My first trip to OBX and I've heard about these donuts. I am so extremely very glad they are a 10 hour drive away. Otherwise, I might do major damage to my arteries by having a ton of their glazed donuts. I was looking forward to the maple bacon donut and chocolate glaze with shredded coconut. I ordered everything I wanted, but went back to the store to order another glaze because IT. IS. THAT. GOOD. How do I know I really like something? My eyes get much wider as I bite into it. Chocolate icing was a little disappointing because it tasted a little 'fake', as if it was out of a bottle. Maybe as a dark chocolate lover I was expecting actual melted chocolate (no need to add extra ingredients)? Anyway, the glazed donut quickly made me forget about the chocolate. The maple icing was good as well, but i think the bacon bits might have actually overwhelmed me (some pieces weren't crispy, but soft and oily). Anyway, in summary, GLAZE all the way. Deliciously ooey gooey cakey donuty goodness. Best part about this entire venture is getting your freshly dipped donuts and eating them while overlooking the sound. Nothing could be finer than freshly fried and dipped donuts on the water's edge! Yummay! Highly recommend the cinnamon sugar, glazed, and maple glazed. Our crew found the strawberry to be a bit on the "mild" side, but nevertheless delicious. Grab up a dozen and head to the deck to enjoy these tasty treats over the water! (One point was removed for the "deer in the headlights" stare we got each time we entered this facility. No, we do not have reindeer horns and did not come in with machine guns, so I am not sure why we got no "hello" - no "let me tell you how this works", no "hurry up and order" - we just got blank stares until we figured out how to order, one person mashed in the keys on the register and the other person dunked the donuts into their flavor baths. I ordered on line 12 donuts a coffee, frappe and a latte. The cost was over $32.00 but I felt it was a good treat. The LATTE came as coffee with pumpkin flavor. I HATE PUMPKIN anything. I wanted a latte. My son who picked this up said the person who made my coffee redid it, THREE times. Imagine - 3 times to remake a latte and I STILL did not get a latte. The donuts were also the wrong flavors. I only ordered one donut for myself. It was a plain with marshmallow drizzle. IT WAS NOT THERE!! The rest of the donuts were overly sweet. I came hoping for this to be amazing and it was just OK, not amazing. Yes, they are actually fresh donuts that you can see being made, but that's table steaks for a donut shop. Nobody should put up with stale donuts. Otherwise, these are just normal donuts somewhere in between super-fluffy and super-cakey covered in your choice of frosting. The lines are long, but move fast. So, the good news is that they have the volume to keep the donuts always fresh and you don't have to wait too too long, but expect a 15+ minute wait to get your donuts. As many people have noted, the donuts are all the same, it's just the frosting and toppings which are different and at some point sufficient sugar overpowers whatever other flavors are in the frosting. There are a few really good combinations with maple bacon being my favorite. The maple bacon isn't even in the same league as the Voodoo Doughnuts original. read more

I like my donuts like I like my sex - hot and sticky. Duck Donuts delivers on this. I suppose that is why eating these donuts was a semi orgasmic experience. Seriously, the combinations of donuts you can create can make one dizzy with decisions. And they are all so damn delicious. I swear we did not buy a dozen of these babies and eat them all in one day like gluttons. Okay, maybe we did. Could. not. stop. eating. On the sad day when we had to leave OBX, after dropping off the keys to our house across the street, we had to get one more for the road, and I opted for a glazed with chopped peanuts and ate it immediately in the car. It was the sexiest donut ever. It was so tender from just being fried seconds before, it was barely holding together as I picked it up, heavy from the warm blanket of sticky sweet glaze, which was still not set and dripping off the donut, making my fingers super sticky but so delicious...hold on, I think i need a minute. Okay. Here is my advice to you: stop reading Yelp and go get donuts. read more

Our first visit to Duck wouldn't be complete without a visit to Duck Donuts. The kids loved coming up with their own custom donut. There were certainly a lot of yummy possibilities. I sampled the warm, fresh glazed. It was unlike any donut I've had, somewhere in between a cake donut and an airy fluffy one. My son thought it reminded him of a funnel cake. Our first trip to the OBX and we went to get Duck Donuts twice. Very good, tasty and rich donuts for a reasonable price. People were getting dozens and dozens of donuts in front of us. We got a half dozen both times and didn't get too crazy on the flavors. We got glazed, maple, strawberry lemonade and cinnamon. They were all good. The glazed had an excessive amount of syrup that we didn't really care for, but the others were great. Next time we go we are going to shoot for the chocolate with coconut and the maple with bacon:) This place is a must for anyone in the OBX area. If you stay at Duck like we did, you can walk to it in 10 minutes. read more

Although they don't taste any different then a regular duck donuts the lines aren't too bad and the people who work here are super friendly. My favorite is the vanilla icing with rainbow sprinkles. They kick any other donut company in the rear. read more

Whenever my brother-in-law really likes something, he will repeatedly punch the air while screaming "that's what's up!" as loud as possible. I never understood how someone could enjoy something so much that they'd react that way. Though, now that I've tried Duck Donuts I kind of understand. The donuts are amazing, the staff is friendly, and the wait time was under five minutes when I was there. That's nothing considering they were pretty busy and are making the donuts to order. Speaking of ordering, you order in one building and pick them up in another across the shopping center. It's not a far walk or anything (like seriously three seconds away) and the buildings are clearly labelled letting you know where to go. If you're in the area you should definitely pick up some Ducks Donuts for breakfast one morning, take a bite, and realize that's what's up. read more

Obviously any place with a 4.5 star average is going to be great. I had high expectations and Duck Donuts delivered. The line may be long but it moves fast. They have donuts (obviously), coffee, and assorted drinks. The donuts are all made to order. You start with a bare donut, add a glaze, add a topping, and add a drizzle in any of their many combinations. You pay and go to a separate area to pickup. It all moves fast and is interesting to watch. We ordered a dozen of assorted kinds and they look like little works of art! I want to eat them all. So far I've only tried one, which is why my photo is missing one, and it was delicious. I'm really looking forward to the maple bacon, the chocolate with salted Carmel drizzle, and the peanut butter hot fudge. How many donuts is acceptable to eat in one sitting? A must visit if you are in Duck. I think they have a few other locations throughout the outer banks as well. read more

I wish there were more stars to give this place but sadly five is the limit. And as I begin to type this my mouth is already watering. I had visited the Outer Banks last year for a destination wedding. It was my first time in the region so I had no clue what to expect. I quickly realized this was no Myrtle Beach. Usually in the earlier part of the afternoon I would cruise down the one and only highway to look around and see what was up in this town. Myself, I am a shopper so I'll go pretty much anywhere that I can spend money. Anyway I kept seeing signs for Duck Donuts. Obviously I knew what they sold, I'm not a moron but I wondered why they needed so many. One morning on my way back through town I stopped for gas and noticed one right by me so I figured what the hell I'm hungry to lets go. After that it's almost a blur. What I mean is I feel like when I walked into the door I truly saw heaven. The smell of warm donuts being made right in front of my eyes. This was no Dunkin' Donuts with their mysteriously appearing donuts. At Duck Donuts they cake donuts are made right in front of your eyes. You know how long they've been sitting out because you watch them pull the donut from the conveyer. On the board is their flavor listing which including maple, strawberry, vanilla and chocolate. I'm sure there were a few more but that is all I needed to see. I purchased a set of three and what is great is they dip them fresh, right in front of you so again you know it's not old. I've never tasted anything better in my life since. I ate all three in my car in one sitting like a true fatty. I went back every morning that I was at the beach and I wish like crazy I had a reason other than donuts to go to the Outer Banks. I'm not sure they're worth a 10 hour drive but if you're in the area you'd be stupid not to go. And if you do go, please pick me up a dozen. Thanks. read more

Awesome donuts, good coffee (cold brew southern pecan - yep!). Was told this was the original? Never would have known. Didn't notice anything special...??? Not sure if I missed something or if there was something cool unique to only this location? If not - then go to whichever one is closest to you unless there's something nostalgic about hitting up this one. I'll give it to ya - these folks have an AMAZING product. We have a location back home - same stuff. No disrespect. Just an observation. We were hyped to go here. Thought there'd be something different. Only thing I can add is that they've shuffled things around by splitting the place in two. Nothing beats the original and delicious of course. BUT why do they close at 1 pm? Every year I think maybe they will have more staff and be open in the evening - these so it's are desserts, not really breakfast. Plus it would space out the customers so it wouldn't be so mobbed. I'm not a huge fan of doughnuts, but I'm a huge fan of GREAT doughnuts! And Duck Donuts has just that. I visited OBX a few weeks ago with some friends and we made the 40 min drive from Manteo where we were staying to Duck, (passing several branches), just so we could go to the original. For as famous as it seems to be, it was fairly unassuming from outside. The parking lot is small, and you go to the shop on your left to order the doughnuts. I love that you can customize your doughnuts in so many combinations to get exactly what you want. You pick the coating, topping, and drizzle you want, and they give you these great order sheets that make it easy. I didn't do that math, but there are probably literally thousands of unique combinations you could make :-). You can be as creative or non-creative as you want. There is such a thing as "paradox of choice" though, and too many options can be overwhelming; so I also love that in addition to the customizations, they also had PLENTY of pre-defined delicious-looking suggestions. Honestly, ordering itself was a fun experience. Then we went out and to the part of the store on the right to watch our doughnuts get made and pick them up. That was also pretty fun. We got a dozen and loved every flavour we made. And of course we ate the first ones hot! The shops also connect to this main boardwalk that goes along the sound in Duck, where we went for a nice post-donut, bird-watching walk =). read more

My favorite combination is lemon glaze with coconut sprinkles and raspberry drizzle. My boyfriend has a soft spot for chocolate and got the chocolate glaze with raspberry drizzle. MMMMMAZING! The dough doesn't even hit the fryer until your order is placed, so you know they're fresh! There are so many delicious flavors, but my personal favorite is their peanut butter glaze. My family has been to OBX multiple times, and this is an almost daily treat while there.
