The first time I had Dots was about two weeks ago at a BBQ. I saw two boxes of Dots cupcakes sitting on the table and couldn't get my mind off it so when I was offered one, I ended up taking two. I had the vanilla^2 cupcakes since I love vanilla and definitely prefer it over chocolate any day of the week. I really liked it and thought the frosting was sooo good. Sorry, but since I've never tried Sprinkles or any other gourmet cupcake shops I had nothing to compare it to. All I could compare it to were homemade cupcakes from the box.
So after that experience I decided to "Like" Dots Cupcakes on Facebook. A few days ago, Dots Cupcakes announced on Facebook that it would have a Happy Hour on this past Friday and Saturday, 7/9 and 7/10 from 9:00- 10:00 PM at the Fair Oaks location. I was pretty excited despite the rather late and inconvenient time. So I went yesterday with my bf, his brother, and brother's gf.
The shop itself is miniscule. You can imagine how small it is if you feel like there is no moving room with two parties ahead of you. When it was my turn to pick out the cupcakes I asked the worker if it was buy one get one free. She seemed so taken aback that I knew this and asked how I heard about this. We told her Facebook. I didn't know it would be such a secret and everything would seem so hush hush. Um, at normal stores a Happy Hour should be public knowledge. So when she gave the cupcakes to the clerk (a chubby Caucasian girl with glasses) to ring up she told her it was the "special" or whatever words she used. The clerk then asked her how we knew about it and she told her Facebook. Wow, it's like we needed security clearance just to purchase some measly cupcakes when on Facebook it made it seem like you could just waltz in, select your cupcakes, and be charged two for one no questions asked.
Then when it was time for my bf's brother to pay the clerk unleashed her nasty side. He got two regular sized cupcakes, which cost $2.75 each and two minis, which cost $1.50 each. Instead of charging them for one regular cupcake and one mini, that broad charged them for two regular cupcakes. They asked if they could change it and get all regular cupcakes since they were paying the same price and the clerk snarkily told them "it's too late now." How the hell is it too late? The cupcakes never transferred hands.
With that said, this place has no redeeming qualities except for the bench that you can sit on to enjoy your cupcakes. That is if you don't mind the workers looking at you and giving you weird looks. Other than that, this place pretty much sucks. I was hoping it would be great since it's close by. I mean $2.75 for one cupcake is pretty expensive but I wouldn't have minded if the experience made up for it. Now thinking back to the BBQ, whoever brought those cupcakes paid $70+ for two dozen. I would rather pay $5 for some Pillsbury ones and spend the time making it at home even if it is more time consuming. It's much better than dealing with bitter shop girls. read more
