My family and I came here for dinner on a Friday night and it was fairly empty. We sat in a booth and were promptly greeted by our server. The service was very good. I ordered the BBQ chicken plate with a side of baked beans and mac n' cheese. The beans were decent. The mac n' cheese was missing the authentic cheese. The chicken was served chopped and it had so many dry bits, I had to drench BBQ sauce on it to add moisture and flavor. Humm, where to begin?! This is such a fun restaurant & location, but.... humm... I hate to review this. Bare with me... Party of 6 Seated on the patio & had a heater... all great! Keep in mind we were really the only folks dining at 6:30 pm on a Mon night- restaurant empty!! Service STARTED great & went down hill quickly. 1. Ordered fried okra as appetizer. Fresh, hot, great sauce! 2. Took a while to get drinks, wine & water. 3. Server started so nice, then came back TWICE to repeat the order. She had it all right!! We have never had someone come twice to double check with an empty restaurant, what?!? 4. Orders came in waves, 3 came, then 2 & mine was "On the way". The 2nd wave took so long we swapped food to keep from being hungry & being awkward as the rest of the table wanted to eat there hot food. 5. My food NEVER came!! I asked 3 times from 3 of the various staff members waiting on us... never came. I FINALLY got up myslef to find the hostess who was mortified I had to go inside to tell her I never got my food. 6. My food came AFTER everyone else ate, and without the side of BBQ sauce. I had to ask for it. 7. As soon as my food came we were ready for the check... I immediately asked for a to-go box. 8. My niece ordered the same thing I did, pork quesadillas, and said they were cold upon arrival. 9. Server had the nerve (maybe it's me) to charge me for my meal or at least comp SOMETHING for the fact that I didn't eat that night. Anyway, the rest of my party said food was good. Service started strong & ended snarky & flat out rude!! Echo was our servers name. She lost my friends receipt & would not (or didn't know how to) reprint the receipt. I've had a lot of bbq in my life and while this place was cool it left very much to be desired. Sub par at most. I am a sauce person so I did like that they put a lot of sauce on the rib tips and it was good but it was not great! Maybe next time I will try the actual ribs. The mac and cheese reminded me of KFC Mac and cheese not a good southern baked Mac. The baked beans were pretty standard. I also had the big daddy squeeze which is essentially an Arnold Palmer but it tasted like unsweetened ice tea mixed with a hint of lemon, there was definitely no squeeze. This place was given the chance some eight years ago to straighten out it's act. It is usually dead, whereas the other places ten steps away are packed. Dreamland's corporate structure seems to think our opinions in Duluth are stupid, which is why this place is struggling and one day soon will pack up and leave. The service is terrible and the food is cold and dry. Someone definitely doesn't do it right. Their menu choices have narrowed drastically but they never were very good to begin with. read more

Go to Dreamland for their two signatures: ribs and banana pudding. They do both of those things right. Everything else I've had off their menu is just so so. That includes their BBQ sauce, which is perfect for ribs. A half slab will run you about $16. My son got a cheeseburger that looked real big and juicy. He enjoyed it! I was so disappointed! The ribs were definitely not "fall off the bone", but rather like leather. Very tough and chewed. The stew lacked that Southern Brunswick stew taste I love. My first trip to Duluth, the only restaurant opened on the 4th of July, and what an enjoyable finger-licking good welcome lunch...wOw! The service was genuine, attentive and pleasant, even got a bit of a history lesson on Mr. Dreamland and his delicious bbq sauce. Honestly, if they sold his sauce in NJ, I'd use it on all my bbq. This was the worst BBQ meal we have had at any kind of place that advertises as a real BBQ place. The ribs are tough. They have more bones than meat. Best we can say is that the water is clean and the fried okra was indeed fried. There's a good reason this place was straight dead on a Friday night at 6:30. Stay away. Dreamland BBQ didn't take me to dreamland unfortunately. The best part of the experience was the smoke smell as we walked up. Our crew ventured into the cool Pearson's Alley area of Downtown Duluth, not sure where to eat and were all overcome by the beautiful fragrant smoke smell wafting from the center of the square. Our entire party thought the barbecue smelled fantastic so we decided to go to Dreamland. Sadly the dreaminess ended there. The service was great, and everyone in the restaurant was quite friendly.....but the food was underwhelming. My family tried a variety of different items, and all of them left us feeling that the food was ok, but not great. We tried the pulled pork, ribs, and a cobb salad. The pork was ok. The ribs were definitely the highlight of everything we ordered, but not good enough where I would return for them. The sides were good - everyone did like the mac & cheese, but unfortunately you can't build a restaurant on good mac & cheese. I've been to Dreamland in Tuscaloosa too many times to count but this is NOT DREAMLAND. The service is bad and the staff is worse. There was no one working at the hostess station, I had to find an employee and that person wrote my name and phone number on a random piece of paper and said she'd call me in 45 minutes (yes call). There weren't hardly any customers in the restaurant and while we waited we watched the staff talk everyone who was coming in into leaving by saying the wait will be extremely long. In the vast depths of my soul lies a chunky fella doing everything he can to bust out and take over full function of my body. I fight him daily. Some days I win, some days I lose! As my body ages and metabolism changes, the fight becomes increasingly difficult and that chunky fella takes control more often that I would like. For example, I was minding my own business just wandering around Downtown Duluth searching for Street Art when the sweet aroma of grilled pork tickled my nostrils. The fragrance might as well have been an obnoxiously loud doorbell to my belly, because chunky dude heard it, opened my belly doors wide and said "YOU RANG?" Full motor control of my mind was hacked as my feet forced my body through the doors of Dreamland BBQ. [ PREVIOUS VISITS ] I say forced because Dreamland and I have a little history. Several years ago my hiking buddy Jamarcus and I had nothing to do on a weekday. So we conjured up an excuse to take a road trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to eat BBQ at both Dreamland locations as well as the famous Archibald's Drive-In BBQ in Northport. If the battle for BBQ supremacy was a heavyweight bout, Archibald's would have been the old fierce Mike Tyson (prior to becoming an ear removal surgeon) and Dreamland would have been Pee-Wee Herman. It was no contest and we both decidedly ruled out venturing into a Dreamland ever again. This was August of 2014. [ CURRENT VISIT ] Fast forward 4.5 years to Parson's Alley, a gorgeous new entertainment/restaurant district in revitalized Duluth, GA which happens to sit directly on the Eastern Continental Divide. I literally teetered back and forth on if I should enter the restaurant or not, knowing my past experience. However, I'm eternally optimistic to a fault and thought maybe, just maybe, this location will be better than the original. What did I learn: 1) I really need to get control of inner chunky dude and 2) trust my gut. When in doubt, reroute! RIBS (no sauce) - 3 stars Baked Beans - 2.5 stars Mac n' Cheese - 2.5 stars Service - 4 stars [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] It's not that Dreamland is bad BBQ, it's just they aren't great either and as I battle Father Time, I need for any extra calories to be worth the price I will INEVITABLY pay to work them off! Dreamland (for me) simply isn't worth that price, but the restaurant is beautiful and the staff member who served me was incredibly friendly! Dreamland barbecue is a pretty nice looking place. It's definitely located in a neat part of town. The city is obviously trying to make things have a more and more upscale look. Dreamland is trendy and has a full bar. Something that's kind of neat about Dreamland barbecues all over, is that they have a cooking area where they're supposedly smoking meat right there in the restaurant, where you can see it happening. They cook everything over on a brick grill top above a brick oven roaring with burning wood. Of course, all the meats are sitting above the back of the oven where it's open to allow the smoke to rise and pass over the meats. The fires burn closer towards the front and it seems like they're trying to make it smoke more towards the back of the cooking area. However, the last time we went to dreamland barbecue was a different location and the meat there was far more flavorful led with smokiness. Here, the meat was sort of lackluster. It had a very, very mild smoky flavor was hinted at in the pork and the chicken. If you're looking for a strong smoke flavor you're not gonna find it here. At least not today. I found that the sauce was peppery and tangy- a good mix. It paired well with the meat and especially paired well with the seasoning that they place on all of their tables. The seasoning is a dreamland barbecue original recipe and they recommend that you sprinkle a little bit on your meats. Personally, I had the pork plate with the macaroni and cheese and I substituted my second side so that I could get a small cup of Brunswick stew - they charged us a dollar more, and that seems fine to me. The meat was moist, it just was not as flavorful as I'm used to at my favorite places. The macaroni and cheese was very creamy, but it didn't have a particularly individual taste- it was very generic. There was no cheese crust, it did not seem to have a special recipe or use a special thickening agent of any kind that I could discern. It didn't seem to have an overabundance of butter or anything special about it. In fact, it reminded me of macaroni and cheese that I've gotten at KFC. The Brunswick stew had a very tomatoey base, and a peppery flavor to it. It was tangy and sweet and had SO much more flavor than the pork or chicken did on its own. The barbecue sauce that they provided, was tangy and peppery, but they didn't offer any other sauces. I did not ask if they had other sauces, but since they didn't ask, my guess is that they don't have any others. As this is a chain, I suppose it's quality is sort of where I expected it to be. It's not particularly fantastic or the type of barbecue place that I WOULD say "you have to try it". You don't have to try it. However, if you're in the mood for some barbecue and maybe you're in the area, then give them a shot and reply to my post so I can compare notes. read more

If you Google "The Best BBQ in Alabama" you'll get back either Big Bob Gibson, or Dreamland. Luckily, Dreamland has a location in Duluth, Georgia. While Dreamland's Ribs are huge, and incredibly heavy, they aren't particularly meaty. And I'm not a big fan of the Mustard/Vinegar based sauce. As for Dreamland's "Chopped" Pork it taste great, but did have a strange mouth feel with the meat being diced into uniform small cubes. On a Sunday when there were very few people there for lunch, we had waited a while at our table before someone came by to ask if we had been helped. Table confusion for sure. This place was a bit of a disaster. We were originally excited to try it as you could see their smoker and that aroma was in the air. But it was a mess from the get-go. Our order took over 30 mins. to be served, with no acknowledgement from the staff. Our appetizer, nachos, arrived and they were literally what you would get at a movie theater. Warmed up Tostitos with movie theater nacho cheese and some barbecued sauce cover chicken pieces. Our main courses were ok, but a couple orders were incorrect. We were then asked to pour the incorrect sides off the plates. The waitress stated the manager needs to see it before bringing over the correct side dish. This seemed like a very odd and suspicious thing to do. To finish it all off, for the first time in my life, about 4 members of our party of 7 found themselves ill that night from the food.
