Even before COVID, this is my favorite restaurant in the Pearl area. Wondering why? Because unlike other restaurants, the food is consistently delicious and the outdoor atmosphere is relaxed. Exactly what I need when I'm enjoying a meal and a drink with friends. My most recent visit was May 2020, for a social distance lunch with my best friend who I hadn't seen in months. We sat on either corners, across the table from each other. My favorite item on their menu is the veggie sandwich. It's a massive sandwich packed with veggies (cucumber, tomato, onion, avocado AND guac) and a huge slice of feta. YUM! I always get it on sourdough. About half of this sandwich and fries will end up coming home for me to eat later in the day. I've also had some of the apps and I can say the dips are really good (anyone else a fan of pimento cheese?) and a fun item to share. I also love their rotating special frozen drink of the day. I've had the screwdriver for a weekend brunch, so good, and most recently a delicious frozen Moscow mule that had a huge chunk of ginger for garnish. With everything that's happening right now, their outdoor patio is a great way to be cautious but still enjoy a meal at a restaurant with a friend (appropriate distance, of course) or your family. Down On Grayson is a family and dog friendly spot that serves great cocktails and an amazing kale salad. My family orders the kale salad and strawberry cake (it's huge) twice a month, at least. The outdoor seating is decorated with stringed lights, and they have water-spraying fans that help customers cool down from the extreme San Antonio heat. I highly recommend the Kale Salad with chicken, Parmesan fries, and strawberry cake! This restaurant is ideal for a first date or casual Sunday dinner with friends and family. You have to get the Parmesan Fries! I keep coming back to this restaurant because the food is so so GOOD! I'm going to tell you everything you need to order. First, like I said, the Parmesan Fries. These are some of the best fries I've ever had! That shredded parmesan, roasted minced garlic, and parsley on fries is addictive! And in my opinion, they have the best burger in Texas. It's called the Char King, and I always get mine cooked medium, and ADDING BACON is a must! Even though it's $3 extra, it's worth every penny. If you want something on the lighter side, their Brussel Sprouts are phenomenal! Tonight I tried the Meatball appetizer for the first time, and those were remarkable too! And the Strawberry Frozen Marg, with sugar around the rim is perfection! The service here has always been great. Tonight our waiter was Clayton, and he was super nice and super attentive. I would catch him glancing at us occasionally to see if we were ok, and I thought: Aw! How nice! He kept saying things like: Let's get "our" appetizers out here. And: What can I get "us" to drink? And I thought: Aw! it's like he's eating with us! I also really like the vibe of the restaurant. I would say it's rustic, hip, and chill. The entrance is beautiful because you have to walk through the outdoor patio to get inside the restaurant. There's these beautiful lights on the trees, outdoor heaters and fire pits. It's really quite romantic. There's also an outside patio bar seating that faces the interstate, and a nice long indoor bar. I think if you're going on a date, meeting up with friends, taking someone out from out of town, this place would be a great option. read more

The cucumber martini is worth trying- delicious!Crispy fish was flavorful, but soggy. The fish tacos were the biggest disappointment with the bland fish under coleslaw of all things. A whole sliced avocado on top instead of a mushed version (basically what the Double Dip was) would have spread the flavor better for a more balanced taste. I had high expectations & they were met! I had some family in town & was looking for a nice restaurant to take them. We sat inside but I noticed they have fans with mist outside if you prefer outdoors. The service was great! I ordered a Caesar Salad with chicken & another person in our party ordered the Fire-Roasted Chicken (comes with a side salad & corn off the cobb). Let me start by saying we typically love this place. This visit was average at best. I'm giving it 4 based on past experiences. The wife had the grouper sandwich which is always solid. I had the fried chicken which I know is a tough dish for a restaurant that doesn't specialize in fried chicken on account of chicken can't be fried to order since it takes so long to cook. That being said, it was really dry and the crust was really hard from sitting under a heat lamp I assume. Had I been lucky enough to get it shortly after coming out of the fryer it would've been outstanding because the flavor of the crust was spot on. I definitely recommend it if youre into Reubens. It has garlic toasted bread, crispy while still remaining soft. The corned beef was on point and the I really enjoyed the sauerkraut, it had a balanced flavor, sometimes saurkraut can be too intense for me and I don't enjoy it, but I loved it on this sandwich and the thousand islands dressing went perfectly with the sandwich. My boyfriend devoured the Char King!! The reason I do not give this place 5 stars is because the service here has been hit or miss. We have gotten excellent service at times and have also had times when it has not been good. One specific time, our server took an extremely long time to come take our order, did not check in when we wanted to order drinks the first time nor to order more drinks, and was frankly just apathetic overall. It's located in the pearl area. It's a large restaurants so you never have to wait king for seating. We tried the fries and a few drinks and they were great. Finally had a chance to check this popular spot next to the Pearl. Folks rave about this place, and rightfully so. The ambience is cool and comfortable and the menu is close to perfect for sophisticated American dining. It's known for its extensive outdoor dining and lounge area. Dogs are welcome too. Food was a 4.5, easily. Sliders were AMAZING, as were the Crispy Brussel Sprouts. I had the Skirt steak, which was a little over cooked but otherwise great and wifey had Parm Fries and Wedge salad. Their cocktail menu was also solid. We each had two different kinds, so 4 total, and they were each great. We were celebrating, leave me alone! Dessert was a simple cheesecake, eh, 3.5 at best. Only knock for me was service. They get a 4 there. They also did start sitting us at a dirty table after waiting 30 mins to sit. Good service was just uninspired. It's also hard with everyone wearing masks so you never see a smile but convos are also just shorter and the connection is just never quite reached. I should remember the server, a face to put to the establishment, not just the food. But you know what, god thing for this place, I won't forget the food! And I will be back for sure to have more. We went on a Sunday around brunch time (a little after 12 pm; party of 4) and was seated immediately. The inside is so cute and the staff was really nice!! We started off with the nachos which looked a little suspicious at first but was actually surprisingly really good. I ordered the caesar salad with grilled chicken and it was pretty standard. Nothing too special, but also it's just a caesar salad so it's not the restaurants fault. What is not pictured is the mac and cheese which was SOOO good!! Great first time experience at Down on Grayson. We came in on a busy Thursday night and although we were told there would be a 20-30 minute wait, we were seated in 5 mins for a party of two. When eating out somewhere new I like to order an app, salad and entree to get a good idea of a restaurant's menu. It's very rare for me to visit a restaurant where every dish I order is delicious as typically one dish is good and the rest is meh. Well surprisingly that was not the case at Grayson. I don't drink alcohol so even my unsweetened iced tea was good. I ordered the Thai steak salad which had a light citrus dressing that wasn't overly oily or heavy. The meat was tender, the greens were chopped for ease of eating, and there was a nice mix of toppings consisting of cooked soft noodles, crunchy almonds, and mangoes and onions. So overall tasty and nice texture wise. For my entree I went with the grouper Veracruz. No complaints here. I enjoyed the side of petite carrots drenched in honey butter. My favorite were definitely the Parmesan fries. I'm not a fan of ordering fries at restaurants as they tend to be too thick and starchy but decided to try the fries here nonetheless. Their Parmesan fries were slim, delicious, and crispy and weren't heavily coated just topped with soft grated Parmesan (not the Kraft variety either). It almost tasted like there was a hint of truffle oil and it paired well with their chunky garlic aioli. Decided to stop by for an early dinner after returning some golf shorts that were SEE THROUGH at Nike. Was not expecting much even though it has pretty solid reviews but to my surprise everything was great! I started off with the Grayhound cocktail which was basically grapefruit juice and vodka. If you like grapefruit, you have got to get this drink. Super refreshing after a nice walk from the parking lot in the 100 degree weather! For the appetizer I decided to try out the Shishito peppers and they were pretty good. Perfectly charred and it also came with a light dipping sauce that did not take away from the natural flavors of the pepper. The main attraction for me was the fire roasted chicken. Tuesday afternoon means we must choose healthier options so of course I had to go with a chicken breast. The chicken breast was huge and was attached to the bone with a nice fire roasted skin on top. The breast itself was nice and tender but not too tender. I'd say it was a perfectly grilled/fire roasted chicken breast. It was also lightly sauced with a honey sauce which complimented the corn well because the corn had just a little heat to it. The corn was sweet and fresh and you could tell that it comes from the cob instead of a frozen bag. Our waitress was cool too and was very friendly and the service was great. I have to say. I was torn between writing this review and just waiting to see if I could give them one more shot. Sadly tho, I went with the review for a number of reasons. The main one being the fact that I was so excited to finally try this supposed gem tucked away near the Pearl District. I have been to the the Pearl several times but always with my kiddos so I chose the food places near the water area each time. Today I was child free and it was just my oldest daughter and myself so we happily walked on over after running errands in the area. Went inside. Greeted by a very friendly host at the stand by the door. (He gets the mandatory 1*) Good little wait, so we went to the bar to grab a cold water to cool us down before our table was ready. Got our table quicker than they anticipated, so we were stoked. Unfortunately, it was a huge LET-DOWN. Our server seemed upset. We had to say the first hello. She never smiled. Never said a word other than to ask about drink choices, if we were ready to order, or to answer a question we may have had. Ordered our food. Food was delivered and... that's the last we saw of her. She literally set the plates down and immediately walked away. My daughter needed a couple more things and we wanted to place a to-go order for my parents, but alas. We never saw her a single time we were eating. As I looked around I saw all these other servers going to their tables and asking how everything was, could they get them anything else, etc. and there I was wondering to myself 'why couldn't that be my server'... We sat after finishing our food and pushed our plates aside as to kind of give an indication we were finished, but still. Nothing. Finally I made eye contact with another server and she came over. We asked for a couple boxes and the check. The manager comes a couple minutes later with them and we pay. We obviously didn't order the to-go. I was so disappointed. Sad actually. This place gets so much business and they have wonderful food. There is zero reason anyone who comes thru their doors should receive anything close to the service we got. I am going to have to assume most of the reviews are from regulars that frequent often and are pampered because I cannot imagine them making it the way they have and having the reputation they have based on what I experienced today. The food here is great, and I've been here a few times. What became problematic was that their A/C is broken in the section where I was seated. I didn't know this. It was unbearably hot, but I did try to brave it out, ultimately too uncomfortable, and couldn't eat my food. I just thought that was the temperature across the restaurant.. When I saw other guests come in, the hosts mentioned the A/C was broken in my section and proceeded to seat them elsewhere. That bothered me some, as I wasn't offered the same accommodation. I ultimately asked for management and mentioned this. They agreed to comp my meal and offered that I also take my leftovers, but I wasn't feeling well after sitting in the heat. I really enjoyed dining at Down On Grayson. We visited on a Monday night in early April, and the weather was PERFECT for dining outside. The decor is trendy, and the atmosphere was very chill. This place is a perfect fit for the Pearl district. The crispy brussel sprouts were spectacular. The sprouts were unusually large, and probably because everything is bigger in Texas. These sprouts were like miniature heads of cabbage, and each was at least four bites. The crispy prep was excellent and the spouts had some char from the grill. They are served with a wonderful Srirachi mayo dipping sauce. I love this dish, and think you should order it. For my entree I ordered the Fire Roasted Chicken. The breast was huge, and again because everything is bigger in Texas. The chicken was slow roasted so it was cooked throughly, but still moist and tender. I wish I could do that; I would have overcooked the outside and the inside would be undercooked. The chicken was marinated and finished with a honey lime glaze that was excellent. It was slightly sweet and had a spicy kick. The side of off-the-corn on the cob was yummy. I would definitely recommend this dish. I ordered a Michelada drink from the bar menu. It looks like a Bloody Mary, but it's not. It is a Mexican cocktail that is made with tomato juice, beer, and lime. The combination sound very usual to me, but noticed it at Market Square and was intrigued. I didn't care for it, but it cured my curiosity. read more

I had saved this place since they are dig friendly and the menu looked very tempting. I visited because it is one of my cousin's favorite eateries in the Pearl District. We shared the crispy brussel sprouts appetizer and I had the panini with parmesan fries. The brussel sprouts were the star of the show. Throughout the meal I kept trying to discern what the cooking method could have been to have each brussel sprout so wonderfully crispy on the outside and yet tender on the inside. It occurred to me that maybe they're first deep fried and then finished under the broiler? I'm not sure but they were mind blowingly good. The panini was also quite wonderful. But I admit the parmesan French fries were not what I expected. I was expecting the parmesan to be tossed into the fries so they were nicely distributed and you get a bit of parmesan with every fry. Instead the parmesan is sprinkled on top. And it is shredded parmesan rather than finely grated. It just did not come together the way I was expecting and I was a bit disappointed. But this place is clearly a great venue for large get togethers. There were a number of people celebrating graduations when we visitied. Plus it'd be a just a cool place to hang out and watch the game at the bar or sit outside on the patio with your fur baby. I'll definitely be back. read more
