After 15+ years of being a dedicated customer of Down to Earth, I now officially give up. My total purchase over the years between patio furniture and plants is probably about $20K+ After my experience today. I am done. I know it sounds trivial, but I was there today to buy a simple railing planter container. All colors, were marked $21.99. I bring the last Terra Cotta to check out and am told it is $34.99. When I said this is incorrect, all I heard from the two cashiers is "sorry, this is above me". When asked, can you correct it? "Sorry this is above me". I am not a stickler on pricing, but this was ridiculous. No offer to check with a manger or any one else, just a "Sorry, this is above me". Guess I will go shopping on Amazon..... I've been here a few times over the years and I've always found the staff very helpful. We have purchased perennials and trees from Down to Earth. The last time I was there I was looking for something specific for an area of my yard that tends to be a little more wet than others. I asked someone working there for suggestions and she gave me MANY suggestions. She helped me select a few plants and gave me recommendations on planting/ layout. They have a huge selection. I find it interesting that most of the negative reviews are in regard to their return policy and pricing (all of which are clearly stated). I am always wary of Yelp users who have less than 10 reviews and all are 1 star. Some people just like to complain. Go to Home Depot if you want low prices, a return policy, and unhealthy plants. read more

In all my years of shopping I never witnessed such abuse as I did today. I went up to Down to Earth living to look at some patio furniture. There was a woman talking to the owner about the sale of a set they had agreed on a price and she was $200 short and he went ballistic on her, standing up and pointing his finger at her and going after her. I had to run out of the store. I never experienced this kind of behavior, and, I can guarantee I will never give this man a dime of my hard earned money!!!!! Omg. I have never been treated or spoken to the way the owner ,Stuart spoke to me. We agreed on a price. Unfortunetly when I got there I was 200 short. The owner went ballistic. Actually screaming and pointing a finger at me numerous times. Literally thought he would hit me. Told me to get the hell out of the store. Told me he wouldn't sell me the furniture at the list price. Only if you want to see someone totally out of control go there. It was insane. I bought today a plant for $47.99 which usually costs half this price. While I was still at the cashier just after payment when I saw the price on the receipt I asked them to cancel the sale immediately and refund me, which they refused to do. they gave me a store credit with a receipt that actually says nowhere store credit and they refused to write down in that receipt store credit. they said they circled the item...i understsnd they give only store credit on items you took home but this was right at the cashier and I did not take the purchase out of the store. the manager owner was out and supposedly they don't have the phone number! this is a crooked business to avoid if you don't want to get ripped off. the cheapest bag of soil 2lbs is $23 when everywhere it is under $10. read more

I have patronized this business for years and today wanted to returned 2plants that are clearly not healthy. the receipt stated exchanges or store credit only. Stopped by while in town for business. Wanted to bring my mother back some planters. DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!!! These owners are the worse. They are rude and condescending. I am a white male who observed them racially profiling a young woman. They followed her around and didn't even speak to her or ask if she needed help. However, they still followed her. I watched them speak to the white people. Never spoke to the people of color. Besides all of this, they were rude to me and my wife. Never asking to help us. My wife and I needed new small trees for our front yard after 2 died. Additionally, our perennials didn't come back, so we needed them as well. After visiting other nurseries in the area, we landed at Down to Earth and were blown away. The selection is amazing complete, the prices were by far the lowest of all for the same type/size/quality trees, shrubbery & flowers. The service from Andrew was great; friendly, helpful, informative & patient. The young lady that took care of us for perennials was also exceptional. Moreover, their recommendation for installation, Ray, was perfect. On time, and a professional and perfect installation, and most reasonable. Plus, all the added tips for care and maintenance. I will definitely use them for all my future lawn care as well as recommending to all that need their service. read more

I went into down to earth for the first time today. Gorgeous selection of unique merchandise! The staff was extremely friendly, I'm a little confused by the reviews here on this page because I had a completely opposite experience. Very reasonable prices, great adherence to Covid regulations, and very well organized. Would definitely recommend and would definitely return! I wish I could give them ZERO stars!!!!!! I went to Down to Earth today. It was the worse experience ever. I walked in and Cindy (yes, I had to ask another staff person what was her name) stared at me for about 15 seconds and didn't even say hello, welcome, how may I help you. She was rude and very unprofessional. The young girl who was the cashier left me standing at the register while she finished her text message. Their prices are higher than other local nurseries. That coupled with such an unprofessional staff was enough to make me stay away and tell everyone else in my circle do the same. Do not shop at Down to Earth!! They want your money, that's it. April of 2022 I purchased a bunch of bushes for my front yard. I had the 1 year warranty. Last week my husband went over with receipt and photos of one dead plant. My husband was told "can't honor it , you are 2 weeks late". I called today and spoke to the manager and she was rude beyond belief. I completely understand I am in the wrong for not coming in 2 weeks sooner BUT it was just beyond my comprehension how rude this manager was. I have purchased a lot of different patio furniture sets, shrubs, mulch, flowers for years Christmas decorations and a beautiful Christmas tree from Down to Earth. After being a loyal customer for so many years, I had a problem with my Christmas tree. After trying to replace bulbs and fuses I was told to bring it back after Christmas so that's exactly what I did. When I got there STEW had the nerve to tell me he doesn't think he ever sold that tree. I was of course livid and insisted I purchased the tree there. Stew BS'd me to calm me down and said he was mistaken and would have it fixed. Like a fool I believed him and actually purchased a table and chairs for my front porch that same day. Around a month later I got a letter in the mail saying Down to Earth didn't sell the tree. TOTAL LIE!!! I was so upset I called and asked to speak to STEW several times but no return calls. I must admit a lot of time went by without getting any satisfaction so I called D to E and said I was coming to pick up my tree. Well finally a return call to let me know they threw it away which I think is another LIE! The tree was absolutely beautiful with one strand of lights on the bottom of the tree out. Why wouldn't they give me the courtesy of a phone call to let me know I had to pick it up or they were throwing it away? I even had part of the tree in a quality tree bag. Last season we purchased our flowers, mulch and landscape stones from Celletti Nursery. The prices are much better, great quality and the people are very helpful and honest!! My family and friends have been doing the same and are very happy they did as well! Stew is a liar and totally ripped me off after spending thousands and thousands of dollars there. My dad walked into buy some flowers and later on understood that the amount of flowers he was buying was too much . I had intended to spend over $6,000 on 20 trees I needed and I was virtually left on my own because both John and Carlo walked away from me two different times. Sorry but you lost a big sale. Quality, service and selection! This is my second experience in purchasing outdoor furniture at Down To Earth. The first time was 20+ years ago, the second was a few weeks ago. Both experiences exceeded my expectations. This visit was more challenging as we are all dealing with the effects of COVID-19, but I must say the staff could not have been more professional, courteous or friendly. They handled this obstacle with ease. From my initial visit, yes I had to make a few trips in to make my final decision, to the day of the actual delivery, my experience was A+. As a Rockland County resident it is nice to see a locally owned business succeed for as long as they have. They must be doing something right! read more

Plants at Krocus nursery, which is near by, are healthier. At Down to Earth, they sell many perennials which don't come back in the zone marked on labels. I used to buy a lot here a year after year, but soon decided to be careful and only to buy what I know for sure will come back. Just recently I purchased one lilac bush from Down to Earth (Krocus sold them out - I checked with them before going to other place), it was the last one they had, but I needed 10 more and decided to order the same ones. Mike took my order and when the order arrived, I came to the nursery. Lilacs were standing tightly next to each other and I only looked at the front plant - it looked little different - the plant was narrower but little higher. I didn't scrutinize every one of them because the thought that I will be tricked didn't cross my mind. They delivered plants without me present and also stocked them tightly next to each other. I ordered to plant them and after they were planted, I saw that majority of them were much smaller and younger plants - few thin brunches and not even a sight of the earlier blooms - since I had the 1st one I purchased from the stock near other 10 I ordered, the difference was very obvious - I was sold the younger plants for the price of more mature ones. That shocked me. I contacted Mike saying that I want to return the lilacs because they were not the maturity I ordered and get my money back, but he replied that I only can get the store credit (lilacs are shrubs) - so they got my money through the unethical sale and now they want to give me the store credit. This incident was the last warning - I will stay away from the place. Krocus has unique, well taken care of plants and owners are there all the time and really knowledgeable and helpful. Plus we have a good Home Depot nursery close by in Mahwah. Lowe's has a good selection also and both - Home Depot and Lowe's have 1 year return policy on all plants. read more

The owner of this company pulled a Bait and switch where he assured me I was ordering a Sunbrella color Tuscan 11 ft umbrella and then shipped me an inferior company/color.
