My husband made reservations a week and a half ago for our 28th wedding anniversary. We wanted to do something special, so we chose the Double Eagle. The evening was ruined. We arrived 30 minutes early to have drinks in the beautiful bar and to alert the hostess we were there. The hostess had no record of our reservation. Suggested we wait to be seated in the back room.It took over a 1/2 hour for them to provide a table in the main dining room as we had requested by our reservation. The bar was understaffed and it took 10 minutes for us to be waited on. The bar was littered with dirty dishes and glasses. We had to ask for a drink menu and explain a simple request for one of listed cocktails several times to the waitstaff. 40 minutes after we arrived we were seated next to the service entrance across from a family with several children. My husband had made it clear to the hostess who took our reservations that I am hearing impaired and a table in the quieter area of the main dining room. This was not honored. We requested to change tables before we sat down and this was also met with excuses. My husband asked to speak to the manager who was busy clearing tables and waiting on tables. When he finally came to talk to us, my husband explained the situation. This was met with a laundry list of excuses: short staff, busy, large parties. I responded by stating that customers were not to be penalized for the restaurant's poor staffing management. We were moved to a more quiet table and were assured we would have one of their more experienced wait staff. That was true. She was charming. The food was a huge disapointment. The ossobucco and rice were barely warm. The rolls were either dry and stale. My shrimp scampi which was prepared at the table was generous with the shrimp but ruined by a heavy handed overuse of the white wine. I only ate the shrimp. We did not bother to stay for desert and left hungry, disappointed and our anniversary dinner ruined. We have had better service, better food and more pleasant experiences at the local Cracker Barrel. The Double Eagle is shabby, understaffed, ridiculously overpriced for mediocre service and second rate food. Shockingly overrated. Do not waste your time, money and risk the unpleasant surprise my husband and I experienced at this sad excuse for fine dining. Our anniversary was ruined. read more

I am amused by Yelp reviews that compare a historic one-of-a-kind place like Double Eagle to theme-branded chain restaurants with locations all over the country, which generally crank out the same pre-frozen pablum at every location. I am equally amused at reviews that state they had a great meal and great service but gave a restaurant 1-star because of the price. Do people actually go to a restaurant without looking at the menu online, or when they walk in the door or before they order so they feel compelled to complain AFTER their meal that they can't afford fine dining? Is it not apparent that an elegant location like Double Eagle costs much more money to run than a cookie-cutter fast food place at the local mall? That being said, I loved the place. It is a jewel among jewels in terms of decor, ambience and taste. The service is wonderful and my meal was memorable. One feels ensconced in real history, not something a decorated created as a theme. While the food prices are slightly on the high side, you get what you pay for, and this is one place you should save your pennies for and splurge. Had Thanksgiving Lunch there - no need to eat the rest of the day! Wonderful assortment - needed more vegan options and dairy free. The place is an amazing historic one story adobe-ish(?) building. I like the main court yard even though it is not as elegant as some of the interior dining areas. Love the sun and the sound of the fountain and the plants. Chairs not the best but there it is. The bar area is really cool and there are alcoves from which to watch the large plasma screen sports events. The Bloody Mary with the Chile Vodka is a killer I could only drink 1/5 of the glass it was so hot. I do know some people who would really enjoy that - they shall remain truly name-less at this time. So, let's say you want a delicious margarita with your New Mexican food and don't want to go to La Posta. Lots of options, right? NOPE. This may be New Mexico, but part of our "charm" is a fixed number of liquor licenses. Peppers is pretty much your only choice, and it fits the bill. The food isn't the best in town, but it IS good, and they have some unique choices you won't find other places. They won't look at you like you're crazy if you're a vegetarian. The chile rellenos are pretty consistently good, though the cheese of choice is rather processed... same goes for the chile con queso. Velveeta city. The chips are a bit heavy on the seasoning, but they come out warm and pair well with the unique and slightly chunky salsa. I'll take it. The margaritas are, simply put, worth it. The "award winning" is my go-to, but they have enough variations I'm sure you could find several favorites. And the atmosphere is awesome: they have a lovely sun-lit interior courtyard with a fountain and everything. They can accommodate large groups in side rooms if you call ahead. Sometimes the service is slow, but you don't come here to eat and run. In case you missed it up above, you come here to **drink delicious margaritas**... and oh yeah, have some New Mexican food too. This place seriously lacks in leadership. It is very rare that I give a place a ONE star and I will justify this rating. We walked in and were greeted immediately by a very friendly hostess, so the experience started out well. She helped us decide between the two restaurants they have there. We were seated and the waiter came over. He seemed very nice but very inexperienced. (Again I will explain). He introduced himself and took our drink orders. He came back to the table with the drinks and asked about appetizers. One person with us clearly stated right up front that she is ALLERGIC to Shrimp and RAW Tomatoes. There were 3 of us at the table so you know how many. We did order the Ceviche and coconut shrimp. He brought the appetizers to the table: my wife tried the ceviche and immediately stated that it had vinegar in it. We called the waiter over and my wife asked if there was vinegar. His first response was NO, when she asked if he was sure after a few minutes he finally stated he was not sure but would ask. My wife stated that there should be no reason other then to save money on using Lemon Juice for a place to use vinegar. He finally came back and said yes there was vinegar in it. She stated that she could not eat it and he hemmed and hawed for a few minutes, walked away and then came back and asked if he should take it away to which we said yes that it would not be eaten. He did take it away. We ordered food and again he was told about the allergies the one person in our party had. He later came back with the food and there was guacamole on her plate to which she asked, "is there tomatoes in the guacamole?" He stated yes and she again told him I cannot have tomatoes touching anything on my plate, I will get very sick. He looked very confused and she finally said, just give me a plate and I will get it off myself. There was NEVER an apology. The next issue, we had to ask for refills as they did not come automatic and our drinks sat empty for a long time. I do have to say the food was tasty and prepared as requested. The biggest issue as to why this place is getting the ONE STAR, is because at NO TIME did we ever see a Manager, at NO time was an apology ever given about any issue we had nor was there anyone seen in a leadership position. Like I said, our waiter was very nice, but seemed very confused and a little inexperienced. You would think that a place which charges over $30 for ages steaks would at least run like a place with a staff that strives to be the best. We did not expect anything for free and did not desire anything for free, however, we did expect someone in charge to take FOOD ALLERGIES seriously and show a little compassion and caring to the customer. None was shown here and it could be a communication issue between the staff and the leadership, however, that is not the staffs fault, its the leaderships fault for not setting the standards. Amateur night. Wow, I don't think one thing went right. Except the wine; more on that below. Our (large-ish) family came here two nights before Christmas. My dad had reserved one of the private rooms. They sat us at a table in the middle of the place. When he inquired, both the host and server managed an, "um..... (shrug)?" Fine. We're hungry. This will do. The smell of burnt garlic coming from the kitchen is ominous. The food: terrible. All around. That is, once we got it! About an hour and a half after we ordered, with nary an acknowledgement, unceremoniously, the comically overcooked, flavorless, low-quality stuff began hitting the table. One of the signature dishes was a shoe-leather, dried out chicken breast smothered in some heartburn-inducing sauce, topped with a glop of cheese that tasted like oil. The salmon had every molecule of moisture cooked out of it: like wood. The beef Wellington was tough and chewy in greasy, soggy puff-pastry. In addition to being overcooked, my brother's steak something-or-other arrived stone cold. Here's the kicker. When he mentioned it to the server she argued with him! "Well, that was the last thing cooked!" Perhaps. Then left to sit out on the back porch (in the 30 degree chill) for half an hour or so? In summary: Our reservation: ignored The service: slooooooow (never once mentioned, much less apologized for it) and surly. The food: cooked by amateurs from recipes devised by amateurs using government-surplus ingredients. Topped with an argument from the server. No acknowledgement that the food took an hour and a half, that some was cold, some overcooked. No offer to compensate for any of it. Oh, my brother ordered a couple bottles of Caymus. That part was good. And probably the only thing that kept us all from tearing the chandeliers out of the ceiling. I really don't know why anyone would go here. Ever. read more

The do a very nice Christmas buffet. The spread includes main dishes like lobster ravioli, fried chicken, champagne poached salmon, tamales, roast beef, blintzes and much more. And what better way to finish off the meal with a chocolate fountain! The restaurant itself is beautiful, with gold-plated ceilings in one room, and a sort of patio/wintergarten in another. This place is really nice inside and definitely has a unique feel. We ate in the plantation room I think it is called? It was sunny from the skylight windows and I liked all the plants everywhere. All the furniture is nice and handmade down the street and is pretty expensive stuff. My boyfriend's parents told us about a time they ate in the old dining room and that it is haunted. Everyone's cell phones supposedly lost over half their charge. The food and service are honestly meh. Not bad, but not great. I got the brisket green chili enchiladas and they came to the table lukewarm... Pet peeve of mine... The green chili could have been spicier and I felt like the enchiladas over all just didn't have enough flavor for what they were. The enchiladas came with beans and rice, which were just alright not great... Yet again... Ha. We got the banana enchilada for desert. It was just gross and slimy and cold. Boyfriend and his dad got the key lime pie with homemade sorbet which was good! Probably my favorite part of the meal to be honest besides the chips and salsa which were yummy! We were introduced to Peppers on the Plaza with a gift certificate from our daughter. The certificate was good for Peppers (patio area) or the Double Eagle (restaurant area). The atmosphere and the historic significance of this location makes either dining experience a real treat. The food is good, which is must for a good rating. read more

Double Eagle is Peppers Café during the day. This fact should already be an indication of some odd things to what is a historic restaurant that markets itself as an elegant dining experience. Many people have mentioned the décor inside. While Double Eagle has some elegance, it was a bit much to me. I enjoyed a drink in the bar area, and while nice, there was simply too much going on. The walls were cluttered with art and with the combination of a chandelier hanging from the ceiling and the bar area, it made me feel more claustrophobic and trapped than welcoming. If you are a fan of Renaissance era breasts, then you will enjoy the artwork as there are plenty of those to go around. I can't address the Double Eagle's menu as I ate at Peppers at 3 pm on a Wednesday. The existence of Peppers is odd to me. After entering the Double Eagle bar, you then enter Peppers, which is such a dramatic change in look. You go from a dark historic feel to an area filled with plants and bright colors. It was like going from the Wild West to the Amazon. I expected a parrot to fly at me. There are many menu options at Peppers, and with the combination of the strange décor shift and my experience watching way too many episodes of "Kitchen Nightmares," I was pretty concerned. I decided to order the seafood stuffed green chiles (can't recall the exact name but it's something in that realm). Now, I realize that New Mexico is not known for its seafood, so my expectations were not particularly high, but I just wanted a change of flavor from what I had been consistently eating during the week I was there. The seafood stuffed green chiles were terrible. The chiles were deep fried and not particularly impressive. More disheartening was that the "seafood" was clearly just a canned seafood mix that the chef chose to heat and then pour over the deep fried green chiles. They were not stuffed into them nor would anyone like a seafood-type cole slaw to be heated. I encouraged my friend eating with me to try a bite as well, and she also found it unappealing. I asked for a double side of Mexican rice, and it was just a mashed-up glob with little flavor. This wouldn't matter so much to me if it wasn't for the price: $13. This is an abnormally high price for a lunch and unacceptable when the food simply does not come remotely close to delivering in taste. Additionally, I had recently been to Andele's, which is just a few blocks away, and for $5 cheaper, I got hefty portions of excellent Mexican food with rice that simply blew away what Peppers has to offer. I'm not the type of person to return a meal to the kitchen. I've never done it before. But, in hindsight, I probably should have. I'm writing this review in the hope that the seafood stuffed green chiles gets removed off the menu or modified to something actually reflecting a quality $13 dish. I just felt bad returning it. But, I also know telling the server would not lead to any changes nor would the comment card (which weirdly asked for my phone number) that came along with my check be sufficient. I'm really on a crusade to get the seafood stuffed green chiles dish removed. Please remove it! Don't eat it, fellow Yelpers! Given my friend's dish and the general feel that I'm getting from other Yelpers, the food here at Peppers is standard or worse and certainly not worth the price. This restaurant is charging high purely based off its tourist element and environment, which they believe to be elegant, but which I believe to be kind of bipolar in the type of reaction you feel towards it. Adding to this bizarre environment is that they chose to have background music. I suppose that could be all right even in what is described as an elegant restaurant, but their music choices were all over the place and did not match the feel of the dining experience. From Taylor Swift to Semisonic to Daughtry to Ke$ha. What is going on here?! This music doesn't even work together if I was at a bar getting drunk let alone at a pricy, historic, and somewhat posh restaurant. I can only assume they picked the Pandora station, "Complete Crap of Today" for their patrons to enjoy. I at least gave Peppers two stars for two reasons. First, the server and bartender were both nice. They seemed to genuinely care that we had a good experience. Also, we got Bloody Marys, and these were delicious. The vodka is infused with green chiles (don't worry - no seafood in them luckily!), and tasted great. So, when it comes down to it, Peppers/Double Eagle is a nice place to just have a relaxed drink, look at older art of naked women and guys with beards, and walk around a bit to look at a bunch of different rooms that don't really match up. Other than that, if you want some delicious food at a reasonable price, I'd suggest Andele's or if you want a more elegant experience, some of the area wineries should suit you. In conclusion, please get rid of the seafood stuffed green chiles! read more

My wife and I visited the Double Eagle restaurant for a Sunday brunch and found that the experience was fantastic. The price was reasonable ($55 for two) and the food was delicious. There was a nice variety of Boucherie, fruits, made to order omelets , carver, entrée items, and dessert options. The mimosas we included and plenty though the -1 star was simply because the the mimosas were average. I'm a week late posting this, but I still cannot forget what an incredible meal my mother and I had at DE last week. Stephanie was our server and she was superb! Her table side Caesar was the perfect starter, balanced between simply delectable bite for bite, and light enough to give way to the next course. The filet mignon we each ordered was cooked exactly as individually requested. We had the mashed potatoes and chile relleno, respectively, but both added the broiled bleu cheese and mushrooms. If you are looking to splurge, this is THE way to go. Who knew rellenos are such a natural compliment to steak?! We finished with Bananas Foster. What a finale. Cruces pecans are gigantic, and the crispy-sweet bananas were heavenly on their own. I know I will remember this meal for years to come, and will certainly be back for more! read more

My husband ordered brisket. It was so bad (just looking at it) there was no way he was going to eat it. It was a weird color and full of fat with some kind of weird sauce. I ordered the chicken breast with peppers and onions. It was ok, but would not order it again. The beans and rice were blah, not much flavor. Waitress seemed to be bothered by having to wait on us. Very disappointing. Very expensive for what we received. Even the margarita was "ok" but very small for $12 and couldn't really taste the tequilla. We won't be back. Ok. Here it goes: first of all my cucumber Bloody Mary was excellent. The Aspen coffee was fantastic. They should consider hiring a chef with the same standards as the bartender. Server was good. Leaves on the salad were too big. The spicy-ness of the green chile mac n cheese overpowered the dish. Leaving it to be a spicy-mess. The duck confit did NOT taste confit. In my opinion, duck confit meat should fall of the bone. This particular duck, although having good flavors, had to be pulled and torn of the bone. My "cooked" carrots were crunchy. The flatware was cheap looking and scratched. The table cloths had major creases. My ahi tuna was under seasoned and didn't pair well with the wanton crackers/ guacamole. So I know I'm being picky, but when I spend $95 for 2, I expect to be wowed. I think we'll go to Chili's next time. read more

The sign at the door claims, "The World's Largest Green Chile Cheeseburger". Weighing in at 1.25 lbs, plus a really, really big, dense bun, queso, green chiles, and pico de gallo, the claim may be accurate. For $22, its a toss up between splitting this with a friend or ordering two of the 1/2 lb "mini" green chile cheeseburgers ($10). Either way you go, you will be impressed with the quality of the beef. It's pure perfection and it alone is well worth the trip. In my view, it about quality, not quantity--but there's plenty of both in this, the BEST green chile burger! Served with onion, tomato, and pickle on the side. A cold Miller Lite and a Double Eagle green chile burger on a Sunday afternoon...doesn't get better than this. read more

This is one of my favorite places for fine dining in LC and in a class of it's own complete with local folklore and even a ghost. The steak I had was very good cooked rare with a la carte fresh veggies and red skinned potatoes. Full bar with lots of excellent tequilas. The waitstaff is attentive and obviously working for that big tip that they deserve. Not good on the wallet for daily dining but for special occasions The Eagle cannot be beaten. read more

We came for Christmas eve dinner. I'll try to be brief: The Bad: 1. Did not have our reservation written down. 2. Subsequently we were seated in the un-heated back room. 3. Had to ask for the complementary bread. 4. The side dishes came out cold to luke warm. When they brought out more, they were the same temperature. 5. The "seasonal vegetables" were composed of frozen green beans. 6. Sauces were served with no instruction as to which dish they accompanied. 7. The New Mexican Apple Strudel was definitely sub-par with little flavor. 8. When the bill arrived, they tried to double-charge for a dish that on the menu stated "For two" not "per person" (Chateaubriand-definitely not worth $50/2 people, much less the $50/person that they tried to charge). They were reluctant to bring out the manager, and when he arrived he dealt with us with much sarcasm and attitude. Also notable: The previous day I ate at Peppers for lunch and my side of "boracho beans" was delivered cold. Only two bathroom stalls for a large restaurant and bar. The good: Beautiful building, with a classy atmosphere. Overall: Wildly overpriced food for the quality and service. Even the nice atmosphere is not enough to redeem this restaurant from bland, poor quality, cold food. I would not recommend. read more

After recently moving to the area I am pleased to have found this establishment. We tend to go to Double-Eagle about once a week but this review is for Pepper's which we have dined at on the few occasions when we haven't eaten at the bar. We received an e-mail about a special - prime rib sandwiches. The e-mail set off our taste buds so we went to try them. The restaurant was quite packed but we were seated promptly. Our waiter greeted us and brought out homemade chips and salsa. The chips were hot and crisp and the salsa has just enough spice from the jalapeños. We had to stop ourselves from eating them all. The prime rib sandwiches were hot, with nicely shaved prime rib. We added cheese to ours which was melted and topped with coleslaw. They were served with a red pepper au jus which had a hint of spice and was a nice addition to tie all the favors together. My only complaint are the French fries, although they were hot and crisp they leave you wanting a little something more be it garlic or an aioli. All in all it was another great experience and I look forward to coming back next week. read more

From the street, you would think this is just another hole in the wall. The signage and entrance are modest. You walk in to find a full patio that seats around 120+ people (which is the Peppers Cafe portion of the restaurant), a few beautifully decorated private rooms, a lounge area with antique sofas and tables, and an old-fashioned bar area. The place was packed at lunch time. We were going to order a couple of sandwiches but our server warned us that the appetizer that we ordered (the Primo Nachos topped with Chicken, Beef, Guacamole, and Sour Cream) might be enough to fill us up for lunch. He wasn't kidding. Imagine a medium to large sized pizza tray at your favorite pizza resturant...then imagine it piled with nachos about 4 inches high. We got our money's worth and it was delicious! He was right. We were full after the nachos but we had to try their dessert. We ordered the Banana Enchiladas....a crepe filed with bananas topped with ice cream, pecans, and syrup....yummmmy! We know now that this is a local favorite and a great stop for tourists...we highly recommend it! Be sure to check out the menu on their website...they have some pretty original items. read more

Stopped here for a late lunch on the way to El Paso. The bean/chorizo dip was delicious and came with a plate of chips for dipping. I ordered a side of corn tortillas to cut down on calories of fried chips. The chili burger was good although it was surprisingly bland. The downside was the very slow service by our specific waitress. The other tables seemed to be getting much better response. Each request (mustard,ketchup, refreshed tea) meant a delay of 10 minutes before we saw the server return. My husband finally grabbed condiments off another table. Some special visitors were in town, some friends in the know had told me that the restaurant was really taking the health and safety thing very seriously AND I had been craving a DE Green Chile Cheeseburger for weeks. So we went tonight and it was fabulous. All distancing and practices in full force, so I was able to relax into it and we had a great meal and experience. We had early dinner at this restaurant the 31st of December and had an ok experience while in the restaurant, the food was good but there was a problem with one of the entrees (which arrived 15 minutes after everything else) however we were offered a free dessert so we were happy with the experience. The real problem started when it was time to pay, the bill was split in two and after paying and thinking everything was ok we attempted to leave only to be chased by our waiter asking for another card since there appeared to be an issue with one of the cards we used to pay, this was a little odd but we thought nothing of it and payed with a credit card instead. Today we noticed that there were several charges amounting to $400 dollars in the card that was "declined" a $115 charge in the credit card (which is the right amount) and two different charges one of $175 and another one of $150 in the other card used to pay (only one of these charges was the correct amount). After calling back and forth between the restaurant and our bank all morning we will be refunded (thanks to the bank not the restaurant), we are not happy at all with the costumer service of the double eagle,this is not a cheap restaurant we spent close to $300 dollars there, the least they can do is provide good costumer service. I will not eat here again and I suggest that if you do you make sure that you are being charged the correct amount and no additional charges are added to your card. read more

Seductive but comes up short. Compare this to the strikingly beautiful or handsome date you've been set up with, but when they talk, well, it's one major disappointment. Despite the sparking chandeliers, antique furnishings, beaux arts paintings of languid naked women, and 24 karat gold ceilings, the Double Eagle/Peppers falls short when it comes to cuisine. This could be any other steak house, were it not for the decor, which is beautiful and momentarily distracts you from the fact that while the pricey steak is fine, the side dishes are pallid. One wonders if the chef has lost interest in cuisine all together. This is dull food in a decked out building. Eating at the Double Eagle/Peppers is like being on a date you know isn't worth the expense! The Double Eagle is in need of an owner and management who is interested in food, and not just relying on its interior decorations and charm, as the main draw. read more

This place is always a treat. Our waiter was courteous and the staff was prompt. The food was very good as always but just expected a step above - steaks were great don't get me wrong! The ambiance and history in this building always find something new when exploring. read more

If could I would put put ZERO stars I went there on 09/05/21. We reserved the Carlotta room at rate of $25.00 extra. The hostess gave our reserved room to another party and even the Manager advised the hostess that she gave the room to the wrong party. We wanted to talk to the Manager , mean while the hostess was getting new customers involved in the altercation. it was the worst experience as a returning customer to the Double Eagle. read more
