We were looking for a great breakfast place on Sunday and found one at the Downtown Diner. We went mid morning, and it was busy with family. The waitress was enthusiastic and you could tell she actually enjoyed her job. She interacted well with other guests, made suggestions to travelers on Maine destinations, and greeted people who were obviously regulars by name. The food was delivered very quickly, especially considering how busy they were. The food... usually both my husband and I can finish breakfast. We couldn't! There was more than enough food. My husband is very picky about his eggs, and they were cooked perfectly without having to explain to make sure they were thoroughly cooked (he hates a runny scrambled egg). Even better, the have a gluten free bread option! I would would gladly give this diner a 10 star rating if that was an option. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the gluten-free choices I had. The breakfast menu is very celiac friendly! The service was amazing. The waitress even warmed my mug before making my tea so it wouldn't cool my tea! My husband ordered pancakes and he said they were the best pancakes he has had in restaurant in a long time. Good home cooked food, great service. I've frequented this restaurant for many years. It has been consistent throughout those years. Owner, Mike makes the best pies in town...especially the Strawberry Rhubarb, Lemon Meringue and so forth. You get the idea. If you've never been, I recommend going. read more

Another great spot in Maine. Following the Yelp reviews...found this little gem on the river front in Augusta. Again, clearly not a secret to the locals. I had a outstanding BEC on Texas toast as the wife enjoyed her scrambled eggs with bacon. Food was delicious and the experience overall was great. But as pointed out by other reviews...the home fries were bland and mildly undercooked. That was the one thing holding it back from 5 stars. IMO They need to get that fixed as it is a major flaw in the search for the perfect home fries. Friendly and attentive staff. You won't be disappointed. read more

When it comes to breakfast fare, Downtown Diner in Augusta does not disappoint. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and flavorful food make it easy to come back. I enjoyed my pastrami omelette with cheddar and my wife's breakfast bowl with eggs, peppers and sausage was out of this world. Great value! Labor Day 2015 brunch on the way back from Bah Haba. Service is 5-plus - friendly and efficient - something that I cannot find anywhere on the East Coast. North-East is usually fast, South-East is friendly. Downtown Diner offers the best of both. Food: Pancakes - huge and perfect Waffle - huge and perfect Fruit topping - we got a little argument here, I thought the raspberries were ripe and tasty while the rest of the party thought that they didn't taste right (I guess city dwellers are not used to ripe raspberries.) Eggs - exactly as ordered (and we had some challenging variety) Bacon - crispy ok Biscuits and gravy - good, but not of Southern grade Coffee - plenty of room for improvement here. --- If the label in the door is correct: "Best coffee in town", Augusta must be a tasteless sleepy place. There must not be any coffee that inspire and awake me. Don't get me wrong. The coffee isn't bad, but I am used to Mystic Coffee Roaster in Medford, Mass, so we are talking about a different coffee universe. read more

This little Gem has been hiding in plain site. For years, we have looked around the area for a great place with the right atmosphere for our "Weekly Sunday Outings" , and it seems it was right in front of us the whole time. We sat in a cozy corner table at the front window, while a polite young man ensured our table was clean and presentable. The we met our Server, Christine. She was also polite, with her attention to detail, upbeat personality and prompt service, she made the awesome food and Best grilled English Muffin I've ever had, an excellent experience for us both. Party of 3.25. 3 adults and our 2.5 y/o son. Collectively we had a blueberry muffin, two eggs over-easy with toast, eggs Benedict and a breakfast burrito. Muffin was freshly made and good. Eggs were as expected. The ham on the bene's was a little off. Thick but not great tasting. The burrito was great. Coffee NOT good. Watered down, which I also saw in another review. O.J. Tasted like it was from concentrate. I wouldn't not go again.. but I'm rarely in Augusta these days so we'll see. I really feel like this needed 3.5 stars but it wasn't a 3. Reviews were good, but we were underwhelmed. My wife ordered the chicken Caesar wrap and found it was delivered with no dressing and too much chicken (very little lettuce). She asked and received dressing, but that shouldn't be needed. I had the fish chowder (nice and not too heavy, though it needed a lot of pepper and some salt to lift it up). The fish in the fish sandwich was beautifully light and cooked. However, the onion rings were inedible: heavy, soggy, greasy batter. read more

Maybe would've wrote a higher review if I was ever even able to make it into the restaurant. Called over the phone to check how busy the place was because it's a holiday (duh, people still do that). The woman who answered the phone immediately yelled "I CANT HEAR YOU" directly into my ear, interrupted me as I was speaking, and then hung up on me mid sentence. I read good reviews on this place and was excited to check it out, but there's no way I'm getting yelled at over the phone for a simple question and then spending money on your subpar diner food. A nice local diner for breakfast. Most of the people the morning I stepped in seem to be regulars. I ordered the pancakes and everything came out as ordered. I enjoyed pretty much everything except the pancakes. I think they were overcooked a bit. Other than that, everything else was great. Very friendly staff. Good food. Great coffee. I decided to go with five stars instead of four because this place does what it does excellently. We just moved to Augusta and we've already been back for breakfast several times. The wait staff is super friendly and professional. The coffee is good and hot and strong. The service is quick and the food is tasty; we've been there at quiet times and peak times and the food and service does not suffer when they are packed -a good sign. The food is 100% standard, traditional American diner fare. Eggs your way, home fries, simple white pancakes and french toast, eggs benedict with "a few potatoes." I love that they give moderate servings of potato, because I've worked in restaurants and I hate to see how much food goes to waste. The sausage gravy is the rich, white, creamy give you a heart attack kind. I haven't tried lunch yet, but I imagine that is standard diner fare as well. Prices are very reasonable, especially their a la carte menu. And as far as I can see the place is clean, clean, clean. Always nice in a food service establishment. It's just one of those places that easily becomes a ritual... I'm a fan. read more

We can only rate based on what we ate, but the basics are pretty impressive. My daughter thinks the ham and cheese omelette is the best one she's ever had. And the pancake on the side was awesome. We twice in a year and found hair in my food twice in like six months apart. The homefries are plain and could be cooked more well for instead of mushy and more of chuckled potato with a lil crisp instead. Will try once more hoping it is better. This was one of our best breakfast experiences in Augusta so far. It was very busy but service was fast and friendly. Best pancakes we have had in town. The staff even suggested we go check out a rock shop a few store fronts down since we had to wait for our table and had our toddler with us. Nice place for breakfast. The service is friendly and efficient. There is an open kitchen which is very clean, nice to see. It was busy but we were seated quickly and coffee was poured within a few minutes. The menu is basic breakfast, hot food that tastes good, cheap and cheerful comfort food. I picked this place over the other cash only breakfast joint nearby because they accept credit cards and I do not carry cash. You have to park on the street but there were plenty of spaces on a Saturday morning. Couple of suggestions: - Coffee could be better, on par with Denny's, I guess some people like that; - Wi Fi would have been nice. There are signs to like and recommend them on Facebook, would have been easier if customers could get online without cellular data. Overall great!
