Not easy to park around here. Only street parking and no lot. Lots of tourist traffic. Service was good but could be better. I didn't get a refill of water until I was leaving and it was not cold. We ordered the deep fried pacific oysters and the deep fried jumbo prawns. Both were good and can with 5 pieces. Oysters and prawns were fresh tasting. Good quality. We also tried the artichoke soup. Tasted like green pea soup to me so I'm glad I tried it but I don't think I'd order it again at $18.25 a bowl (big bowl). The place is entertaining with a lot of history. We sat close to the bathrooms so that was also entertaining watching people get confused by this door in the middle. I included pics so you can figure it out yourself. LOL
My husband and I were taking a coastal drive from San Francisco and became hungry and went to Pescadero and ate at Duarte's Tavern. We were seated in a cubby hole that was romantic and we were in the bar and our waiter was fun and accommodating. We ordered the Green Chile soup and thought about the Artichoke soup and decided it would be too much to eat, so we said we didn't want it and our waiter agreed. The Green Chile soup was creamy and delicious! The Calamari sandwich, fixed in an Italian way, was tasty and the bread and butter was fresh and so good!!!! We ordered the Ollieberry pie with vanilla ice cream was scrumptious!!!! Our drinks were delicious! We loved the ambiance and the music! We loved going there. We will be back!!!!
I have been to Duarte's before and just had the Artichoke soup and it is good, but I felt like it was a bit bland. I was told by a friend that the half and half, Artichoke soup and Green Chile soup combo is better, so I figured since I was in the area, why not. The restaurant has a parking lot and there is also parking in the street. I went around 2 pm on a Friday and it was pretty cold out, so it wasn't too busy downtown. When I went previously we were there on a weekend and it was packed, so plan accordingly. The restaurant is older and the furnishings are older as well, but it has a rustic feel to it. The restaurant is also very clean. The gentleman that greeted me was very nice and helped me right away. I ordered a half and half to go, which he said came with bread and he asked if I wanted butter and utensils. The order came out within 5 minutes. They give you a good amount of sourdough bread and they are generous with the butter. The bread is also warm when they give it to you. In the parking lot there are some tables but I took everything to the beach, so my dog could get out of the car. I will agree with my friend that the half and half is where it is at. It has a lot more flavor. The soup was nice and creamy and hit the spot on a cold day. My only gripe would be that it's a pretty small container of soup for what they charge. They do fill it all the way to the top though. And thankfully they are generous with the bread, so the two combined make a decent meal. The sourdough was so good too. It had the perfect crunchy outer crust and a soft pillowy interior. It was a perfect late lunch on the beach. I took a slice of their Olallieberry pie home too, so we could do a taste test between their pie and the one from Arcangeli's. Duarte's pie, for me, was hands down the winner. It has a fairly thick, flaky crust, which I prefer on pies. But the interior was really where it set it apart from the other pie. It had a good amount of filling like the other pie. It was a smaller slice but still a good size and the filling wasn't as runny as Arcangeli's. Duarte's filling is a perfect combo of tart and sweet. It's really balanced well. I found myself eating way too much of it, way too fast. It was really good. It also paired well with the Meiomi Pinot we had. I definitely will go back again for more soup and pie. It's worth the stop to have some local fare and enjoy the nostalgia.
Duarte's Tavern has been opened since the 1890's so we came to check it out on Fathers' Day. We got there just when they opened and after a brief wait, we were seated. The server told us about the specials and gave us time to review the menu. We went for the crab cioppino, hamburger, fish sandwich, fish&chips, seafood chowder and artichoke/green chile soup. The artichoke/green chile soup was the standout as expected, and our kids gobbled it up even though they usually don't like vegetable soups. The ciopinno and burger were good not great. The fish sandwich and fish&chips were mediocre. Our meal overall was not that memorable. The desserts,however, were the bomb. The ollalieberry pie à la mode was fresh and tarty, the apricot cobbler was awesome and warm, the ollalieberry soft serves were amazing. Having heard so much about the historic Duarte's, we are glad we have experienced it. However, for the quality of the food the prices were really high, and the only items worth the price in my opinion were the desserts.
Party of 2 for Saturday lunch. My hubby and I drove out to try something new and we were not disappointed. Greeted nice and warmly and sat quickly in a cute tucked away spot for 2. Kate was our server and she was a peach. So helpful, polite and kind. Will ask for her every time. I enjoyed an OLALLIEBERRY BRAMBLE cocktail and it was Devine. The Artichoke Soup is amazing, so get it. The warm sourdough is fantastic as well. My blue cheese and bacon burger was delicious. I did not care for the OLALLIEBERRY pie but others seem to love it. I will try something else next time. We will be back as there are more selections we would like to try. Facilities are clean and well kept as well.
My first time at Duarts with a friend who treated me out for my birthday lunch I got the artichoke soup which was very delicious.My meal also came with sourdough bread very delicious And got the cheeseburger with fries and a diet coke which was very delicious Then I got to try the home made olalillberry pie which awesome and very delicious. Service was awesome.I recommend this place
We had the artichoke soup very tasty wish it had junks of hearts in it but that's just me , the place is very rustic lots of character, the service was very good our server knew her stuff also had dessert the ollieberry pie was excellent We will be back.
had a little getaway in Pescadero for the weekend, and came across this lil spot. and holy crap I'm going to be thinking about this pasta for a while. first of all, the clam size?? and 1 container of just MORE clams?? unheard of. it had pieces of thin sliced linguica, leeks, and an incredible white wine sauce. gosh I wish I took another order back home to SF with me. I heard the pies were delicious. olallieberry was like a blackberry vibe. they were gone before I could ask for a bite. I'll be back eventually! such a cute spot too :)
We visit Pescadero every now and then. It's a fun place with cool people, good bread, and goat dairies that are fun for families. Recently we gave Duarte's tavern a try. Overall we liked it and I would come back. The place has been around for over 100 years, and some of that character shows in the walls and fixtures, which have a Wild West feel. Staff was friendly and service was reasonably quick. Most of the food was good, not Michelin star by any means--the calamari sandwich was served on white wonder bread or something similar, and I don't think it was toasted. Satisfying if you're hungry. The mussels in garlic cider sauce were pretty good. The negative reviews seem to be for the price of the food. It was definitely expensive for what it was, but it's a remote area with few options, and it's probably expensive to source. Idk, maybe it's fair to expect more in terms of food quality for $25 per plate. We liked the olallieberry ice cream the most--unique flavor and pretty good portion size, enough for the two of us and our toddler to split.
Not many vegetarian dishes. Hubby got cioppino that looks awesome and the taste confirmed it! Initial service was slow, we needed to call the waiter a couple times to take our order, but once it's done it flows nicely. It's a good place to hang out in HMB, next to several art studios, away from the more popular Main Street. I was looking forward to have the fried artichoke but apparently either it's not in season or they replaced it with chilled artichoke, whatever it is I didn't order it. I heard another guest also wanted the fried artichoke and didn't want the chilled one. Duarte is always a great alternative if you are looking for a laid back old country style dining experience
The food was wonderful! Nina, our server was very attentive We tried the artichoke soup, and the soup of the day was a seafood rice. Loved both of those soups! The lemonade was refreshing and very different. Pie was different. Very tart
Stopped here for Olallieberry Pie! It came out warm and we had it with a side of ice cream. You should try it - Olallieberry is from the area, and the whole restaurant sources locally. Our server was really kind and shared the Duarte cookbook- it's so rich in history and I enjoyed flipping through and reading more about the tavern. Stop by next time you visit pescadero!
I like the food we got here yesterday! Came for the nostalgia and left feeling satisfied. The famous soup was not as good as I remembered it to be, when I got it as a kid but still decent. We loved the fried jumbo prawns & chioppino. I would say it was like i remembered for sure. Good seafood old school place on the coast! Service was good & the ambiance was basic, wooden and sweet 1890s vibe. To me it seems like a casual place with good coastal eats. read more

Best French dip I've ever had. Deluxe with grilled onions and jalapeños with melted cheese (jack, perhaps). Crispy fires (I prefer regular fries simply fried and salted, not too crispy, but these were good). Very friendly server who steered me towards the dip. read more

Food was good, definitely do the half and half for the soup. Don't think I would of liked it if it was just only the artichoke soup. Fish was good. Service was good. My boyfriend liked the veggies, I felt like they needed more seasoning. However, I personally don't think I'd return or do the drive just to eat here place. (That's what I did because it was so highly recommended). If in town than yes check it out. read more

Let me start off with service was fine and acceptable. 1. The water tasted strange. Likely well water which my hetch hetchy taste buds immediately hated. Which is why I opted to get a coke. Except the coke is made with that same strange tasting water. I couldn't drink the coke. 2. The $16 tiny bowl of cream of green chile soup. Just flavorless. Nothing special, but the only vegetarian soup option. 3. The $10 grilled cheese. It was fine. Shouldn't be $10. 4. The strawberry cobbler, which was more of a deconstructed shortcake, was actually quite good. 5. The bread and butter served was also good 6. Parents got the hamburger and the seafood soup of the day. Dad said his burger tasted odd. "Like it wasn't beef" mom actually liked her seafood soup. Maybe you're better off getting a deli sando from a grocery store. I will not be returning. read more

This place had been on my must-visit list for a while because I was so curious to see Pescadero. Finally, my husband managed to carve out one day off from his busy schedule, and we took a trip together. After spending hours without food and swimming in the cold, very cold, ocean, we were both exhausted but happy, and I was really excited to see what this tavern had to offer. The first thing I noticed, and didn't like, was that the space wasn't very roomy. There weren't many seats, and we ended up at a small table with tall bar chairs, which honestly weren't very comfortable. I understand it's a small town, but still, it felt a bit cramped. That said, I really liked the atmosphere. It had a charming, old-fashioned, classic feel. I ordered the artichoke soup for the first time in my life because it was one of the most recommended dishes, and I like trying something new and signature to the place. The soup was $18, and while it wasn't bad, it definitely didn't feel like it was worth that price. My husband got a hamburger, which he said was fine, not the best he's had, but enjoyable. He especially liked his Bloody Mary, and I have to agree, it was probably the best Bloody Mary either of us has ever tasted. It was exquisite! Overall, I was leaning toward giving the place 4 out of 5 stars. My husband was ready to rate it a 5, until we realized they had already included a 17% tip, which we hadn't noticed, and he added even more on top of that. We didn't read any reviews beforehand, so that was a frustrating surprise We ended the meal with a slice of their pie, it was delicious. My husband didn't like it, but I enjoyed it. So in the end, we agreed on a 4 out of 5. It was a memorable experience with some highs and a few small letdowns. Anyways, I'm glad we went. read more

We love to make the trek over to Duartes so we can savor their artichoke soup, bread, French dip sandwich, apricot pie, and beer selection. Once we had some delicious Parmesan cheese dusted artichokes but I'm not sure if they sell them regularly or not. Today I ordered the Mexican coleslaw (which was $1.50 to sub for fries) and I absolutely loved how tangy and refreshing it tasted. Due to their STEEP prices, Duartes is a once-in-a-while treat for us. I hate to say it but this is one of those restaurants where you might find yourself feeling like you're a bother, depending on your waiter or waitress. Very subtle but you can tell who they're happy to wait on (or not). We try to be as pleasant an easygoing wherever we go, and we tip well, so not sure what's going on about that. If you're from the Bay Area, you know that Duarte's Tavern is a Bay Area staple. It has a wonderful family own vibe, and great servers to take care of you. Our pro-tip is that we sit at the bar, and order whatever is in season. They have the best fava bean dip, with toasted sourdough chips, and their pies are simply the most delicious. Since it was summer, we got the decadent Boysenberry pie with vanilla ice cream. We left very full and happy! read more
I am truly surprised by the 3.4 rating. This place checks all the boxes. Unique... Check! Duarte's Tavern has been around since 1894! Come on man. How many such spots are still around? The furniture including the bar is from the old days and if you don't know the history, I can see some people saying ... why is this not updated! To me, the age and decor are a great part of the experience. Service... Check! Our waitress was super friendly and helped us with our order including our pie order. She was attentive without being overbearing. Food...Check! The complimentary bread was hot, fresh and tasty. The artichoke soup was great. The veggies are fresh from their own garden. The burger and French Dip with au jus were both excellent and went quickly. The star of the show was the olallieberry pie which they are renowned for. Awards...Check! Duarte's Tavern received the James Beard "America's Classics" award. Celebrity endorsement...Check! Guy Fieri's favorite spot in California What else does a restaurant have to do to get a higher rating around here?? read more
It had been well over a decade since the last time Jamie W and I had been back to Duarte's. When we decided to have a Costanoa weekender, I thought I could finally try their fabled artichoke soup since we had breakfast the last time. In my ancient Yelp review, I characterized the food as "Fine. Just fine." This time, we were here for lunch, and we sat in the more atmospheric pub area. Lunch was way better than what I remember of their breakfast plates. Their soups were awesome. Jamie had the $16 Soup of the Day, which was a light minestrone with huge chunks of fresh crabmeat mixed with chopped tomato, carrot, and onion (photo: https://yelp.to/wqnBRKccAP). The mains were solid choices albeit not in quite the same flavor league as the soups. Jamie was completely satisfied by the $28 Snapper & Chips. We were in the neighborhood and had to try their famous olallieberry pie. They were tables in front but they took my friend and I to the bar, which worked out fine since we looked at the menu of food and nothing really called out except for the pie. It came out fairly quickly and the pie crust had a nice chew on it and filled with tons of olallieberries. Paired with the vanilla ice cream, it was such a nice treat. The pie wasn't too sweet which we really liked, felt almost healthy! read more

I've always wanted to come here as I know it's a staple along the coast. It has that really cute tavern feel. I love that the restaurant is attached to the bar. It's just so cozy. Parking was also very easy as there is a lot and street parking. Our server was so sweet and attentive. We were in a hurry as we were going from one job to another but wanted to stop for a quick bite. She made sure she got our order quickly and brought everything out quickly as well! The food was ok. It's really overpriced for what you get. I got the calamari steak sandwich with the Cajun seasoning. It's good seasoning but I should have asked for light on it as that's all I tasted. The sandwich was bread, seasoning, calamari steak, and lettuce. It came with fries and cost $24. It was good but not $24 good. I also think it's wild that an 8 oz soup with bread is $18.25. My friend got the mix (artichoke and green chile). It was decent and great when the bread was dipped in, but again, I wouldn't get it for that price. The pie however...heaven! I would go just for the pie. The crust, the filling, it was all perfection! The fries were also very good. Get a side of fries and a piece of pie a La mode. Eat a fry with a bite of pie and ice cream. I know it sounds weird but it's soooo good! Just like dipping a French fry into a milk shake but add some tart berries to it. I'll return for that combo. First time visiting. Service was good but the waitress was not the friendliest...maybe just a bit overworked. We had the artichoke soup which was very good along with the sourdough bread that comes with it. Only issues was $18+ for a regular size bowl of soup is a bit pricey. Also had garlic fries which were really good. Finished up with their olallieberry pie...tart yet sweet with a great crust. My biggest complaint and why only 3 stars...their tables are a mix of regular dining room tables (like at home). They sat us at one with just built in bench seating around a too short of a table. Felt hunched over the whole time. Not to mention the bench had just wall as a back and was very uncomfortable. This made the whole lunch just not fun. read more

Went to visit this historic tavern after a hike to the see the seals and I had a great experience! After learning more about the history of this town through this tavern I was really enlightened and excited to try the local delicacies they had to offer! I ordered the Olallieberry Swirl Soft Serve and the Olallieberry Pie and they were so good. The seeet and tangy flavor of the pie was delicious and the soft serve was the best pairing for the pie! I was traveling through the area and this spot did not disappoint. Dim lighting and spacious interior make for a cozy atmosphere. This place has a full bar with sports TVs. I loved the olallieberry, which was a fun tart and refreshing drink. Portions are generous, and plenty of butter with the complimentary bread. Service was speedy and I couldn't help but be friendly with our server, even after a long drive. I got the artichoke soup, smelt, and mushroom toast. My wife and I agreed the toast was amazing. The soup was also great (artichokes are a local specialty, so definitely try some while in town). The smelt was mostly oily, but luckily there's a wedge of lemon and tartar to with it. read more

Duarte's has outdoor picnic tables set up for to go orders. You can call and ask, but I think dogs at welcome at outdoor tables. This is as of 9/2/2021.
