In town to fete my brother's retirement and birthday and the niece insisted on taking us to this, her favorite place. Kid has good instincts! The family owned business focuses on making their own wines with ingredients from a variety of sources but they limit sulfates. Shelf life is shorter but the product is smoother and more flavorful. We opted for the wine tasting and were encouraged to select 6 wines out of an extensive list to sample. The lists included extensive and amazingly accurate descriptions. When these folks tell you black cherry notes you will swear you just ate your way through the produce section. read more

Five stars? Really? YES! This place is a hidden gem, hidden in plain sight in a strip mall. My wife and I saw the consistent five-star Yelp ratings, read the reviews, and decided to find out for ourselves if it was as good as implied. It was! We were greeted by the owners, Basil and Colleen, and learned about how they made the many combinations of hand-crafted wines (DTW buys juice from out-of-state vineyards and does their own blending, fermentation and bottling). We were free to choose six out of several dozen wine offerings; the $15 tasting included crackers and chocolates. We also chose to enjoy some delicious sandwiches served promptly by Colleen on hot, fresh croissants. The wine menu included dry and sweet reds, whites and roses that were varietals and blends, all hand-crafted on site. The written tasting notes for each were accompanied by excellent suggestions by Basil including which ones were his favorites; he offered free tastes of several in addition to our selections, included the much-praised coffee blend (amazing) and a Super Tuscan that seemed to change flavor after each taste. The tasting turned into a wonderful 90-minute epicurean delight! We took home our first bottle (coffee wine!), a great memory, and free T-shirts (this review is not quid pro quo)! We will be coming back frequently, I expect! If you read Stephen King's "11-22-1963" novel, this place reminded me of the diner that included a time portal, allowing the owner to offer wonderfully tasty food with 1963 prices! Down Time Wines has me totally Uncorked! I met these fine fellas at an Anniversary event at Nicantoni's where they were sharing their locally homemade wines. A business that started in a kitchen has grown into a sweet local business. I've never been a big fan of wine, thought it was a drink of the older generation and the proper folk with their pinkies out...or is that tea? Anyway after one sip of the Tropical Lime wine and I was hooked, and I bought a bottle to take home. I finally made it over to their Chandler shop, where they not only sale wine but host karaoke, painting and personal parties. (follow on FB for info) The owner let me sample a few wines and wine made gummy bears...yes you read that right GUMMY BEARS MADE WITH WINE!!! Needless to say I stumbled, I mean walked out with a few containers of those babies for adult movie treats and a few more bottles of wine. In addition to the Tropical Lime I bought a Vanilla Fig red wine, which my daughter said didn't like fig and drank the whole bottle in one night! These wines are magically filtered not to induce headaches or wake up with a hangover, lucky for her! And lucky for me the wine is not only fabulous is totally affordable each bottle $16 and under... We stopped in here to do a little tasting and found a couple of gems. Down Time Wines fashion all of their own wines using grapes from their suppliers. Complete all of there own bottling and marketing. This is a great place to stop in and get some wonderful hospitality, taste some uniquely fashioned wines and just simply enjoy yourself. They do have some traditionally fashioned wines like the super Tuscan, Sangiovese and Malbec. They also have a comedy night where stand up comedians provide entertainment, you can attend by reservation only. We have yet to do this, but we are planning for a future date. The wines are healthier because you don't get the tannins and preservatives put in most other commercially produced wines. Which means you can enjoy them without some of the effects like headaches and possible allergic reactions from those items. Leave your wine snobby ideas behind a give them a taste. read more
