The team explained that they called multiple times ahead of the appointment to explain the condition, what exactly would be needed and ensure it was an appropriate setting. The doctor scheduled to conduct the procedure had already evaluated the patient in-person and personally referred them to this center for her to complete it. Patient did absolutely nothing wrong, other than needing some assistance from their team, and a full team was present to work with them to ensure the Sutter staff didn't have to worry about anything. The RN immediately complained and was openly talking negatively about the patient in the hallway so the team denied service without even trying or consulting the patients team. Even after the reiteration that the procedure was urgent due to life threatening concerns and having a history of successful procedures with no issues, they refused service based on the fact they had disabilities that they were well aware of ahead of time. Very disheartening to see professionals in a field meant to help others be so discriminatory and hateful.

I sat for over 30 min after my scheduled appointment time, I even waited approximately 15 min to ask when I was going to be seen and why a patient that came in after me was being called before me and the receptionist said with a superior tone, "some patients need x rays and there are different doctors" (I literally heard the patient called for the same doctor as me), and then I was told by the nurse "I'm sorry about the wait, you were never checked in". To me that is unacceptable, it wasn't even that busy in the front, why wasn't I checked in by the receptionist? The way the receptionist dealt with me and my situation made me feel like she was looking down on me, like I was stupid or something. I'm very observant and pay attention to things. I had other appointments to get to, I even came in early.

I've seen Dr. Birkbeck twice, one for each wrist roughly a year apart…read more The first experience, I never got a clear answer, even after an MRI and cortisone injection, as to why I was in pain. The second experience I chose Dr. Birkbeck because I thought I was an existing patient since it'd only been a year (turns out, I wasn't. They charged my insurance for a new patient exam...the bill in and of itself is a whole other issue.) I had been in a motorcycle accident on 7/6 and received a diagnosis in the ER for a left wrist fracture. When I showed up 4 days post accident, he took me out of the ER splint, put me in a cock-up wrist brace and sent me on my way for another week. Then he puts it in his records that I agreed to the brace! (I would have much preferred a cast for the stability) He also spent less than 10 minutes with me in the exam room, and I wasn't swollen at this point. I then go back, at this point 10 days post accident, and get follow up x-rays in which he informs me there's been no change...well no kidding duh! I can remove the brace to shower (he told me I could) and it was not stable enough so it was moving! I then explain to him that with my work, the brace wasn't stable enough for me and he says, and I quote "I'm glad you told me. We can switch it up or I can put you in a cast, IF YOU'D LIKE". What is this, patient is the doctor for the day?! So I opt for the cast, and his medical assistant Crystal puts it on way too loosely. I have to come back in two days later for a new cast to be put on! Luckily, this time around, Taylor Luis (his other medical assistant) apologized that I had to come back in and she cut off the loose cast and put me in a new, much more secure, one. Again, this appointment, the doc spent less than 10 minutes with me. I was then told to follow up in 4 weeks. They cut me out of the cast, took x-rays, and put me in the room. The doc comes back and says "your x-rays are looking great and you're healing up nicely. I'm going to put you back in a brace for two to three weeks and then I'd like you to start moving and using your wrist. But I don't need to see you again, unless you feel it necessary, and I don't think you'll need physical therapy". So I say "Oh so I'm healed?" and he says "No, you're healing"...So 5.5 weeks post-fracture, and he sends me on my way, not fully healed, and doesn't need to see me again? Didn't seem right. Especially after yet again another 10 minute appointment. I am now 8.5 weeks post accident, still in a brace because the pain is so bad I almost went back on opioids, and am going to eat the cost to see another doctor for a second opinion. Keep in mind, this was not a compound fracture that required surgery, a simple distal radius fracture. I would have given 0-1 stars if it weren't for his medical assistant, Taylor Luis. She has been extremely pleasant and helpful. When I called for my request for medical records to be sent to another doctor, she was very polite and understanding, not offended that I'm taking my business elsewhere. If I could review just her, I would give her 5 stars.

In the first 2 Visits through his knowledge and expertise, he was able to identify the issue right away! It was actually pretty amazing to see how fast he found it. An within one session of specialized treatment for the back issue, I immediately got my full range of motion back. I'm so grateful of his help because it has changed daily life for the better for me, and this is just one of the things he has helped me with among many other things. A Life-Changing Experience with Dr. O'Connor…read more I have been a patient of Dr. O'Connor for many years, but I recently experienced firsthand why his specialization in back pain is so legendary. After a simple move--picking up a pair of pants--my back went out completely. I was in excruciating, incapacitating pain. While sitting offered some relief, the transition to standing was unbearable; it felt like my whole back was lighting up. I reached out to Dr. O'Connor, and he got me in quickly. Using his years of experience and specialized tools, he worked on my back--bending, twisting, and carefully adjusting my spine. After about an hour of his targeted treatment, the pain was simply gone. It was absolutely amazing. This isn't the first time he's saved me, but this lower back incident was the most severe. If you are suffering, you don't need to rely on painkillers or live in misery. Dr. O'Connor has a plan for relief. He is a true blessing, and I cannot recommend him highly enough!

The nurses' professionalism, standard of care and compassion is second to none. The doctors are honest and patient in answering all questions. This is not your standard hospital. This is a military hospital where the staff works hard here despite other competing priorities such as military obligations. They also worked during shutdowns. Extremely Disappointing Experience With the LASIK Department…read more I am extremely disappointed with the way my LASIK surgery process was handled. As a soldier, I understand that medical procedures have strict eligibility requirements and that a patient can ultimately be found ineligible. What I do not understand is the way this situation was communicated and handled from beginning to end. Prior to my appointment, I was informed that the slight deviation in my eye could potentially result in disqualification. I understood that this was a possibility and was prepared for the procedure to be denied if the medical evaluation determined that I was not a candidate. However, after traveling approximately seven hours to the facility based on being told that my surgical packet had been approved, I was given a completely different explanation. Upon arrival, I was told that the deviation was not simply a potential disqualifying factor--it was apparently too severe for them to operate on. I was then informed that I would never be able to have eye surgery. That is an extremely significant conclusion to give a patient, especially after previously communicating something substantially different. If the condition was severe enough to make me permanently ineligible for eye surgery, that should have been clearly communicated before I was told my packet was approved and before I made a seven-hour trip. The only additional communication I received was an abrupt phone call from an optometrist who identified herself as Ms. Wang. The only instruction I was given was essentially, "Stop rubbing your eyes." I was not provided with a clear explanation of what had changed, why my previous information was different, or why I was suddenly being considered permanently ineligible. What was particularly frustrating was that the surgeon would not even speak with me directly to explain the decision. Instead, I was left dealing with an individual who was extremely argumentative and disrespectful in the way they communicated with me. Rather than treating me like a patient who was simply asking legitimate questions about a major medical decision, I was spoken to in a condescending manner, almost as if I did not understand the most basic concepts being discussed. I was not asking anyone to perform a procedure that was medically unsafe. I was asking for a reasonable explanation of why I was previously told my packet was approved, why the determination changed upon arrival, and why I was now being told that I could never have eye surgery. Those are completely reasonable questions for a patient to ask. The seven-hour drive made the situation even more unacceptable. This was not a minor inconvenience. I spent significant time, fuel, and effort traveling based on information provided to me by the department. If there were unresolved medical concerns that could result in permanent disqualification, those concerns should have been addressed before I was told I was approved and instructed to report for surgery. The biggest issue here is not that I was ultimately found to be a poor candidate for surgery. Medical professionals have every right to determine that a procedure is unsafe. The issue is the lack of consistent communication, the apparent change in explanation, the absence of a meaningful solution, and the disrespectful manner in which my questions were handled. I would strongly encourage the LASIK department to reevaluate how it communicates surgical approvals and disqualifications to soldiers. Patients deserve accurate information before traveling significant distances, and they deserve to have major medical decisions explained to them by qualified medical professionals--not dismissed, talked down to, or left without answers
