Great little pub. I only sat at the bar for a beer and appetizer. The fried okra are excellent. Beer selection was good. Tv's are a little awkwardly placed but adequate considering the layout. Food is usually good. Depending on your waitress, service can be great or not at all great. Ask the waitress what the "specials" are as they may intentionally fail to mention them and then charge you full price for a "special" you ordered. This has happened to us and then the waitress acted like we were inconveniencing her to adjust our bill. DELICIOUS FOOD TURNED BAD BY TERRIBLE SERVICE Wanted a burger after soccer practice with my son. I'm usually a big fan of supporting local businesses as you generally get a better quality product for a good value. Instead I came to the Drum and Quill and got taken advantage of by an upselling waitress. They were advertising two specials, dollar off drafts and dollar off tacos for 'taco tuesday'. So I decided to take advantage of this, my 8 yr old son wanted a plain cheeseburger. The waitress asked him if he wanted fries with his burger and bacon. He of course said yes, I of course assumed that the fries came with the burger. The waitress never made any indication that it didn't. She also sold me on the 'special' buffalo chicken tacos (3 chicken tenders on 3 slices of lettuce in tortilla. Which she then offered me a salad, which I turned down after asking if it was extra. At that time I also told the waitress that I would be putting in an order to go for the green tomato burger (yes I will take fries with that too). Then came the bill, what should have been $32 came out to $42 with all of the 'upsells' that were not declared as 'upsells'. Who charges extra for fries instead of freshly made chips? My beer was not at the special price, and the buffalo tacos were 3 dollars more than the tacos that I originally ordered! When I questioned the waitress about this, she got surly and informed me that it was in the menu and nobody ever questioned it before. We then sat around for another 30 minutes waiting for the burger that we ordered to go to come out. I feel like I was absolutely taken advantage of and brushed off. The food is delicious, but does not warrant the terrible service and predatory tactics. Save yourself the heartache and go somewhere else. read more

My wife and I have been here several times over the last few years and the quality of the food has continued to decline and sad to say this will probably be our last time we will spend money at the Drum and Quill. Our appetizers came out fast, and we quickly learned why... they were pre-made. The breading on the chicken wings was soggy, the chicken was cold and the sauce tasted like it was straight Texas Petes. The fried green tomatoes were cold as well and slightly burnt and the taste was over powered by a heavy dose of balsamic vinegar. There was an "issue" with the draft beer I selected and the bar tender told me to make another selection. I will say the atmosphere was fun and the music was good... but the food was not worth the money that the Drum and Quill charges. You can do better at any tier 2 chain restaurant. Great staff. Very helpful and talkative. I took Kelly's recommendation to put the slaw at the filler in the tacos instead of the regular one. It made all the difference the regular filling was a little dry. French onion soup was also great . Nice amount of rosemary and thyme in the broth. ( which I need to clarify this for people not around from here; that is not what usually happens. Usually you get stuck with indifferent servers or bartenders who think they are doing you a favor by showing up to work. CRAB CAKES We had two in our party. It was a Thursday night at 7:30PM. There was no hostess when we arrived. We were finally seated after a couple of minutes by the only waitress. They were obviously understaffed for the crowd in there. We started off by ordering our beverages. The waitress was nice and continued to check on our progress throughout our visit. After a few minutes, we completed our order for entrees. She had a crab cake sandwich with zucchini and a salad. I had the crab cake entrée with the potato soup and a salad. We got our salads very quickly... the beverages had not yet arrived. The salads were fairly large with a nice bed of green leaf lettuce, tomato and cucumber. The waitress said she would get our beverages. She brought them promptly then. The entrees arrived just after we finished with our salads. The waitress told us that they usually weren't busy on Thursday s and offered us a free crab leg cluster for our wait, which we accepted. OMG these were the best crab cakes I have eaten in a long time. Superb! If you visited when they were out of crab cakes... give Grotto's another try. The crab legs were awesome also. They were cooked just right and a good size too. Food like this doesn't deserve anything less than 5 stars. They have some work to do... please don't pass this one by. Count on about 2 hours for dinner and give them a chance. The service was warm and friendly, and the food was somewhere between great and awesome. I will definitely go again the next time I'm in Southern Pines/Pinehurst. This place is a little out of the way... but a real find. If you'll notice the bad reviews... most of them are for less than timely service and running out of crab cakes. Guess we missed the live music and out door seating (too hot for me tonight).Suggestion to the owners: staff up, advertise and order plenty of crab meat. read more

We went there last night with a large group of what people in Boston consider "heavy hitters". It was a Pinehurst golf outing and we were pretty much begging people to take our money via drinks and tips. Well did we come to the wrong place for that. To be fair we caught the bartender and waitress in a bad mood because prior to us arriving they were dealing with two women who remind me of Branch and Poppy from Trolls during Trollstice. They were bombed and one of them (I think Poppy) started screeching and the bartender had enough. Screamed something like "I am the bartender there will be nooo yelling in my bar". We were actually on her side but the mood continued through the night. We even offered $200 to change the Pandora station just to get the mood back. Actually at one point we offered $20 to go back just for 1 steak tip. Didnt even want it cooked. Again, not to brag, heavy hitters. So the night went on so awkward you could cut the tension with a knife (wish we were cutting a steak tip tbh) and then they forced last call on us like masks in schools. The thing that bothered me the most you ask? When we all left A woman who was friendly with the barkeep walked in and was served a drink. Anywho - 2 stars because we did use the time to come up with an invention called CrocXers which are boxers but have holes like crocs. read more

Slow initial service with no refills, border line unfriendly. Holy salty clam chowder batman! Burger burnt on the bottom definitely no hint of pink. We went today between a wedding and a reception. We had 3 hours to kill. We planned on hitting a couple of different bars while we were in town. JJ was the bartender and because of her we stayed there the whole time. She made a great drink for my wife and was great all the way around. Would go back just to hang out with JJ. I came here with a big group on a Friday night, and we left so stuffed we could hardly move. We got a bunch of apps to split, including fried okra, pimiento cheese dip with wontons, and fried green tomatoes. Everyone loved the apps, especially the wonton/pimiento dip combo. Most people with me got either the fish tacos or the Nola BBQ shrimp but I'm vegetarian, so I got the Caprese panini with a side of grilled veggies. The sandwich was good, and the veggies were superb. Two of my friends tried the veggies and agreed they were some of the best grilled veggies they ever had. Overall, the beer was great, the service was warm and friendly, and the food hit the spot. I will definitely go again the next time I'm in Pinehurst. read more

Just wanna say that I enjoyed experience from the invirment to the food. I love the small pub feel and the servicers were all sweethearts. Our waitress, I believe her name was lacy, was great. I order The North State chicken wings with the sweet and sour sauce, and my wife ordered the buffalo boneless tenders. We both had no complaints there either. But the only thing I would say bad is the kitchen could have been a little quicker getting our order done, But overall great place to eat. We'll be returning soon. read more

Definitely above average for pub food. Way above. I was instantly greeted by a friendly bartender. The chef came out from the kitchen and offered me a sample of the special: chicken and dumplings. I'm not normally a chicken and dumpling fan, but his sample won me over. I normally think of this as a heavy, creamy, greasy dish. This was not such. It was clean and light; as light as dumplings can be.The dumplings had a perfect texture: not too mushy. Although I ordered the dumplings, I could not resist also ordering the Quill Tenderloin sandwich. A 3 ounce grilled fillet mignon served on an English muffin stacked with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, and brie. It was also really good. The beer selection was a little lacking, but I have come to expect this in Pinehurst. They are just catering to their clientele. If you like a friendly pub atmosphere with quality food, you will love this place. Five stars because this is a pub. And for a pub, it gets five stars. read more

We went today after church and there weren't many people there since the rain and cold scared everyone away. The food came out quickly! I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and it was huge!!! Plenty of food for 2 people. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the kids meal was 8.00 and didn't include the drink, which was another 2.00.
