It is relatively small in terms of seating with only a few true tables and the rest being high-tops along the wall and counter. The barista was nice and it has some really cool artwork as well. What a GEM! Drink Happy Thoughts is not only an amazing coffee shop, it brews positivity in every beverage. I love the message this place offers. Checked out this pretty small but cozy coffee shop in Uptown on Montrose. Drink Happy Thoughts is a clever name. It more importantly has good coffee too. Good place for doing work or just chilling. There's also a few cookies and other pastries. A limited menu but it's big enough. It's about $6 for a latte. The last time here I got the Nutty Professor. Has a pretty good combination of nuttiness and sweetness to it. This is made with a double shot of espresso, and pistachio and rosemary syrups. It's about $3 for a cookie. These are pretty limited in options. Good place to get perked up in the morning or any time you can. It's located on Montrose east of Sheridan. The hours are kind of limited because they close early even on weekdays. read more

Near the eastern end of Montrose before you reach Lake Shore Drive (nope, not saying its full government name), you're going to catch this quaint, lowkey coffee shop that holds a powerful menu full of incredible coffee, teas, and hand crafted espresso drinks. While they have a standard set of drink options, there is also an additional seasonal menu, giving you some fun items to choose from and get through the days. On top of that, there are also baked goods on display as well as a little food menu too. There's not too much seating available and there is usually only one batista on site, so when there's a line it can take some time to get your order. I can say though, the personal charm of Drink Happy Thoughts does its own work of bringing you back for more. It's a wonderful space to work, chill, and people watch, especially if you manage to get a seat at their only table right next to the window. The staff is very very friendly here. Always so warm, asking you how is your day, genuinely wanting to get to know you; it really lives up to their name by drinking and thinking happy thoughts. All coffee drinks are brewed with Happy Monday beans, and these beans are available for purchase, along with other accessories and apparel (I have been eyeing the beige sweats with the melting smiley face tbh). Cold brew person? They got it on the menu and they also sell them in bigger batches. The vibe here is pretty ideal for a café. The tunes they got playing on their TV tie the whole relaxed style in this space. It really makes the coffee taste all the more sweeter. Living near here is a huge plus, but even if this location is out of reach, they have a second location in Humboldt Park. My buddy and I found this spot quite by accident one morning while trying to find a different cafe. I'm glad that we ran into this one first, because it's difficult to believe that the other spot would have been better. The sign outside just says "coffee", so I had no idea what the actual name was until we were inside. They should really change that. But once you've ventured inside you'll be glad that you did. It is really welcoming, and while seating is limited, there is a nice comfy booth right next to the entrance, as well as a few high top seats and a couple of tables. The guy running this place is super friendly, and really knows his stuff. He was very knowledgeable about all of the drinks and made helpful recommendations for how to modify things to fit our taste. We went with a Bee Sting and a Marry Me, Mel. My wife's name is Mel, so I was obligated to order that one. I don't think she was crazy about me saying that to someone else, but that tune changed once she tried the drink. Both drinks were fantastic, and had a great balance. The Bee Sting is a little spicy, but really pleasant with the sweetness of the honey. And the Marry Me isn't too sweet at all, but really fragrant and easy to drink. We came back the next day and all ordered a Marry Me we were so impressed. I can't wait to be in this neck of the woods again. We will absolutely return here. No need to scope out other joints. I liked this place quite a lot. The employee who fixed up my order could have maybe been a bit friendlier--I'm not sure if they said anything besides asking me how I was going to pay and naming one of the drinks as they finished it--but hopefully that was just a fluke? But they were wearing a mask so I super appreciated that. I had been curious about this place for over a year before I found out what it was (so, about a year ago or a bit more) when driving down Montrose and I saw the honey bear mural. Obviously as a Cubs fan, the Cubs bear caught my eye! But this is a such a nondescript storefront that I only learned what it was a month or so ago. It's small. Very small. One of those below grade shops you find in Chicago sometimes. There's one large table by the window facing Montrose, and a couple (somewhat uncomfortable looking) stools at the bar, with a two or three two-top tables rounding out the seating. It wouldn't take much for it to be pretty crowded but it was empty when I was here yesterday around 12:30. I honestly am blanking on whether there's parking along this stretch of Montrose--there must be--but there are several parking spots, which was pretty unexpected. Enter like your going to Ross. The drinks are good. I'd say that this place and The Coffee Studio are my faves of the ones I've tried in the area over the last couple months, for different reasons. Chai is my go-to drink; I don't drink coffee and I don't like tea. So while The Coffee Studio has my favorite chai in general, I really like what DHT is doing with their drink menu. They're inquisitive, exploratory, and dynamic; you'll find things on their menu that you won't find in other places, and that sets them apart. They'd have various drinks they seem to rotate through their specials menu (I'm really wish there was a non-coffee version of Hermione's Adderall!), so they're switching it up, and they have drinks on their permanent menu that are are unusual as well (Figgy Stardust, I'm looking at you!). I'll be honest, sometimes it feels like us mom-coffee drinkers are just paid lip service at coffee shops because most coffee shops will have up to three non-coffee drinks: Chai latte, hot cocoa, and tea (occasionally a matcha latte, so good for my green tea-loving brethren!). But DHT feels like they're actively trying to be inventive with their non-coffee menu, to appeal to more than just the coffee crowd. That really does make give me happy thoughts! Case in point: Their mystery chai, while expensive, is something I will look for each month or two; it's something new that this place is doing and it is fun to see what they come up with, since most places don't go beyond the basics with chai. I had my first today, and I'm honestly really curious what was in it--was that an extra pumpkin-y flavor I tasted? Something savory-sweet, like date? Unfortunately, I didn't realize/remember that the deal with the mystery chai is that you can guess the flavors... and it's a bit of a bummer that the barista didn't mention that. So hopefully you'll keep it in mind. (I only remembered it when looking through the photos I took to post with this review, since it was listed on their speci I'll be back to Drink Happy Thoughts, and perhaps next time will remember the thing with the mystery chai (though I don't expect I'll ever correctly guess the flavors!). I hope they keep up their exploration--especially for those of us who are coffee-averse. :) read more

I came here on a whim and tried to find a nearby coffee place in Viet town. They have a bunch of unique latte drinks, too many to choose from, so I just went with the cardi's mom's rose latte, which is a blend of cardamom and rose. The latte has a great combination of the 2, and the cardamom is just a hint stronger than the rose. The space is small. There are a few tables and bar seating. For lack of better words, it is a true Chicago experience with references to the muralist Sentrock and his mural you can fly higher and the street art walls. Not to mention it is so cozy in the front booth. There were zero coffee snob vibes there, it was just simply welcoming, clean, and our barista was so nice. NOW let's talk coffee. The employee was playing EDM music and was gradually turning it up louder and louder while saying "maybe if I turn the music loud enough the people will leave."
