If you're ever in the area (Avenue U bet E. 18th & 19th St) and looking for good eats stop by this establishment. It's a mom and pop restaurant that has been a fixture in this area for some years. I only order to go since discovering this spot but they do offer indoor seating for meals. Though the wait staff don't speak English well but they take your orders quick and have you on your way unless they're busy at the order window which can happen a lot. Just double check the receipt to make sure the cost of each item matches what they charged. You can also verbally check the prices of each item as you order to avoid incorrect receipt. Food: The food is delicious here! I ordered Three Meats Over Rice - concubine chicken, honey roast pork, and duck. All of the meats were moist and made very well. The meats come over a bed of rice and cabbage. This place is known for their roast meats. You can order the meats by itself or over rice or noodles. Their tofu pudding is also very good, one of the best and smoothest I've had in NYC. Service: The place is run by a bunch of ladies, and all of them are very friendly and attentive. They've recently reopened their indoor dining section so it's a really solid spot for a casual lunch. I came by with my family last Saturday and our only qualm was that service was a bit slow but we later found out that they were understaffed due to another location's grand opening that same day on 8th Ave! All of the dishes that we shared were delicious though none of them particularly stood out. I'd probably recommend the clay pot rice (not sure if you can find this anywhere else on Ave U) and maybe the HK style lo mein. My mom mentioned that they cook their lo mein here a bit differently, with a bit of "wok hay" that you don't typically find elsewhere. And of course as a self-proclaimed steamed rice rolls connoisseur, I thought the rolls here were pretty good but not the best. They were not as fresh & springy as I'd like, but they do the job if you're craving them. I enjoyed the mixed sauce one over the roast pork one. I wish I had tried the tofu pudding/custard but perhaps next time! I did however get the crispy honey roast pork to go for dinner (which seems to be their speciality meat) and thought it was too fatty. I absolutely love this place. Their three meat rice dish is amazing! Their char siu, faw yook, and chicken are all done very well. I also like ordering their tofu pudding (tofu fa). And if you order a vegetable from them, it's a legit vegetable that's boiled to perfection and to the liking of an old taishanese man. The service is nice as well as it's managed by women it seems. You can also call to order in advance to reserve the meats before they close up for the night. I called one hour in advance before I got there and glad I did because there was a long line out the door of people asking for char siu. Double Red specializes in Cantonese roast meats on top of noodles or rice. Food: Basic, but Good (3 of 5). Value: Very Good (4 of 5). The dishes we've had include: - "Honey Roast Pork on Rice" (叉燒飯): Double Red gives a choice of two cuts -- lean or fatty -- and a lot of meat. A lean cut is a littler drier and costs a little more than the fatty cut, but I can eat every lean piece while I tend to eat only parts of fatty pieces. - "Honey Roast Pork Lo Mein" (叉燒撈麵): the "Lo Mein" noodles are plain, but I can understand there are some constraints due to pricing. This dish might be better as take-out, so one may dress up the noodles to preference. - "Honey Roast Pork Steamed Rice Noodle" (叉燒炊米粉): Menu #61. This place opened recently & my family has been raving about the food for a week straight. Skeptical, I went and tried the food myself to provide an honest review. Every food I tried during this meal was some of the best I have had in a long time. The meats I had on top of my soup were extremely fresh and had better flavor than the other Chinese restaurants in the area. The wontons were tender and fresh, reminding me of some I have eaten in Hong Kong. The clay pot rice was a surprise as I didn't think I would be that much of a fan, but I was so wrong. The meats were tender, and the flavor of the mushrooms was amazing as if it were marinated prior. The sauce was delicious, although we felt as if we needed more. The steamed rice noodles weren't our favorite, only because we had other amazing dishes in front of us. We must say it lacked meat, but that's just because we are huge meat eaters and that's what we were looking forward to. The concept of the kitchen being in the front for customers to see us fun and we loved watching the chefs cook our food (especially making the steamed rice rolls.) You can't come to an authentic Asian restaurant and expect top tier service, and that's the truth. There's no comparing this restaurant to American ones where the servers are always attentive, but that's just how the culture is. I love this place! This might be my favorite spot on Avenue U, and even beyond. Their steamed rice noodles are amazing - my favorites are the pork or rosated pork rice rolls, with an egg to top them off. Their soups are fantastic as well. The glutinous rice balls soup is delicious and very comfortable to eat. I haven't seen this dish sold anywhere but here; before this, I was only able to eat it when relatives cooked it. Figure while I was in Brooklyn, my aunt told me this place has pretty good roast duck, pork and chicken. I'll give it a try. I walk in they said the roast pig just came out. There are several areas which the restaurant is lacking. Customer service: No greetings to start with. When I placed the order, I had to call them over a few times before they come to me. Then they forgot one of my order, I had to remind them when they said they were finished. The entire wait time was about 30 minutes for 3 different simple dish. In the mean time while I waited, I saw this middle age lady reached her hand into the rice pot and scooped a handful of rice with gloves on, puts half handful into her mouth to taste, and then throw the rest back. Pricing: The price is clearly indicated on the menu yet when I paid for my order, I was sort if scammed. One of my dish was Hot and Sour noodles, which supposed to come witty soup. The lady who packs the food separated the soup and noodle in two different bowl and had collected me an extra dollar for the service. I was never told about the extra pricing nor asked about how I want my food to be packed. Pricing was more expensive than other similar restaurants in the hood. Food Quality: My order consisted of fresh fish congee, hot and sour noodles soup, and steamed beef rice noodle. Only the fish congee was acceptable for the taste. The hot and sour noodle soup that was recommended by the restaurant was the worse hot and sour noodle soup I've tasted so far in my life. The noodles weren't potato made noodles, they were regular Chinese style vermicelli. And lastly about the steamed beef rice noodle, it is not acceptable because the noodles were very broken at the stage that I could barely use chopstick to pick them up. I've only tried their roasted meats and they have been decently good. It is old school Chinese. I've had their char siu and soy sauce chicken leg and wings. I do prefer the chicken legs, over the wings, as somehow it has a better taste. The owner is friendly but she does try to upsell you. The prices are not too crazy so I am usually open to trying new things and might take the offers. So far the food has been good. Was dying for some noodle on a cold day. So decided to try this restaurant for the first time. The place looks small but not really small. The kitchen is near the bathroom and there people who cut the roast pork and other meat up front. We order a few dishes. Mainly I order was some congee, some bread thing for the congee, wonton soup, Cheng fun with fish all and seafood noodle soup. The order came pretty fast. The only what took a little longer was wonton soup. Cheng fun was ok. The congee was good. The bread is hard but thanks to the congee it make it soft. The seafood noodle was good it had different seafoods from fish, clams and crab meat. The wonton was alright a little undercook. So when was ask for the bill. The lady gave the bill and just stand there to get the bill and money. Which I think it was kind of rude. So after I gave the money to get the change. She gave the change but waited for me to give the tip. So when she had to do something I put the tip on the teapot. She came back and laugh. I was thank goodness I give you a tip if not I would give you nothing. So overall experience the foods was ok. Alright there is some sweet soup for dessert which is ok. Would I come back here. This place just opened and wanted to try it out for the roasted meats and poultry. Got there around lunch time and expected it to be crowded but there were plenty of tables. Waited a few minutes to be seated and no one approached so we just grabbed a table on our own. Then waited around for a waitress to bring the menus and tea but we're ignored and had to flag one down. Again it wasn't busy at the time. So after looking through the menu a were ready to order, we had to wave over a waitress again. So now from the time we walked in to just wanting to order food at least 25 minutes had passed by. Finally got to place our order. We decided to get simple dishes just to try the food, a wonton noodle soup and roast duck/pork over rice. So we waited about 15 minutes for a simple wonton noodle soup to arrive first so I told my friend to start eating. I waited and waited for my roast pork and duck over rice to arrive, my friend had already finished her noodle soup by this point and she's a slow eater. At this time I'm ready to leave. I again had to flag down the waitress to get the bill and told her to cancel my order. They apologized but this was a nightmare. My order is the most simple order that should've been out in no more than 5 minutes but it never made it. This is just about the service. Now about the food that made it to our table, a simple wonton noodle soup....this is the first time I've seen this dish where the broth was cloudy in appearance!? It's not ramen!!! The wontons were just meh and they gave you only four medium sized wontons. The noodles were sub par as they didn't have the firmness that many of the better restaurants serve they also just gave you cheaper cabbage for a vegetable instead of Chinese broccoli. Over all it took almost an hour process to jus end up with a wonton noodle soup that wasn't worth it. You maybe asking why I didn't ask the waitress to check on my order. Here's why, so I can truly see the efficiency and competency of this new restaurant so that this review is untainted. Forgot to mention when we were serve the tea , my cup was dirty and for a new restaurant they looked old and used for awhile. Definitely WON'T be back. read more
