It's a dive. It's an awesome dive. A fun time fueled by cold beer, great staff, good music and great drunk food! First of all each time we've been in we've been lucky enough to hang out with Katie the bartender - this lady is a winner with a great balance of sweet kid, love of fun and the toughness it takes to manage the likes of Friday night Village crowds. A great tap list includes both local and mass-market beers. Also a full bar with the usual suspects and all priced pretty reasonably. The topper though is a bar food menu that's pretty ridiculous - hot wings a dozen different ways (really good btw), fried macaroni and cheese, juicy onion rings, sliders - whatever you want. Brotastic dive bar shenanigans. Another stop during our random bar crawl through West Village. We have a couple of hours left to kill before heading back to work. The handy yelp search on the phone says this is within walking distance of the last bar we hit up, so here goes. We weren't specifically searching for DTH, but managed to stumble upon this spot. A few steps down from the street and we enter this little sports dive. It's like the college party moved from the frat house and into the basement. Rowdy is putting it mildly, and in a fun (insert national TV ad beer name) kinda way. It's Saturday night, and Down The Hatch's bar is packed. Not fire marshal level jammed nuts-to-butts, but the bar area sure seemed like it. Maybe 4-5 people deep, but I don't think they're all wanting drinks. It's just that there's not much room or open seating. We got some cheap beers, but no eats. We were on a mission to crawl this part of the city, not settle in any particular spot, although watching the drunken sh!t show develop is worth hanging around. Kinda bummed I didn't have an appetite because the bar bites looked good and the yelp approval rating on the snacks are trending positive. I would give it 5 stars because I've had some pretty spectacular moments in life in this bar and its pretty much where most of my friendships first blossomed when I moved to New York. But. . . . now that I'm almost 30, I just can't. It gets filled with NYU kids that want to play beer pong during happy hour on any given day. Though, I have been in here when its been relatively empty and had great experiences. I love half off the bar on everything because the bartenders will literally make whatever the hell you want and they always have a wide selection of flavored vodkas, which wins my heart over. I'm like a kid in a candy store when it comes to flavored vodka. I have to try them all. When you first get there and notice an empty booth, grab it. Those are the best seats to avoid the crowds and sitting at the bar isn't really worth it because people will be elbowing you all night anyway. The food here is great drunk bar food. My favorite being the cheese or chicken & cheese quesadillas, waffle fries, and chicken wings. You can get their wings at various degrees of spiciness. The mac n' cheese bites aren't bad either. I've surprisingly never tried any of their sandwiches though. I'm never in a sandwich mood at this place and generally just want snacks to share with people. But I hear they're pretty good for a bar. I used to be a big fan of this spot. Nice location and they have pong which is a fun game to play with friends. I unfortunately had a really unpleasant experience there with a bar tender yesterday 2/7. The bar tender yesterday was incredibly rude and possibly racist to me and my friends. I walked in with a group of 7 while the bar was entirely empty. He refused to let us play pong because 1/7 people wasn't drinking alcohol. They were willing to buy something else on the menu but he kept on saying if we got something other than alcohol it would be the equivalent of us loitering and ruining his business. He kept saying we were treating it like a library after all of us were drinking except for one person who abstains for religious purposes. I don't know if it was because my group was largely of asian descent but he kept telling us "this isn't a library". I don't know his name but he is the bartender with face tattoos and I have seen him have really rude interactions with people before. This is the first time I've seen it myself and the probably the last time I go or recommend this spot. Very sad. read more

They advertised brunch for $25 on their website but was $35 when I arrived, +$5 if you want a more variety selection of drinks. You're given a plastic cup that you write your name on (lose the cup and the specials end!), unlimIted bar food, and a wristband to order. I came early on a Saturday and I was able to get seats with a larger group of friends. The breakfast basket that was part of the brunch menu was DELICIOUS, it includes: 2 sausage, 1 hash brown, and 2 French toast sticks. I ordered two breakfast baskets! If you're a bar food person, tater tots, onion rings, and waffle fries are included as well. If you prefer buffalo wings, they're also in unlimited and come mild/med/spicy. WiFi is also free and quick. I would definitely come back because it gets lively and all the students from NYU seem to visit love it here. read more

Which makes me really sad to say as this used to be one of my favorite bars in the area.The last couple of times the service and quality of food has decreased significantly. I decided to give it one last try and went in on a Wednesday evening. The bar was relatively empty so I decided to sit at the bar. I sat there for over 10 minutes and was not acknowledged once by the bartender working that night despite my many attempts to get his attention. Not just me, there were a couple of other people waiting for him too. He seemed to be more interested in talking to only one group at the other end of the bar. I will always have a great time here. This bar isn't glitzy glamorous NYC, so tourist beware. It's an amazing, cosy and casual bar tucked under this busy street. It's a place where you can escape the craziness of the West Village and just enjoy a good time with great drinks and friends. The food (yes, there's bar food) and drinks are super reasonable for the area and are always made incredibly delicious. Coming here for their 5 hour all you can eat and drink deall requires some preparedness mentally. Come in with average expectations, and just remember what you are paying for! My group of 6 showed up at little after 11:30 to grab a table before the deal started at 12. $35 gets you one plastic cup , unlimited food, and unlimited drinks (4 draft and mimosas). $40 gets you the same deal but with everything on tap! Don't lose your cup!!! Definitely order food right at 12 because once it gets crowded it is a lot off work to get food on time as it's a bit unorganized. The best food are the wings and tots! Thankfully, getting drink refills never took more than a minute of waiting so it's definitely worth the money. It's the quintessential college dive bar. read more

Some buddies and I came to New York to watch the Dallas Cowboys whip some NY Giants ass...(sorry New York I had to throw that in there) but we stopped in Down the Hatch for afternoon grub and to watch football on Sunday. We get there and it's packed full of people having a great time, we find a table, and walk up to the guy behind the bar to order food and drinks. ( he's the manager there and I'm not going to misspell his name so it's the guy behind the bar for now) Super professional and welcoming us Texas boys to his bar. Food was delicious and service was great. The guy behind the bar ends his shift and comes around to sit with us at the bar. Olga comes in to bartend next and well she's nothing short of amazing. Great attitude, impeccable service with a great smile. We end up having more drinks and then the manager shows us the sister bar to Down the Hatch and we ended, which was probably the best night in New York besides watching Dallas Beat the Giants, of our stay. Okay holddup Before I start this review just know I'm am not a stuck up chick nor am I entitled. I know that when you go to a bar like Down the hatch; I won't be eating gourmet meals. But if I ask for a hot dog it better come out looking like or better than a hot dog from a NYC street cart, which I love btw. So we sit and all of my friends order the wings platter. I was just eating to be eating and ordered a hot dog. Not only did my dog come out after everyone's meal, maybe 10 mins later, but it legit looked as if it had a struggle life. I'm 20 years old so I figured that I might be questioned about my age but did not expect to be harassed and demanded my ID since I was just getting take out. The environment is incredibly fun and energizing. This is an excellent place for Sunday football...so long as you eat beforehand. We went for the $30 bottomless brunch deal which supposedly includes draft beer, mimosas, wings, fries, and "breakfast baskets". These legendary breakfast baskets should include french toast sticks, hash browns, and sausage. Regardless of your party size, they only bring out three of these "breakfast baskets" at a time, even if every member of your paying party ordered one. The french toast came out as a large soggy piece of bread. And they "sold out" of these baskets by 1 PM...the brunch service is from noon to 5. The rest of the food took ridiculous amounts of time to come out and rarely came with napkins. It's a fun environment for watching the games. Just don't waste your money on food. read more

Covid-19 Masking the intent of Discrimination I do not normally voice my experience through any review sites but the treatment that my group and I received on 10/24/20 at this establishment was downright disgusting. I will give you an overview of what transpired that evening, but it is also part of my due diligence to inform you guys of my overall experience with Down the Hatch. I'll start with the positive. Down the Hatch hosted an event, a year back if I'm not mistaken, where you buy a bracelet and get unlimited house beers and wings which I found to be a great deal. It made my first encounter with them a great experience. My friends and I huddled around and watched the football game accompanied by great beer and wings. The following encounter left me disgusted, hence why I am writing. 10/24 was a friend of mines birthday so the 7 of us met here which I thought would be great. This was far from the case upon my arrival. I arrived roughly at 9:15PM- 9:30PM and tried to purchase a round of shots for the table which was eagerly denied. Fine, no big deal because you guys close in another Hour and a Half- 11PM. I felt a round of shots would not be the biggest request for a table of 7 or be the most challenging thing to do but hey, "Your Pub, Your Rules". I was there for less then a total of ten minutes (no exaggeration) and had our table approached 3-4 times by two different hostess and a tough guy with a beard, to close out the tab and at this point being forced out. We were being bullied to leave. While trying to find out what was going on from the staff I was repeatedly being talked to as if I was a piece of $h!t. When things like this happen, I like to examine the overall atmosphere to try to gather the bigger picture and at that point it was clear to me what was going on. There was a total of about 40 patrons at the time all scattered in between groups of 2 to 3 people and larger groups of 10 plus towards the back. It just so happens that our table was the ONLY table consisting of minorities. Besides a total of maybe 3 other people and my group wearing mask EVERYONE ELSE WAS MASK-LESS besides the employees. ::Reason for being Kicked:: I was told that we were being removed from Down the Hatch because my friend put his mask under his chin for too long and he was already told about keeping his mask on, keep in mind we had groups to our right, left, and back NONE OF WHICH WERE WEARING MASK AT ALLLLL. I even asked the tough guy with the beard why we were being forced out as the reason seemed to be discriminatory (I pointed to everyone else clearly not wearing mask) but he just puffed his chest and began to try to bully me and my friends out. I left before things got further heated but made it a point to inform the staff that this was clearly discrimination. I could understand if we were being a nuisance or troublesome but my friends and I are not the type to cause problems. I didn't travel all the way from New Jersey taking a cab to a train to a cab just to be treated like $h!t by this place and to be honest it's sad that there are still people in the world who treat people like this. The food comes out unbelievably fast and I can't complain about it since the value is so great. I love wings and the atomic wing sauce does not disappoint, didn't stray from medium but if you like it hot they've got it! If you're familiar with this chain of bar in the city (Hair of the Dog, Gin Mill etc.) you know exactly what to expect from this place. 3.5 stars I came here twice a while ago and enjoyed my first time here. The second time not so much because I came and it was overcrowded with absolutely no seats and barely anywhere to stand. Unfortunately what they don't have is a lot of space. WOMP. It is a small location and easy to miss if you don't keep your eyes open coming down the block. It's kind of like an underground establishment. And as soon as you walk in, you'll see the bar area and some stools and on the right is the seating area and pool table/games. So let me just talk about my first time here and how amazing it was! I came here with coworkers and had an absolute blast. We came during midday since we got out of work early and of course it was not busy at all. We stayed here until about 6 or 7. That is how much fun we were having. We played pool, ordered the delicious wings they have and got some amazing and cheap Cherry Bomb, beer, and specialty cocktails. We also played beer pong for hours which proved me to be Beer Pong champion :) This bar is super fun when not crowded and has great drinks. I would love to come here again in the future before 7 pm as it tends to get really crowded after that. read more

Great Deals This is a loud bar, more for a younger crowd, but I liked it. The place is in a weird location, down a narrow set of stairs, in a basement of an old building, but it works. You can miss it, if don't give it second look as you walk by. They offer great beer deals most days, 3 bucks a bottle. The place has a nice lively atmosphere, if your looking for calm and quiet, it might not be for you. However; I was looking for a place to really get me going and this joint did the trick. When you walk in you automatically think dirty bar where college frat boys like to frequent. There's a major cluster fcuk at the bar and believe me, it's like that throughout the night. They serve up cheap solid drinks with a very generous strong pour.
