That deceptive pricing strikes again! I went to get a replacement battery (CR-2016) for one of my watches. In the Duane Reade/Walgreens website, the price is under $5. When the lady rang it up, it was almost $10. I don't mind paying extra for something if I think it's worth it. But, I couldn't go through with this transaction, lol. Not when Amazon's selling the same for a fraction of the price. When I see one price online and am then charged almost 2ce as much in-store, feels bait & switchy. More and more, I've been ordering items that I'd purchase from DR from Amazon. And, yeah, that's where I'll be getting this watch battery. I'm already a Prime member so I won't be paying extra for shipping. Just...saving those bucks that I'd rather keep in my pockets than give to Duane Reade. read more

77 6th Avenue Location. Everyone there is very nice except for one middle aged, female black women (thin and wears a hair net) who quite a piece of work. She is rude to practically everyone. I think she works there on weekends only. I observed her telling someone "you should have asked for a bag at the beginning" because now I have to go back and charge you 5 cents. This, while she sighs loudly. Same thing happened with another customer when I was there a different time. Then another day I spot her arguing with the absolute nicest women who also works there. So, today, when she got to me, I knew she'd come up with something. I asked for the bag first, she then processed the items, and reached for the bag. At that point, I waved my credit card over the machine but didn't realize she didn't actually finalize it . She then says "I didn't finish, sir - I only have two hands, I'm not an octopus". I yelled at her, calm down, nobody's rushing you!. Then she just grumbled. This women has a major chip on her shoulder. I tried to shrug it off as maybe she's having problems at home, but come on. You don't have to go out of your way to be nice, but don't be so freaking rude. Quite the opposite of those "Mr. Lee" Walgreens commercials. read more

I believe this location is 24/7. The service is somewhat attentive despite the long lines at the check-out counter. They don't have a huge selection of brand names for beauty products as well as potato chips. Yes, some items are priced considerably higher than other drug stores as their competitor CVS. read more

Located in Midtown, the prices at this Duane Reade are noticeably marked up higher than those found elsewhere. Still, in terms of convenience, it can't be beat for me for during the workday. This Duane Reade is usually pretty clean and organized especially after they had that major store revamping over the summer. You can grab a sandwich, fresh fruit, yummy snacks and sushi there now (although I wouldn't recommend getting the sushi as it is probably tastes as if it's 30 days old). I've also noticed that they have a whole section of gluten-free food items (cookies, pasta, chips etc.) in the snack aisle so that's very accommodating for anyone with Celiac's. Good for them. On the downstairs level they have a very nice beauty and makeup area with a great selection of products. Also if need be, they have beauty "experts" on hand specifically to answer any of your questions regarding the brands and what you're looking for. I noticed brands like POP Beauty and Pur Minerals which are actually not that bad, especially if you don't want to shell out major bucks or frantically find a Sephora. If you need a drug store and are trapped near 57th and 6th Avenue, this Duane Reade is your best bet. read more

I was at a different Duane Reade down the street which closed earlier. When I went in I was concerned about items I wanted, and also it was slightly raining outside. I was greeted with a great smile by Skyler, who also was greeting other customers just as friendly. I then picked up the items I wanted, but when I went to the register, I told Skyler that those items were on sale at the other store. She then checked the pricing and told me, to put in my Walgreen's membership number and the pricing would be the same. Good place to go. read more

I can't imagine anyone would want to read up a review for Duane Reade, except for Duane Reade's management or marketing execs... so here goes, from a marketing major :) Convenience: 5 stars -- almost like a Starbucks, one on every corner on the Manhattan island. Price: 2 stars -- I understand this is NYC, but some items are priced just a bit more than comparable items in other drugstores. Assortment: 3 stars -- good, I can find just about anything that suddenly comes to my mind in here. However, need to work on the new arrivals!! Sometimes I see this really cool ad on TV, and I want to buy it, and I search in all your chains, but never find it. Plus some of your stuff looks like it's been sitting in the dust for a long time... which brings me to.... Interior/presentation: 1 star -- it looks really old in here, a bit on the dirty side, nothing is fresh and new. Time to upgrade the aisles and the floors and all that! Plus, it always takes me a while before I finally find the aisle I was looking for. Need to work on the presentation! Remember, impulse purchases.... Staff/friendliness: 3 stars -- average, generally pass the test. Club card: 1 star -- is it really necessary? Can't you just give us all one low price? I normally get my prescriptions filled at CVS over by 34th street. I was surprised at how easy it was to get my drugs at this Duane Reade. Unlike CVS, there was no paperwork to fill out. The lady just took my insurance card and took the information from there. Within 20 minutes I had all three of my prescriptions ready, no hassle. There was even two comfy chairs for me and my companion to sit on while we waited. The time went by fast and despite the other reviews, I never saw more than three people in line. Service was great and I have no complaints. In the front of the store where there is an ATM, there is even a place where you can sit by the window as you wait for whatever/whomever. That's a nice option especially when it is cold outside. No one told us to leave and no one stared at me in horror as I changed the blood filled gauze that was in my mouth. read more

When I had an issue with my insurance company not covering something that I could not be without and could not afford out-of-pocket, he found a (legal) way around it. I cannot thank him enough. I was staying at the Plaza. They ONLY sell Coke. I don't do Coke. I want a Pepsi Max in the morning. So, I scouted out the closest drugstore which in NYC always seems to be a Duane Reade. They were open 24 hours a day. YAY! They sell Pepsi products. YAY! They don't have everything a normal drugstore would have. Boo. I thought all drugstores were created equal. However this is not true in New York. Apparently there are different types of Duane Reade's. So make sure that the location that you are going to will have everything that you need by checking out all the details on the Duane Reade website. Aside from being racially profiled here one time, this particular branch has never let me down. The new lay out makes everything a lot easier to find. Not fan of this new rewards program, but what can you do. This branch is very convenient and can afford to charge what they want because it is right next to the F train. If you are in a rush and need to pick up an item, they have it. This one and the one on 60th & Lex are my most frequently used DR's. I will continue to shop here. For the youth that frequent here, be mindful not to dress like a delinquent. They will tail you through out the store because they have to make sure that their wealthier clientele feel safe in their store. read more

I came to this Duane Reade location to see the doctor on premises. I was pleased to see that there was not a long wait. I was also greeted with friendly and professional demeanor by both the physician's receptionist/assistant, and the doctor. This location (among others) is currently participating in a promotional offer of $95 for the visit cost. As someone without health insurance currently, this was very appealing. The doctor was attentive and responsive when I listed my symptoms. He was very helpful! The visit must have only lasted 5 minutes at most, but it was efficient and direct. The doctor was quick to reach a diagnosis and prescribed an antibiotic to me that was filled at the pharmacy counter right outside the office area. Overall: great, fast, helpful service! read more

Snuck in here on our visit to NYC for a few necessities. Quickly in and out. the layout was very nice, easy to navigate. Upon our checkout, a very angry drunk man started yelling and throwing punches! I'd never experienced anything like that in broad daylight (much less at noon!). I like the cleanliness of this Duane Reade...but they often aren't fully stocked. And, while the cashiers are nice, they're often slow in many ways. So I rarely go into this one if I'm in a time crunch. But at least they mean well and do try to do their best...for the most part. read more

This Duane Reade is leagues above the Duane Reade about 3 blocks to the south on the other side of the street. Although that other Duane Reade is closer, I'll walk the extra few blocks to this one. What are the specific advantages of this Duane Reade? 1) More random European beauty products. In other words, they've got a better selection of Vichy and La Roche-Posay. 2) Passport photos. (But only before 6 pm). 3) A wide selection of Alleve. I discovered this today. I needed Alleve. The other Duane Reade only had the huge bottle. I really didn't feel like spending close to $20 on Alleve. I just wanted the little bottle. The $5.49 bottle. Not the $18 bottle. This Duane Reade had the full range of sizes. And, yes, I in fact did leave the other Duane Reade sans Alleve to come here to see if they had a smaller size. I didn't mind the walk. 4) They haven't overcharged me. (Yet. I realize I have now jinxed myself). I get overcharged fairly frequently at the other one. Which might be more an issue that the other one has a really hard time putting prices on things and removing sale signs. I'm still only giving it 3* because it's a Duane Reade. I suppose in the Duane Readiverse, I'd rate this 4*, since it's better than many of its kind, but in the end, it is a Duane Reade, meaning it always kind of sucks, they don't do cash back (etc. etc). But it's much better than the one down the street. All that being said, there's still no need to deal with getting your prescriptions filled here when the charming folks at the Z Chemist can take care of you much better. Just saying. read more

Used the chip feature and later I noticed Duane Read charged a fraudulent charge for $400 something on the same day right after the acuurate charge I saw for what I purchased... I witnessed two men steal a variety of items by simply placing it in a duffle bag and walking out carelessly. Out of the 1 million* Duane Reade pharmacies in NYC, this is one of the better ones. They usually have one of my harder to find prescriptions in stock (whereas none of the others do), perhaps because they are open 24 hours? Also, they are much faster than some of the other locations, which means I don't have to drop off and come back, but can just wait to get it filled. read more

Absolutely avoid this place at all costs. Horrible customer service at this location. Was inside buying groceries when I desperately needed to charge my phone. Had a man with long dreads who worked at the store come up to me and rudely say "You need to ask specifically me if you can charge your phone. Would it be ok if I just come into your place of work and charge my phone?" and then proceeded to not stop harassing me and yelling at me for using an outlet when I voluntarily took it out. I cannot for the life of me understand any reason someone would act that way or care if a paying customer uses an outlet to charge their phone and not be loitering, or harass their own customers in such a way. He clearly needed to find a way to have a power trip because he works at a convenience store. I could never shop at a business that treats their customers or people in such a way.
