Finally got to Dr. Rolf's yesterday for a lovely lunch on their front patio. The sauces are the big winners here. Five different blends of savory and sweet just waiting to bathe your barbecued meat in mouthwatering goodness. I was particularly fond of the apricot peach sauce. The ribs here are legit, too. Lots of meat between the bones, and it falls off those bones so beautifully. Green beans could use more flavor, but the cornbread waffles are genius--get them. read more

A friend recommended this place, so I brought my family here for a late lunch. We arrived around 2 p.m. on a Saturday and found the restaurant nearly empty, which made me a bit suspicious. We ordered the nachos with an extra $7 of brisket, a side of mac and cheese, a brisket sandwich, a pulled pork sandwich, and a kids' pulled pork meal. Almost everything arrived at the table in under five minutes--except the mac and cheese. All of the food was lukewarm, aside from the mac and cheese skillet. The speed and temperature made it feel like they had simply assembled leftovers that had been sitting out. The sandwiches tasted fine but nothing special. The kids' pulled pork meal consisted of two broken pieces of bread with only a few tiny bits of meat and a huge container of essentially room-temperature tater tots. The nachos themselves tasted great, but they were also lukewarm and overpriced for the portion--especially since the "brisket" we paid extra for seemed more like taco meat. Our waitress was excellent, but the portion sizes and prices just didn't feel worth it. The food would have been much better if it had been served hot instead of warm or nearly room temperature. I wouldn't recommend this place for a family with young kids. Overall, very disappointing. read more

The smoked chicken was a little dry but had a good flavor. Potato salad was yummy. Pulled pork was good. Brisket was a little dry as well but the Mac and cheese made up for the meal. The chili was delicious. I'm not sure If the chicken and brisket is always on the dry side but other then that everything was very good. I ordered a sandwich, tater tots, and a drink, and with tip my total came to $30. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing this time. I've eaten here many times before and have always enjoyed it, which is why this experience was so surprising. The seasoning on the meat was extremely overpowering, to the point that it even changed the color of the meat. It has never looked or tasted like that before. I mentioned the issue to my waitress several times, but unfortunately nothing was done to address it. My family and I decided to give Dr. Rolf's BBQ a shot during our stay in Muskegon and were blown away! We each ordered the 1 Meat + 2 Sides Platters. We had the 2 ribs, brisket, and pork. The 2 ribs and pulled pork paired with the BBQ sauces at the table were tasty however the brisket was a bit dry. The sides were a knockout, complimenting our meals. How was there not a line out the door? The food was amazing, fresh and homemade. The brisket on the brisket sliders was amazing. The slaw on the sliders was clearly homemade and fresh. The chicken breast was cooked perfectly, the spicy jalapeño sausage has just the right amount of heat with a little melted cheese inside. Good news: I did not feel left out at Dr. Rolf's Barbeque as a vegetarian. There were three dishes for me to choose (nachos, quesadilla, and mac 'n cheese) plus the option to choose multiple ala carte items. I went a different I typically don't choose and ordered the quesadilla with smoked sweet potatoes. It comes with a southwest ranch, mango salsa, and chips. The smoked isn't an obvious feature, and the pairing of the quesadilla and the southwest ranch is a really nice bite. I liked the mango salsa on its own but didn't feel as if it was needed with the quesadilla given the sweetness coming from the sweet potatoes. As for the potato chips: no complaints from me! The dish came with a side, and I opted for the potato salad. That was quite nice, especially with some extra salt. I also had some bites of other folx in my party's sides, and they were all solid. All in all, I was pleased with the cuisine and would say "yes" to the suggestion of a repeat dining experience at Dr. Rolf's. It's a nice addition to the West Michigan food scene. read more

It's not often I eat at a barbecue restaurant where the star of the game is anything besides the smoked meat. I found this restaurant to be probably in my top five barbecue restaurants of all time. The reason, the sides Which I usually use as the difference maker to the smoked meat. In this visit I got pulled pork, and since they didn't have baked beans one of my go to difference makers, I ordered the buttered beans. They were described in the menu as smoky. These were truly a delight they not only with smoky, but they have been sweet and a little bit with time not a big sweet eater, but these were very delicious. I also got the collar greens, which I really only learn to eat in the last few years. But I have found that I like collard greens and these are probably the best color greens in Avera had my life. They two are sweetened Which probably doesn't do any good for my type two diabetes, but I highly recommend them. The pulled pork was good. It's very smoky and what you would expect from a good barbecue restaurant. Nothing much made it stand out from other pulled pork, but that may be because the sides were so good. Do you want to eat them first before even eating the meat I didn't wanna leave any sides on my plate and it's usually the other way around. I wanna make sure I don't leave any meat. The service was fine, our waitress I think was a little bit young. Maybe trying to fill in at the end of the season as people go back to school or something. I found her very helpful when I asked to get things like a drink refill silverware etc. but I did let that bother me from the eating experience. This place came up on Yelp while Nate and I were looking for a spot to get dinner before the Muskegon Risers game nearby. I liked the heated huts they had outside, but we decided to sit indoors since it wasn't too busy. We were seated right away and I was impressed by the service. The employees we interacted with were super friendly and polite. The menu consists of many typical bbq place items like meat platters, sides, sandwiches, and more, as well as cocktails, beer, wine, and daily food features. I usually get a meat platter and some sides at bbq places, so we went with the 2 meats and 2 sides platter, with brisket, ribs, mac and cheese, and collard greens. The food came out quickly and we were impressed with the portions. I tried a little of each of the sauces at the table and was surprised that the blackberry barbecue sauce was my favorite. It had great flavor and complemented the smoked meats nicely. The brisket was perfectly fatty and not too dry, but the ribs literally fell off the bone when I cut into them. The collard greens were some of the best we've had - not overly salty like I've had elsewhere. The addition of the habanero vinegar to the collard greens was amazing! Not super spicy, with great flavor. The mac and cheese was a little grainy but the noodles were perfectly cooked. Enjoyed an awesome lunch at Dr. R's. It was such a nice sunny day so we decided to sit in the greenhouses. The greenhouses are free to dine in & they are heated. What we ordered - I had the 2 meat / 2 sides platter with pulled pork and brisket. For my two sides I had the seasoned green beans and red chili. Both meats were cooked perfectly and they weren't dry. I LOVED the red chili! Fun fact - MLive.com voted Dr.rolf's chili the best in Michigan! And I'd have to agree, it was the best. They also have two other kinds of chili + you can get them in a flight which is fun to be able to try them all! Allen had the 3 meat / 2 sides platter with smoked chicken, pork ribs, and sausage. He had corn bread and potato salad as his sides. We both loved the potato salad, it definitely tasted homemade. All the meat is served plain with no sauce and then they have several flavors of bbq sauce on each table. The original bbq was what I liked the most. My top picks from Dr. Rolf's - the pulled pork and brisket. But really, it's ALLLL good. Our server Jordyn was kind and attentive. She provided excellent service. We sat outside and the waitress kept forgetting us, but it was understandable since it was hot. The bbq sauces were very interesting, I think my favorite was the peach mixed with the house sauce. We ordered the three meat plate (brisket, ribs, some chicken thing) with the collard greens and the yams. The collard greens were amazing. I think the brisket would've been pretty good, but it was so contaminated by the buffalo sauce from the chicken that I couldn't really taste it. Having been to this establishment before and being disappointed I thought maybe they were just having a bad day, so I figured what the heck...let's try it again. After looking at the menu I opted for the Burnt Ends. I placed a takeout order got my food and headed out. To be fair, the service was great, and the wait was acceptable. Now, when I opened up my food, I was shocked and to my surprise there were no burnt ends in the package. Inside I found cubed brisket floating in BBQ sauce. Now this may be what they are claiming to be burnt ends, but it is absolutely nothing like what is shown on the menu nor is it anything like what true BBQ houses serve. I basically ended up with plain brisket swimming in sauce. There was no bark to be found. I guess my first visit was not a "one-off" and this was confirmed by this visit. Came here while on a mini vacation with the kid. For starters I had the smoked chicken wings (really good just too much rub on it and ranch was excellent with it) and burnt ends (this was more like pulled beef with barbq sauce, just ok).They do offer i believe 4-6 sauces but none of them I felt was out cold. For sides I had Mac and cheese (good not great a little bland) and greens (some of the best greens I done had, slightly sweet). For meats I had ribs (good), smoked chicken (good), and sausage (really good, the better of the three meats). Overall not a bad place but for barbq yes there are better places. read more

This was our second time here and it was great! We were able to sit outside - which was awesome because we had our small dog with us. He had the brisket tacos and they were so good! The tortillas were grilled so they had a little crunch to them. I thought the pickled onions were the perfect addition. I had the dirty tots with pulled pork and they were delicious! Everything I wanted them to be. I even added a little of their Carolina bbq sauce. But the best part? The single serving of sweet cornbread waffle with strawberries and whip cream. Really enjoyed our food here! I got the burnt ends and the chicken "things" which were chicken thighs with buffalo sauce on them. The burnt ends were great and I don't typically like chicken thighs, but these were great in texture and flavor! The burnt ends are an appetizer, but I got them as my meal. It's a half pound of meat. The chicken thighs was also an appetizer but a huge portion. I could only eat about a fourth. There are only three kids meal options. One was pulled pork sliders and another a hot dog. We don't do pork and the third option wasn't something they could have either. I asked if we could do pulled chicken or something else in place of the pulled pork. Our waitress asked the kitchen and they said no. It was hard to order for both of our boys because of that. I did think it was unique that they have three kinds of chili! I like dipping my chicken in ranch and want to note that it's homemade and very herby/thick. Not your run of the mill ranch. We liked sitting outside in the nice weather with friends to enjoy a bite. Really great BBQ! Ordered the ribs, and white Chili my first time, during Rebel Road. The chili is spicy and tasty. So tasty, that I came back a second time to get another cup a couple days later. The ribs fell off the bone and the apricot bbq sauce, was my favorite sauce. The cornbread, the first time, was dry. Second time, it on point and delicious! Great BBQ. Stopped in while traveling and our server KayLeigh was awesome. I wasn't sure what I wanted and she recommended the brisket tacos and burnt ends (meat candy). They were both great and enjoyed the Mango salsa and chips that came with it. They have about 10 draft beers on tap and a good selection of canned beers and cocktails. Wonderfully friendly wait staff and an immaculately clean, relaxed atmosphere added to a large creative menu clinched the deal. Plenty of selections and flavors to pick from.
