than 3 would have cost almost anywhere else. My only small complaint is they don't separate young adult graphic novels from middle reader ones. Not the end of the world, just added that one to my TBR instead of my 10 year olds! read more

Love this place so much! Such a cute spot with so many good finds -- we have gotten many great books and Blu-rays from them and at reasonable prices too. Their First Friday events are super fun. Mom and pop used and new book and media store. One of those places that you never know what you might find, maybe something cool or maybe nothing at all. Book prices seemed a tad high while DVD prices were good. As with any store like this you gotta be willing to put the time in to dig for the good stuff. Wow! I'm floored. Bend now has a cutting-edge independent bookstore! The new owners of this bookstore bought this in February 2017 and have invested a tremendous amount of capital and effort in bringing this into the 21st century, complete with a Square-based checkout. On a purely aesthetic level, it has gorgeous new hipster-grade signage complete with hand-brazed steel joints, beautiful shelves, and an improved open layout. It took a while to sink in, but it slowly dawned on me that they've used their overstock as decor -- in the most-innovative way I have ever seen in my travels in bookstores around the world. When you enter, take a moment to appreciate the upper levels of the decorative shelving wrapping around the rear and right walls of the store. This is a thing to behold. I applaud them for how they make a statement here. Even better, the books are impeccably-organized, in the usual categories (Science Fiction, Mysteries, etc) but with the added grace note of thoughtful, fine-grained sub-categories within some sections. For example, in the section that would usually be called "Home & Garden," they have exquisitely-organized subsections for gardening, design, decor, and so on. Larger sections have alphabetic signs -- a lovely touch. New and used books are interleaved, with used books labelled with a little sticker indicating the date and price. Thoughtful full-face and flat displays show a knowledgeable hand in their curation and highlighting efforts for each genre. On the day that I first visited since their opening, they had a blackboard with an oft-quoted Inigo Montoya line from the Princess Bride. Cute. This has been transformed from a well-stocked-but-musty bookstore into something that feels like a destination store, in the same way that Powell's Books is a destination for Portland shoppers. I've been saddened to see various bookstores spring up and fold in Bend. Big Story flat-out reverses that trend. This new store is something that I'd be proud to show off to my fellow bibliophiles and visitors. This is now the premier independent destination bookstore in Bend. I will be spending much more time here -- and if you love books and want to support independent booksellers, you should, too! read more

Purchased an old cross-country flying book and "Empire" by Gore Vidal. Definitely make a stop here before you head off to Barnes and Noble - you might just be surprised what you find. read more

I adore this book store. I popped in for quick gift and stayed for over an hour, sinking into the children's section of comfy seats and reading book after book before deciding on our present (we ended up buying more than the original gift because there were so many wonderful choices). The store is a place you want to spend time by perusing through the amazing selection and talking with the owners. It is modern and cozy... It is a place that one immediately feels comfortable and can't wait to return for another visit. I love bookstores and Big Story has moved to the very top of my favorite list. read more

Flat out best book store in Bend, I think dudley's would be a close second. Been in the store twice once to get some movies, nice little selection and in good condition. Second time I had some books to sell, got some store credit and found a great Jim Phillips art book ( guy that did skateboard art and rock n roll posters) .
