Through time and tide, I grew wearied and utter dismayed from the national corporate standard pharmacies of Walgreens and CVS. I was in search of hair conditioner specifically to moisture dry hair. In the passage and consumption of my wanderlust travels I encountered Thriftway Pharmacy located between 45th Street and 46th Streets intersecting 10th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen, Midtown West. Customer service is "as is" described by previous Yelp reviews! Attentive to customers' needs and take the time to service. Oddly, I have previously purchased hair shampoo but now lacking the hair conditioner. The male associate was kind and compassionate to reach a high shelf to obtain my selected choice brand without judgment. Business cards are available for grabs. No comment for the pharmacy within as I patronize this business specifically for their retail products. Note: This business is easily accessible by A train at 42nd Street/ Port Authority station. At 76 years old, I have dealt with many pharmacies. I have never experienced a pharmacy like Thriftway. Courtesy, responsiveness, and valuing me as a customer are some of what I experience. In the store, on the phone, or when my medication is delivered, each of the workers treats me as if I am someone special. And everything I've written here is not an exaggeration. read more

Thriftway Pharmacy always does a good job with my refills. I keep coming back even though I have moved to Washington Heights. I don't mind traveling to Hell's Kitchen to get my refills because they are always the best. read more

This has to be one of the best pharmacies of all time! I've never had a single problem with my prescriptions unlike with CVS. They also sell some interesting things that you wouldn't find in most other pharmacies and I find that kind of neat. The people are pleasant and have found coupons for some of my prescriptions. I think that's nice. I don't really want to pay $90 when I can pay only $10. Thank you Thriftway for your help. read more

Best pharmacy in NYC! Staff is so helpful and able to resolve issues with prescriptions (especially transfers) efficiently. When you call you get a real person on the phone and not an automated service like most big pharmacies. Can't say enough good things about this place! read more

This is the best Pharmacy in Hells Kitchen and even Manhattan. The pharmacist and owner, Chris, is a great guy and he's always attentive to what you need and how to get it for you. Just updating 10 years on from my first review here ...Chris is still as amazing as he was then! I never bother with the others...I can get everything I need at Thriftway, and if he doesn't have it in he will get it.. sometimes even the next day ! The pharmacist Chris is great; he'll go to bat for you with your insurance company and do as much of the bureaucratic leg work for you as possible. The old lady at the register though? I do not say this lightly: she has a problem with customers whose names aren't in English. If your name is Nguyen, Vivek, Sharif, Varin -- expect some rudeness at the counter. When you try and help her out by politely introducing yourself or going over the pronunciation of your name she rolls her eyes at you or audibly scoffs. Worse, she'll look you in the eye and "translate" your name into an English name she believes is a rough equivalent. Joaquin becomes Joe, for example. Yes, basically she thinks this is the 19th Century and she's a guard at Ellis Island. Here is the deal with living in a cosmopolitan city like New York: None of us can be expected to know how to pronounce everyone's name. There's folks here from every corner of the globe. But it's a sign of basic respect that we agree to try and that we never, ever enforce an English-only vibe. It's ok if we mispronounce a name in good faith. French folks called Jean are used to being called Gene for example. It's ok if folks ask and say something like, I'm sorry, can you tell me how to pronounce your name? But we *try*. Until the lady at the cashier taps down her hostility, I'll be filling my prescriptions at the CVS on 42nd and 10th. The service there is impersonal, but the staff is multicultural and I can do with a few less micro-aggressions in my day. read more

Finally fed up of the nightmare that is Duane Reade? Terrible service, long lines, poor management, too many tourists, pushy sales people, poorly stocked shelves, etc. Time to forgo convenience of the corner DR and look for somewhere else in the neighborhood. If you are looking for a place to fill your prescriptions, buy soap, bandaids, and toothpaste; a place with professional, friendly, and knowledgeable staff who are willing and able to answer questions about medications and treat you with courtesy: Thriftway is the spot. I recently called to see if a prescription my doctor sent over was ready to be picked up. Apparently the doctor's office never sent the script, but Chris was able to contact my doctor, sort out the confusion, and fulfill the prescription in under a minute flat--all while I waited on hold. Brilliant! I can't stress enough how impressed I am with this place. It has a very personal feel about it, and they carry a surprisingly decent selection of toiletries. Do yourself a favor and bring your business here next time. read more

Not what I expected at all! I thought "Thriftway" would be a tiny hole in the wall with only a couple old bottles of Pepto gathering dust... This pharmacy is compact but has JASON and Alba products that I usually see at Whole Foods and ton of variety. I found the right deodorant and shampoos and will definitely be going back. read more

Just gotta tell you! I have been living in this neighborhood since before they've been around here. They have always been so helpful and caring, which is a quality hard to find anymore. Beside their amazing service is, Their prices on the items I have purchased, are like HALF the price of Rid Aid, and Duane Reade. For instance, I bought Receipt for $3.99 at Thiftway, the same was $8.99 at the chains. Way to go Thriftway. read more

This pharmacy is small but it always has everything I need, from western prescription medicine and homeopathy products, the best of all they delivery to local resident when we can get out, I have exertion asthma and it take me a while to get any where so when I need to refill my medicine they delivery it. read more

Growing up in flyover state, my family used the local pharmacist . He had his own independent shop and provided the type of service sorely lacking in the major chains Yeah, I'm mean you CVS, Duane Reade and Walgreens. In fact, my parents after 45 years still use him and now his son. Chris and the gang at Thirftway remind me of my family pharmacist. Taking the time to know you, your needs and most importantly help and guide you through the labyrinth of prescription drug coverage. I walk in my new scrip or call with a renewal and boom! it's ready very quickly. No 20 minutes on the phone and signing for UPS packages like you need to do through mail order. Or standing in line for 20 minutes just to speak to the pharmacist about a simple issue. Questions about OTC meds? They can help you with that as well. Regular toiletry items? Yup, stock them too. Oh and the prices are as competitive as the chains. So, if you want service with a smile, be treated like your a close friend or family then stop on by. read more

I tend to use only natural skin products such as soap, shaving cream, etc. because I am allergic to the additives they put in mainstream products, in which this pharmacy provides a wide variety of what I use. However, I only tend to go here when I don't have time to go to Westerly on 54th and 8th (I live much closer to Thriftway so its more convienant for me), but the prices for everything is OUTRAGEOUS. My wallet feels robbed whenever I go in there, I pay several dollars extra for the same products that I buy at Westerly. Even for things they sell at Duane Reade and Rite Aid is cheaper there than what they carry. Unless you absolutely need something from there last minute, take the walk to Westerly or somewhere cheaper for your products, its simply not worth it to pay extra. read more

I'm a little slap-dash about my prescriptions so I'm super glad I have Chris, the owner and pharmacist, in my corner. A friend told me her Dr. wrote her out a prescription for pills that will last her for the next year and my first thought was "Chris, would never let me get away with something shady like that." He's a good person and it also reflects in his staff. They've never been anything but helpful. Chris is a very thoughtful pharacist who makes sure my mother and sisters prescriptions are delivered on time right to our apartment. They are also pet friendly. I am a Native New Yorker, who values loyalty and kindness, and who believes that true New Yorkers are the warmest people. That said, I would not go to any other NYC pharmacy in all of our fair city! Chris, originally from Brooklyn, is a NYC Gem!, and simply paying him a visit is medicinal! ; ) Chris is the Chemist/Owner of Thriftway Pharmacy, NYC, on 10th Ave., and he is The Best, Chris is a gentleman, professional, efficient, kind neighborly, and, he is also knowledgeable about his product, as well as about medical conditions, as attested to by his accurate medical assessment, which was more spot on and helpful than my MD! And to top it off, he truly cares about serving the customer, as well as keeping you healthy, and well taken care of, in his store, AND he delivers!
