Double Eagle is a decent restaurant. I say decent because although it's considered fine dining, and you can certainly expect to pay $100 + for two people, the menu is rather unimaginative and doesn't change much. I would certainly recommend the escargot as a starter, and the steak isn't bad, but the general ambience and food feels like it's catering more to the 50 year old + sort of clientele. The bar, however, is absolutely phenomenal; they make a damn good aviation. Nicest server hands down is Esperanza (Espie), who is the sweetest person we've met in Cruces. read more

Called on 12/1 and made reservations in Double Eagle for my wife's birthday on 12/7 At 5:30 pm. We arrived just before 5 pm to have drinks in the bar before seating for dinner. At 520 I let the hostess k ow we were there and I noticed my name was not on the reservation list. I was instructed it would be several minutes. We lost our seats in the bar so we stood around for almost 20 minutes until I was fed up and we left and went to La Posta. This is not the first time this has happened. In the last 4 years there have been 3 times where reservation was messed up and 2 time where the meal was served cold. I have been a customer of yours for 30 years and you are suppose to be a premier steak restaurant in this part of the state. WTH to you? We always dependEd on you for special occasions but you have let me down for the last time. If and I mean if I ever come to your establishment again I'll make a point to call the day before and make sure that I really have a reservation Right now your only saving grace is your bar staff. Excellent. I always order calamari for an appetizer as a gauge of food quality. Double Eagle calamari was cooked perfect! The meal that followed almost equaled the calamari with two complaints. First, the prime rib was tough. Not sure it was prime rib. But it was flavorful. Now the major issue. THE MUSIC WAS UNTENABLE. An obnoxiously loud, shrilly tooting sax is unromantic, distracting, jittery, and basically lousy to eat with. Even in New Orleans. Great food menu. Lousy music menu! Music certainly is not a fit for Mesilla's or Double Eagle's (I think) intended ambience. An easy fix. read more

If you plan on going to this restaurant for a special occasion, be aware that they may not honor your reservation. We had reservations well in advance. We arrived for our anniversary dinner. They walked us over to Peppers. We were surprised and told that our reservation was canceled due to a wedding going on in the Double Eagle. What?! No telephone call to warn us. Nothing! It was our anniversary and we wanted the ambiance and unique setting of The Double Eagle. Peppers is a casual everyday restaurant. Special celebrations only happen once in a while. Thanks for not thinking about your customers in advance. A telephone call in advance would have been appreciated. Total disregard. Sad! Fantastic place in a perfect location in Las Cruces! My girlfriend and I where is visiting from New York and truly loved the vibe. Unfortunately we weren't able to seat inside due to Covid, but it was beautiful in there! Food was great and even better was the staff. There was a bit of a wait, but the manager was so welcoming and helpful in getting us a spot as soon as possible. The cherry on top of the experience was that I forgot my credit card there and the manager was willing to send it all the way to New York! This restaurant reminds me of the inside of the Haunted Mansion where the ghosts dance around and over the long dining table. I think the restaurant is overpriced for food quality but it appears to be one of the 'nicest' in the area by means of some sort of ambiance. It's very dimly lit inside (leaning towards dark..dancing ghosts!) which makes it a great place for a quiet or romantic date night. Esp since all the restaurants in the area are brightly lit without any sort of ambiance. I had the Scampi and the serving of them was impressive! The waiter did a flambe at our table. The shrimp (which were more like prawns) were good size but a little tough for $37. The sides were 'meh'. My friends/family enjoyed their dishes but weren't 'wowed' by them either. We went back one Sunday for brunch and it was disappointing. The long line for the one person making omelets meant the other food on our plate got cold before we got our omelet. They REALLY need more than one person making custom omelets. Service was 'meh'. I had dropped my fork and after waiting what seemed like 10-minutes (but likely was less) without seeing a server, I went and took a set off another table. Took a long time for refills, water, etc. and from all appearances, the servers weren't that busy as they seemed to have time to chat in the alcoves. Wasn't a fan of kids in the buffet area unsupervised sticking their fingers in the desserts but that's not the restaurants fault. Or maybe it is? Perhaps having someone in the area to watch over and guide kids back to their parents would be helpful. *In my original review I said there was nothing special about their meat. I am so happy to learn it is local, hormone free, organic, humanely raised, etc. Farm to table is easily worth the price! So perhaps I'll give this place another go & next time, I'll have the meat! read more

What a gem!!!! Peppers Cafe in the Double Eagle Resturant is a delight!! Tucked away in Historic Old Mesilla on the Plaza, you wouldn't guess there's an amazing oasis inside! Our server, Audri was so nice and helpful. Food was excellent. The ambiance was so relaxing. Fountain in the patio with live plants added to the relaxing lunch. I like this restaurant because of its history. The decoration is amazing and you feel transported to the past. The food is good, I ordered the relleno burger and it was really good. The Chile relleno with the Chile con queso on top was amazing! The only thing I won't be ordering again is the Mango n Chile Margarita. This review is for Peppers, the restaurant within Double Eagle that's open for lunch. What a treat! Came here with my husband for a nice lunch and wasn't disappointed. The ambience of the bar and building was fantastic and we were seated in the patio area of the building next to an indoor fountain. The chairs were a bit rickety, but we didn't mind. We ordered drinks to start; I had the pickle juice Bloody Mary and my husband ordered a Bloody Mary made with tequila. Both were fabulous. Our waitress was so freakin' nice! I'm not sure why folks are complaining about the service here, but we had no trouble. I ordered the Prime Rib Cheesesteak and it was delicious. It came with a green chile and queso and was so big I had to eat it with a fork. I would definitely recommend this place for a leisurely lunch followed by a walk around the plaza. read more

TLDR: 1.Beautiful old west decor. 2.Great Service 3. Food is disappointing, sub-par, and the steak I had was an expensive flop. While in town for work several locals told me that the Double Eagle was a must go place for dinner while in town, and had stories of delicious aged beef and fine dining. When I asked how often they ate there, the answer was always, "oh, it has been a long time, but it's great!". So, I came here on my last night in town, after not eating all day, and was starving. I wanted very much to love this place, and was impressed by the old west high-class decor when I was seated. My server was very professional and friendly, and was very knowledgeable about the menu. After talking about appetizers, she suggested the wontons, and also suggested the New York strip. She told me that the restaurant had been voted as having the best steak in New Mexico more than once, so I settled on the strip. The wontons came to the table, and they were more related to pizza pockets than something I would expect that cost that much. They were warm, but not hot, and I had the strong suspicion that they had just come out of the microwave, since the dough was very chewy. No big deal I thought, I have an aged steak coming that will surely blow my mind and it would be worth it. Finally, after about half an hour wait for a medium rare steak, it arrived. The steak came with a baked potato, and a plate of toppings. I started on the potato, and it was cold. not even warm enough to melt the butter. And, it was as plain as could be. Just a potato that had been baked, who knows when. No salt on the skin, nothing. Very bland and plain. I was also given two rolls in a basket with butter. The rolls were still connected together, no joke, because they came from a bag from the grocery store. Not baked in-house, not even bought frozen. They were rolls from a package of 12 that were all connected together that were pulled out of a bag and put in a basket. And on top of that, they were stale. Not a little stale. The skin was tough and the insides tougher. And the steak. The steak, that I had been looking forward to for so long, was terrible. It was barely warm, but had been cooked correctly. But it was tough and bland. After three or four bites, I was incredibly disappointed. Tough chewy meat, that tasted like it had been boiled instead of cooked on a grill. No amount of imagination or hope could change the fact as I continued to eat, this steak was a loser in a big way. All of this cost me almost 90 bucks. Insult to injury. If I ever find myself back in Las Cruces, and I hope I do, it is a beautiful, friendly city, I will save my money and avoid the Double Eagle. read more

Horrible. The only thing that makes this place worthy of a visit is the décor. The whole restaurant / kitchen is filthy! You would never eat another plate of food from this place if you saw the behavior in the kitchen, the unhappiness of the staff and the utter arrogance of the family who owns the place , along with their prized management and favorite employees. Employees eat from the salad bar prep in the kitchen , grab chips bare handed from the chip warmer. The dish pit is always pilled high with dishes filled with un eaten food. The silverware comes back with food smashed into it still. The cups have greasy lip prints on them , and simply just get wiped off. I wouldn't be surprised if you told me COVID started here. The manager of the restaurant is a nice guy, however the arrogance and air to him , having this family restaurant is the epitome of a spoiled child given everything and never knowing what true work ethic and quality of a manager should be. The owner of the whole place.. oh man! The way he speaks to his staff, is horrendous. If some of the hostess' mothers knew how they were spoken to at this " fine dining" establishment, they would be livid. The staff is often led to tears in one of their overly dressed dusty dining rooms. There is an elementary school level power play between the two restaurants, with management showing complete favoritism towards one side of the staff. They are miserably underpaid and treated like the lowest of low. I don't know who made this family feel entitled to treat people the way they do , i don't care how long you've had this dump or how many racing horses you have, nobody should be treated that way, especially with a dirty restaurant with cheap overpriced food. Clean the place, get the old man outta there , fire your son and let someone else run that place. Sure, your marguerites are great, but the soulless, horrible humans making them steal a little of your own humanity with each sip. This place needs a reality show. Cause its a SHIT SHOW. read more

Unfortunately, this is one of the most overpriced and average restaurants in town. Food: 2.5 Interior/History of Location: 4.5 Staff: 3 Wine List: 3.5 Prices: 2 Let me start by saying the place has a great history and story. The inside is worth seeing. The wine list is descent and having a single drink at the bar is probably your best bet on visiting this historic location. The food was terrible. The steak was one of the worst I have had and the price was ridiculous. I asked the server to bring me the best they had, and I was very disappointed. If you are looking for a good steak, go to Outback Steakhouse and get the Victoria's Fillet - half the price and twice as good. You can also go to Cattle Baron...which is excellent. read more

We have eaten here each time we're in town and always enjoyed it. The food was still very high quality BUT... Unfortunately, I'm going to leave a bad review. We got there at 11:46 today, wait staff did not bring drinks promptly, nor did they refill without being flagged down. 1 round of salsa and chips, never offered more while waiting. After we ordered food we waited over an hour and then....when everyone else was served, we were informed 1 of the people's food was not available and that person had to reorder but it would be made "on the fly" (another 30 minute wait!) when the staff finally brought out that food we had to ask for a TO GO container and had to wait for that also! I am aware COVID hurt this industry, but REALLY! If this had been my 1st time at Double Eagle, it definitely would be my LAST! Whoa. This place knocked my socks off. Well, okay, maybe it was the two margaritas, but even so this place is jaw-droppingly good. The décor rivals some of the finest restaurants in Paris, and for those reviewers who are grousing about the price, perhaps you've been dining in El Paso for too long, because as an Angeleno on vacation, this place was imminently reasonable. Especially considering I had the second best meal of my two week, seven state vacation. The best meal was Antoine's in New Orleans, so that gives you an idea of how amazing this place is. The chile rellenos were absolute perfection. They're different than we get in Los Angeles: no egg in the batter, and a smaller variety of chile makes for a crispier concoction. I'm a chile relleno aficionado, and these rival any I have had anywhere. (Sorry Abuelita!). Service was particularly attentive and friendly. Staying in El Paso? Worth the drive. On your way to Tuscon? Worth the stop. The definition of a hidden gem, unless you happen to live in Mesilla, and then, well, I guess it's not so hidden. An unqualified five stars. read more

Even the glass of water for our DD took 15 minutes. I won't come back. Horrible experience. I had heard great things about Double Eagle and when I was invited with a group to have sunday brunch there I jumped at the opportunity. First off, the atmosphere is amazing. The rooms, portraits, décor is all spectacular. Each room is different from the next. Its got one of the most beautiful bars I've seen. Truly, you walk in thinking you are gonna see one thing and its like entering one of those magic harry potter rooms where you have to look behind you to make sure you are seeing correctly (yep, used a harry potter reference. Been waiting for that moment). Ok all that being said, for 30 bucks you get the sunday buffet with limitless mimosas. This is a solid value for a high end buffet. You may be wondering why only 3 stars. Well, because while there is a lot to like, I was fairly underwhelmed with the food options. The day we went there was a lot of green chili, which I love, but I noticed my table was sticking to a couple areas (green chili enchilidas, green chili alfredo pasta, etc). I just didn't think the range of eye popping options was there. They did have an omelette station that I would try in the future and the dessert options were fantastic (really good cheese cake and blueberry tarts). Wow! So good. First off I had a green chile martini - from vodka steeped in green chiles. Very elegant bar too - had an old money feeling and everything was over the top as far as chandeliers and paintings. Then on to dinner - we had the Chateaubriand (sp?) for 2 and it was definitely worth the wait. It was a 12oz cut of the best, most tender beef tenderloin EVER. I don't eat a lot of meat, but this was so good it would make a vegetarian change their mind. The waiter was very helpful and suggested a great wine from their list of about a million wines. Food is good when there isn't glass in it. Last time I ate there I took two bites of my meal and crunched down onto a big chunk of glass in my enchilada and wasn't sure whether I swallowed any. The server did remove the meal I didn't eat from our bill but no manager checked to make sure I was OK and nothing else was done to make the situation right--not even a discount on the bill. I felt sick to my stomach for two days thinking about glass making it's way through my intestines--almost certainly imagined but still.... Mistakes happen, but glass in the food is a pretty big screw up and nothing was done to make it right. I don't care how good the food is I can't in good consciousness recommend them. read more

I am amused by Yelp reviews that compare a historic one-of-a-kind place like Double Eagle to theme-branded chain restaurants with locations all over the country, which generally crank out the same pre-frozen pablum at every location. I am equally amused at reviews that state they had a great meal and great service but gave a restaurant 1-star because of the price. Do people actually go to a restaurant without looking at the menu online, or when they walk in the door or before they order so they feel compelled to complain AFTER their meal that they can't afford fine dining? Is it not apparent that an elegant location like Double Eagle costs much more money to run than a cookie-cutter fast food place at the local mall? That being said, I loved the place. It is a jewel among jewels in terms of decor, ambience and taste. The service is wonderful and my meal was memorable. One feels ensconced in real history, not something a decorated created as a theme. While the food prices are slightly on the high side, you get what you pay for, and this is one place you should save your pennies for and splurge. I did not see one thing on the menu that I considered "over-priced". I have no negatives. As my rating indicates, Yay, I am a fan. read more
