Can only say great things about this establishment and also the customer service. We traveled from Virginia Beach (and Iowa) just to get Duck Donuts from Duck. We arrived at 1:01, they close at 1:00.. The nicest man (had to be owner or management) who was locking the doors apologized but stated they were closed, we thanked him and started to walk away... He called us back and gave us a free dozen donuts (because register was closed). Needless to say we sat outside and enjoyed the best donuts ever! Stopped by on a Tuesday morning about 8:30 in first week of June. So while the area isnt super busy yet this place was quite active for the hour. They have parking but it fills up quick. So they are located on a little boardwalk right on the sound with a bunch of other shops and its a little confusing so look for the signs hanging from the ceiling. The shop is actually housed in two different buildings. As you walk up from the parking lot on your left side is the shop with merch, coffee and cash registers. You walk in, use the paper order forms and take the paper to the register to order. Then you leave this building and go to the one across the deck where they will prepare your donuts and call your number. They have a few tables scattered about so we were able to get a great view to enjoy our fried dough. They make made to order hot and fresh cake style donuts and cover them in toppings. I like their cinnamon sugar donut. Its delicious. I also really like their chocolate covered and topped with sprinkles. I think what makes these so good is their hot freshness because i generally prefer yeast donuts. Also the squirrels here have no qualms about eating donuts right from your hand so watch out! read more

OMG!!! I just took one bite of the Duck Donut powdered sugar donut - It is warm, soft and delicious. To me, it was reminiscent of an Italian Zeppole from the San Gennaro feast in NYC. This little donut shop has a lot of foot traffic and cranks out made to order donuts. In one store, you place your order at a counter and pay; then across to another store, you can watch the gal make your donuts and pick up your order. The donuts are delicious and the breakfast sandwiches are amazing! Went there two times on our trip and the first time was great, second time, not so much. The girl who was in charge of the breakfast sandwiches was too busy talking to her friends that had come in so she didn't realize she had a sandwiches to make so it ended up taking us over 20 minutes to get two breakfast sandwiches. It was very frustrating especially cause she wasn't bothered at all by the fact that we had been waiting so long while she was visiting. So we went to the original Duck Donuts in the outer banks of NC. It was a cool experience. First, the set up of ordering on one side of the building and getting your order on the other side is efficient. This is especially cool because, due to how busy they were, this could have become a cluster. However, it worked out well. Though Duck is not my absolute favorite donuts, they are tasty. Their customization options and the fact that they are always fresh and warm add to the awesomeness of their product. No matter your preference, you can design a donut for you at Duck. First, you order the amount your heart desires (and id always recommend ordering MORE than you THINK you'll want... They are too delicious). After paying, you walk to the building on the other side to watch your donuts being made and pick them up. A favorite for me here in the Triangle and I was happy to go to the original. Neat layout with a side to order on and a side to pick-up on. Great location right on the boardwalk as well. The donuts are imaginative and they are growing so they are clearly doing something right with the toppings, but the dough itself seems a little cheap to me. I don't know, maybe it's me. I still like the Donut Den in Nashville. That's the winner. read more

REFUGEE CAMP, DUCK, NC Crying children, line-standers desperately trying to shade their iphone screens in the bright sunlight, queues stretching around the building, lattes spilled as a double-wide stroller clears the boardwalk - these were some of the scenes outside the Duck Donuts refugee camp one Thursday at 8am. Why the long lines? Bougie vacationers lured to Duck's famous eponymous donut shop one random summer morning, only to find that ordering, paying for and receiving fresh donuts could turn into a disorienting and dehumanizing one hour ordeal. For our party, ordering was the easy part. Though the line wound around inside of the store, it moved pretty fast and we passed the time reviewing the order sheet, which is certainly a good system for placing and tracking the orders. Our number was 28. Picking up the donuts was the more Job-like travail. The pick-up was across the boardwalk in another part of the shop, behind a counter. This morning the simmering pick-up room was packed with desperate donut patrons waitng for their number to be called, in a scene resembling the cross between a PGA tournament and the Fall of Saigon. We soon discovered that our simple donut order - a random assortment - was about 40 numbers behind those being called. There was no number call-out or display system, so the only way to check on your progress through the levels of donut purgatory was to elbow into the waiting room and listen for the latest number, or plaintively ask one of the donut box-havers breezing out of the shop, what was their number and what was it like outside of District 12. The numbers were called about one-per-minute, so we had quite a wait out in the refugee zone. Which wasn't that bad considering that one could lounge around on the boardwalk enjoying the scenery, count Yankees ball caps, or chat with the other victims. Periodically it would dawn on you that this was all for donuts. Towards the gotterdammerung of our wait my wife muscled her way up to the pick-up counter as was able to watch the teens making the donuts. To our later amusement the teen seemed confused - probably terrified by the swirling mob of emigre nobles just one Thin Counter Line away - about the random sample assortment we'd ordered & wound up just spraying glaze and sprinkles all over all our donuts like a panicked Chuck E. Cheese worker. Not much of an "assortment" unless you consider three colors of sprinkle an assortment (the colors were red, white, and blue). Hey, everyone loves sprinkles! Before age 8. We then smugly and condescendingly fled with our donut box. The warm & fresh donuts were very good - but then the remarkable story would be if they could make warm & fresh donuts that weren't any good. We all - especially the kids - enjoyed that it looked like someone had thrown a sprinkle grenade into our box & slammed the lid. Might be nice to try some of the other exotic flavors sometime - but not if it requires the lines & wait. I'd rather it be something else at the end of the line, like a flu vaccine or boarding the last plane off of Kong Island. Duck Donuts - pretty good but I'd bail if you walk up and it has that refugee camp vibe! read more

In my continuing search for a decent morning cup of joe in the town of Duck, I made a beeline to Duck Donuts after asking a local passer-by for advice. Score!...One cup of organic, dark roast coffee to go. It was just what I wanted, apart from it being a bit thin. Of course I couldn't leave without a donut too! I asked for one cinnamon-sugar donut. "Just one?" the proprietress asked in amazement. (I guess they are used to people buying in bulk.) "Please", I responded. They pulled a warm, fresh donut from the machine output tray, glazed it, and sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar while I watched. Nice! Too bad they put it in a clamshell, styrofoam container when I wasn't looking...WTF? Ever heard of a napkin? A paper bag, perhaps? The warm donut was chewy, unique and excellent. A few hours later I walked by and saw the line was out the door and flowing down the front steps. Yikes! Guess I was lucky to get there so early. I confess I was skeptical. I don't really care for 'cake style' donuts. These however are more like funnel cakes. Soft and warm inside with a few crispy edge bits here and there. My husband and i ordered a half dozen and walked around the corner to enjoy the nice sound view while we feasted. We devoured them in about 6 minutes. Sometimes there is a dissenting opinion. We have purchased and eaten Duck Donuts twice in the past three weeks, once in Kill Devil Hills and once at the store in Duck. They are somewhat different from typical cake donuts. They are definitely served warm and fresh, but that does not seem to be an advantage. We purchased three naked donuts this morning and each ate one while warm. These things are stick-to-your-teeth greasy goo. Neither of us liked the texture. The one that was eaten cold 5 hours later was a little better, still not great and still sticks to your teeth, just not as bad. If you get them warm and dipped in any of the icings, just being within 100 yards could induce diabetes. The icing is crazily overdone making them so sweet as to be sickening. Again, they are a little better eaten cold. I know these things are popular. We found them gooey, exceedingly sweet (if iced) and very greasy. To be honest, more standard cake donuts at a place like Dunkin' Donuts do not suffer the same issues, at least not to this extent. In the Midwest, I occasionally will buy a donut at Casey's General store and they are considerably better. I know donuts are not health food. Nothing I eat is, but these things are off the chart in every way possible and not in a good way. Sorry, someone had to say it. read more

If anyone has ever been to Ocean City, MD I must always stop to try the many assortments at The Fractured Prune donut shop - also an extremely popular fresh donut place at the beach. There something great about donuts and being on a beach vaca, I'm not sure what it is. Anyway, I had a great experience here. Duck Donuts is a well oiled machine. You submit your order on one side of the pier and walk across to the other side to where they are strictly just pumping out orders very quickly. The donuts themselves were hot and melted in your mouth. Great flavors and toppings to choose from. I didn't see the maple bacon when I went there or I would have definitely gotten it for my husband. But I tried all the icings (vanilla, choc, strawberry) and the glazed and they were all spectacular. read more
