And it wasn't drivable. Anthony was willing and able to get us right in (within 30 minutes of calling him). He ordered the parts that afternoon and had our van fixed in less than two days. The cost was reasonable and was what I expected (having done this repair myself on other cars). He was conscientious and professional, and his communication was outstanding. He provided regular updates each step of the process so I was never wondering what was happening. He has recently taken over this business so the older reviews are not relevant. I would highly recommend M&M Service, and Anthony, for your repair needs.

The car starts shuddering and doesn't want to leave second gear. The engine may or may not turn over. The nearest service station is 10 miles away, down a winding road with narrow shoulders and a speed limit of 25 mph, without the rain pouring down. Baby decides now is also a great time to start crying and get a cold. Welcome to my experience this past September weekend. What should have been a restful communion with the outdoors in Northern Michigan turned into a harrowing, stressful time. After AAA towed my car to dry out at the hotel, and I left my husband to comfort the baby, I took my limping vehicle into town in search of anyone who might diagnose the OED 2 code. I didn't have the handheld reader with me and I direly needed to know whether my car's check engine light was the result of something minor -- say, a misfiring piston -- or something serious to justify staying another night in town. I came upon M&M Services after driving slowly to get an oil change elsewhere. Their Open sign glowed like a beacon. I pulled in to find a young man in the office, one bay occupied with the garage door down, and their hours boldly displaying they were open for another hour yet. Prayers for resolution answered? I explained my situation and asked if he could hook my car up to a OED reader. Advanced Auto Parts, Napa, Carquest, and other car parts stores with complementary reader services all shut an hour and a half before. There wasn't a dealership in Petoskey or Harbour Springs to help, and I couldn't trust taking the car an hour away into Traverse City. M&M had every ability to help ease my mind. "Are you from around here?" asked the kid. "No, I'm on vacation. We drove up. I am in a tight situation," I said. I should have shut my trap and nodded. "Can't help you." What?! You're open. You have a mechanic. I am not asking for anything untoward, I could hook the cable up to the OED2 port myself for all it mattered. He gave me the most uncaring look and went back to his desk, staring off into space. You are an auto shop. You are open. There are no other customers and I showed up an hour before the stated closing time. No one was working on a vehicle. It was a very simple request I was willing to pay for, if only to get a better idea of the diagnostic code. It turned out to be Cylinder 1 misfiring due to water getting into it, a simple fix by removing the spark plug. I found that out at O'Reilly's in Detroit -- something that took literally about 8 seconds to read. The non-existent customer service during a small crisis was disgusting.

I had my 2005 GMV Envoy looked at back in July by Belle Tire in Gaylord, and they quoted me at 850+ for tie rods, ball joints and an alignment. If I wanted them to do my bearings, too, it would have been upwards of 1200+. Luckily, the husband and I have recently educated ourselves on bearing and breaks (thank you, Youtube!) and did those ourselves, and in the process saved about $250 -300. But we had to put off the other work due to finances. So today, we finally got ol' Betsy in for the above work to Royal tire...and they are doing ALL of it, AND found that my water pump needed replacing, so the pump, too...for an estimate of a little over 900. Tie Rods, Alignment, Ball Joints and Water pump. Under a grand. To me, that is an amazing deal. I know of several other mechanics closer to home that would have charged me closer to 1500+ for the same work....and taken a week+ to do the work, leaving me stranded. Royal is doing this all in one day, by appointment. No muss, no fuss. And ALWAYS, the NICEST, MOST POLITE GUYS!!! I had figured that every mechanic came automatically with a sour disposition and horrible customer service skills...but not these guys. I was 35 minutes late due to slick roads and traffic. They took it in stride and understood. The front of the house fellow was Dwayne. My mechanic was Duane. Both of them were genuine, caring, thorough, and took the time to explain to me what was done. Both were complete gentlemen and the nicest guys I've met in the auto business to date. I will continue to bring my vehicles to these guys. They are the best, hands down, in a 100 mile radius, if not more. Oh, and BTW, my final price for all the work? Actually BELOW quote, for a total of only 823.00 !!!!

The transmission was slipping, and we couldn't keep fluid in it. It was also stalling when idling. We left a message at the shop on Sunday and got a call back first thing Monday morning from Gordy. The shop wasn't technically open Monday because they were to be closed for the holiday that day, too, but Gordy was in anyhow. He had us come in so that he could take a look at our vehicle and take it for a test drive. We originally thought we'd have to have the trans rebuilt, but after Gordy inspected and drove it, he thought the only thing wrong was the transmission cooling lines. He said he couldn't be 100% sure about that until he got into it, but he assured us that even if they did have to rebuild the trans, they would be done in time for us to head home Friday as planned. They had the truck done and ready for us to pick up on Thursday. Gordy's feeling that it was the lines and not the trans itself was right. They also found that the fuel filter was clogged, which was causing the stalling, and they replaced that as well. All was good with the truck to take us back home to Ohio. When we first got there, I was a bit apprehensive about having them work on our truck because of the shop's appearance. Let's just say it's not a chain repair shop, and it has a very "homey" feel! But Gordy and Bill were straightforward and down to earth, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. When we dropped the truck off, we chatted with Gordy for quite some time. (Our ride took a while to get there, so Gordy even offered take us where we needed to go.) During our conversation, we learned that Bill has had that shop for 40-some years and Gordy has worked with him for many of those, so these guys have a lot of experience. Plus, when we picked up the truck, Bill offered our dog a biscuit, so a couple more points there!
