We went over to duck donuts around 11a on a Sunday, and it was completely empty. The staff was friendly and welcomed us in and told us how to order to creat our own or pick one of the many creations. My husband and I decided on a half dozen various donuts including: glazed, blueberry sugar, pb supreme, Oreo, boardwalk and French toast. I personally, was not overly impressed. The donuts were good if not a little overly sweet, but that could be the flavors I chose. If you're looking for a fluffy donut -- these aren't for you. They're dense and cake like. Seems like it's really gone downhill the past couple of years. Twice stopped by to be told the donut machine was broken. This time the espresso machine was broken. Most recent visit we ordered, waited 10 minutes and then were told the topping on 2 of our donuts wasn't available. We also ordered a milkshake and they apparently forgot about because they handed us our revised order and seemed surprised when we stood there waiting for the milkshake. Took another 10 minutes to get the shake, even though the person who took our order was the one who made the milkshake. Shake was good but definitely not worth $8.50-go to Cuppi Coffee 5 minutes away and get a bigger and better one for 6 bucks. The cashier was pleasant enough but not engaged, even though they weren't particularly busy. We used to come here often but not sure we'll be coming back soon. Update: 25 June 2023. This place has certainly fallen into unfortunate disrepair and upkeep. Though the staff were helpful, absolutely ZERO effort on cleanliness, burnt out lights, no toilet paper nor paper towels in either restroom, floors and tables had food all over them, unsanitized, trim pieces on counter where falling down, torn etc. this store has fallen from good representation. Absolutely love the donuts I get here every time. They are always so warm and made to perfection. This would be a five star review, however, the employees seemed more interested in their own conversation rather than serving customers. They make all the donuts fresh, to your liking, strewn with all sorts of toppings, shavings, a glaze or Oreo, syrup, peanuts, chocolate, sprinkles or raspberry, lemon etc. frosting. It's a chooser's taking home. Watching the Duck Donuts being made is almost more fun than picking them up and eating them! They have small metal mechanical gadgets that roll them and rattle them around on conveyors.. The kids who work at these places have a great time, great POSITIVE attitude and it always rubs off on patrons stopping in. Make sure you've got a mask, as you don't want to breathe on other folk's donuts. Duck Donuts does not wrap the donuts in any sort of wax paper - which I detest - so the toppers do not stick to paper or end up smudged. They are just placed in a box and kept flat. I usually love duck donuts, but I haven't been in a while. On this visit, when we walked in, there were no other customers. No one greeted us. We started flipping thru the donut book until someone finally came to the register. I placed my order, which included a frozen strawberry lemonade, and left a tip...fine. The server calls out that they didn't have any strawberries, so I said ok then just make it a plain frozen lemonade. Then she comes back with a lemonade on ice. I said it's supposed to be frozen. She said it was. I said no, this is on ice, and she said again It's frozen. I then said well I don't want it. Her co-worker then looked at it and told her it's not and that it needed to be blended. So it seems like some training is needed or was missed. Then we got the donuts. They were not pretty. Some were glazed nicely while others looked clumpy or half glazed. I brought it to the guys attention, and at first, he's like that how it is before offering to remake.. My family and I love Duck Donuts. We bring friends and family here each time they come to visit. Their donuts are freshly and constantly made not sitting on a shelf all day waiting for someone to purchase them. You never have to worry about them being out of your favorite donut since they are made when you order them. The employees are kind and patient. Vicki is a stand out for her courteousness. I hate to post negative reviews but I am so disappointed in the Duck Donuts Truck, we had an appreciation day at my job, as a treat we ordered the DD truck. The donuts were dry, not made to order, tasted like day old, the hot chocolate was not sweet, tasted like decaf coffee with no sugar. I have been to the brick and morter store and have had great doughnuts. My office was not happy, felt like we got jipped, spent the money and got sub par, old, dry doughnuts. I will never recommend the truck to anyone, DD people if you are reading your reviews, I suggest you make vast improvements on your food truck service. It was horrible. read more

I'm not a big fan of their product. There was a slight oily taste in the donuts, the strawberry frosting tasted nothing like strawberry. I prefer lighter, more yeasty donuts than cakey, and this place serves them cakey. The line is out the door (probably from being so new), you get in and out in no less than 25 minutes, and the price is on the expensive side. The staff is nice though. Memorial Day weekend 830 am. 3 young kids working, first I will say they were working their tails off. However the line was at least 7 orders deep and at least 5 orders waiting. NO ONE ringing orders because the young lady was having to go cook breakfast sandwiches, and prep other items like the bacon and make cups of coffee, while the other 2 were trying to do the donuts. Seriously how do you only plan 3 ppl for a key breakfast period. Also its holiday weekend which means family comes in from out of town....why not go get donut for every one. The people in line were incredibly patience as the young woman who was supposed to be dining orders had to basically shut down ringing up people. Who ever did staffing earned only a half star. My moms family comes from Massachusetts so we've always been a Dunkin donuts family. I also like Krispy Kreme but that's beside the point. I had always heard great things about Duck Donuts. I've only been to the outer banks once and we didn't make it, so when they opened some in Virginia I was really excited. When I got there I saw that no matter what kind of icing and topping combo you got all donuts were the same price. That led me to be adventurous and get a maple bacon donut. It was so rich and filling I couldn't even start the chocolate coconut I also got. My boyfriends lemon and strawberry iced were also delicious, but in a more traditional way. Have been in again a few times. They really seem to have worked out a lot of the kinks. They don't have all of their "daily special donuts" listed anymore, so it narrows down the choices, which is better. You can still order whatever you'd like, though, so that's great! The employees on duty the other night were super kind and talkative. One of the girls making the donuts even offered to make her favorite donut for my kids, since we were taking about flavor combinations. It was very kind of her, but we didn't need it, so we said we'd order it next time to try. Only real complaint is that the donuts can taste a little oily at times.
