Came to this kind of small place for sushi in Des Plaines downtown. Dotombori is one of the long time favorite around here. It's another one of those sushi restaurants that closes between lunch and dinner and has a few cheaper lunch specials. Has only a few tables inside. There's also seating at the counter where you can watch them make rolls. Anyone who wants something besides sushi can also find something to get. It has a pretty surprisingly big menu. There's a list of cocktails including many made with sake. Last time here at lunch it wasn't that busy. This place is pretty small so if there's only a few people in here it will seem busy though. For lunch we got the Rolls Combo. It's about $13 for a choice of two rolls. The Cucumber And Avocado is the only one we know of with no meat or seafood. Even so, it has good flavor. This may be kind of small, which is the other bad thing Has a good variety for those not wanting just sushi but also other Asian cuisine. It also has ramen and other noodles. The prices are pretty good on most things, and if you're bringing a big group it's good to call ahead because room is limited but there's usually been no problems getting enough seats or whatever.

Can here for some happy hour before my flight and I can say they did not disappoint, their prices were very cheap compared to the amount of food you're getting. Everything was served fresh and servers were quick and attentive.

We returned here for the first time in 5 years and had a very enjoyable and delicious lunch stop. They still have good value lunch specials and that is what we returned for. The wife had their chicken katsu bento box for $14.95 and I had their bulgogi bento box for the same price. We shared selected favorite portions with our older grand-darling. She devoured a couple of shrimp tempura, green bean and pumpkin tempuras, and a portion of both of our main proteins. Our young Korean lady server was friendly and attentive and also proactive, bringing out a small plate for our young lunch mate. We all left happy and satisfied. I pass by this convenient corner restaurant often and we also often consider visiting and it was finally timely on this particular Friday. In fact, our last outing was with this same threesome but they had a somewhat darker decor back then. I chatted with the Korean owner Stella who has been there 15 years now and I was very happy for her that she and the business survived the awful Covid era. I learned that the place was remodeled just a year ago and is now bright and inviting with more colorful Asian decor. Business has also picked up with the reopening of the renovated Des Plaines Theatre just right at the other end of the same block, and yaay on both counts. There's usually easy street parking right out front, but also a free garage a block away. We'll most certainly be back to support this local business!

Where do I start. Id like to go back even tomorrow if my schedule allowed it. They were able to accommodate a party of 8 quickly! The service was impeccable! The food was so delicious I forgot to take more pictures! The owner and the waitress were both so friendly. They were able to accommodate our kids and their meals to be served first and quickly since they were hangry. They even provided kid friendly plates and utensils. I truly appreciated this type of customer service. You really can't go wrong with any of their dishes. We tried their lunch specials along with other rolls and dishes on their regular menu. We loved their spicy tuna appetizer with house made chips! The salmon and hamachi Kama were both cooked so perfectly. The best fish I've had in a long time. Both were delicious, flakey and juicy. I'd definitely order both of these again! We also got three different rolls which were all delicious! One came out and was set on fire to heat up in the wrapped foil. What an experience! Definitely one of the best sushi restaurants in terms of quality of the rolls and fish served with amazing customer service! Look at the cuts of fish in my pictures! Came here for the first time with my friends a couple of months ago and we really liked how authentic everything was. We have great service and we loved our food. I ordered a kamikaze roll (Spicy tuna, cucumber topped with tuna and spicy sauce), spicy tuna maki, and spicy salmon maki, and each were very flavorful and fresh. My friends and I came here for dinner, but I would definitely come back here for lunch, as well, because the lunch specials look very good. Honestly, the prices for everything are reasonable, especially for the quality of the fish and the other ingredients. One thing we didn't really like was the things they consider to be like crab rangoons called "Soft shell crab". They were not what I was expecting at all, and they basically looked like arancini balls in the Italian cuisine, but instead had crab meat and cream cheese inside. Nobody I went with was a fan, but maybe it's because it was not what we were expecting or what we had a taste for since we love crab rangoons, breading and all. We all also ordered a couple of mochi, and the green tea one was delicious. Next time I want to try the coffee one because I never had coffee mochi. The mochi is also cut in fours with cute little umbrella toothpicks attached. Cute aesthetic. The restaurant itself is pretty small and intimate, and we were sat towards the back of the restaurant on the other side of a room divider. Each table is divided by a small divider, but we were separated with a very tall one (taller than the others) so that made us a little uncomfortable, especially since the place wasn't busy when we came. Overall, I would come here again, especially since one of my friends lives down the street from here, but it's not my first choice.

I came here with a friend on a Monday around 5:30pm. I highly suggest making a reservation though because the place got really busy both with dine-in customers, as well as take out. The place is small but it was neat and I liked the simple decorations. The wonderful herb teas we ordered were served in beautiful tea cups. We ordered off of the Happy Hour Menu since we got there before 6pm. We tried the SOFT SHELL CRAB and AGESHI TOFU for our appetizers. I liked both of the dishes although I found the soft shell crab to be a tad salty. The OH MY GOD and LAS VEGAS ROLLS were both delicious. For dessert, we shared an order (one order came with two pieces) of MANGO MOCHI. Mochi never disappoints me:) Overall, I liked the dishes that I have tried here. The service was friendly and efficient. I would definitely come back if I am in the Des Plaines area. Til next time!

We moved from Gold Coast, we love food and we know good food and we know good sushi. We've been coming here for a while. The past three months they change the menu and it is seriously blowing us away. We used to go into Park Ridge for our sushi, but we are so happy here and the food is actually a little bit better. This chef they have hired, or maybe he is the owner, the menu has changed. The food, it is so artistic and different and is just phenomenal. I am so happy because now I do not have to drive far for good sushi. I can just go three blocks away. Please try them if you try them again!! The seared Aji tuna is completely different. It is so good. I ordered two of them. Blazing mango sushi roll has mango and strawberries in it, but it also has jalapeño it is a party. Moshi Moshi Because it's COVID season, we ordered pick-up or take-out... The inside of the restaurant is small, but very cute. We live blocks away z so the sushi was still really fresh when we got home and ate. I say this up-front because it ties into part of my review below. Almost everything was really good. Here's what we got: - Soft Shell Crab (appetizer): very good. A little too crispy / fried, but overall pretty good. - Veg Tempura (appetizer): really good - Heart Attack (The appetizer, not a medical condition): really good, and a bit spicy which it should be since it has big pieces of jalapeno. Now for the roles / sushi. Their menu says Maki, which is the sushi. I'm going to lump some together: - Spicy Tuna, Spicy Scallop, and Philadelphia: All were really good. These are considered the normal sushi or Maki, so their on the less expensive side. - Godzilla: This is a specialty role / Maki, and is $18. It was ok, but that's about it. Probably not worth the $18. - Crispy Garlic Salmon: Not good at all and the reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 5. This is a $16 role, and my suggestion to the restaurant and patrons would be to remove it from the menu or never order it. I eat sushi and fish all the time, so I know I'm eating fish and I know what fish should taste like. The salmon in this role was so fishy smelling and tasting, we only ate 1 piece and couldn't eat the rest. We threw the rest out....$16 down the drain. My point here is that a $16 role should be of utmost quality and taste, and honestly the 2 specialty roles we got were not that good, and were worse in quality than the normal / cheaper roles. In this particular instance, you don't get what you pay for. read more

I love the price and lunch specials for everything. I can say though just because my husband was a sushi chef at a more high end restaurant that the rice on the rolls need to be scaled down. Other than that, I absolutely think this place is a hidden gem. They need more places like this in downtown Des plaines Will be back! read more

All I can say is WOW. I was sceptical at first but then after reading some good and bad reviews I decided to give it a try, especially since I live right across the street which makes it easy for a pick up. I ordered from the happy hour (white dragon, kamikaze, spicy tuna, and shrimp crunch). You tasted flavor in every roll, the rice was soft and fluffy and beautiful presentation. My girl cousins and I made same day reservations on Saturday, March 27th, I called at 5pm for 3 people at 7pm. We arrived and the waitress whom I believe is the owner was very nice. Please note I come here often 5-6 times a year but this time without my son, it was girls night! The waitress suggested the mango soju which served us three for $20!! So yummy!!! We each ordered 2 different rolled, let's see if I can remember which one's.... caterpillar, holy moly, mango tango, oh-my-God, kamikazi and Rainbow dragon. Everything was finger-licking-great!!!! Total was about $120 and we split it into 3. Service and environment was great, no complaints. read more

Excellent establishment! I met some folks there for a business dinner and ordered two rolls and a small sake. The seating is pretty large actually. In between each tables are those little air walls. It's nice to keep your privacy, but harsh if you have a heavy jacket! Those things fall easy! The selection was plentiful. I ordered a Rainbow Roll and White Dragon. Because it was a work meeting, I didn't take any photos. They were large and the price was very reasonable. For two rolls and a small sake, I walked out paying $33 without tip. It's a clean place and the servers are attentive. It's right in downtown Des Plaines with ample parking. I want to go back and try this again! It's a great place! read more

The food is always delicious. When they are busy, expect long wait times, but the quality of the food never suffers. It's always fresh and crisp pristine flavors. The staff is usually attentive and makes sure you're happy. They did apologize often for the long wait times, but it was worth the wait. The area is nice so even if you have to wait, you can find something to do. Parking isn't horrible, it's usually easier to find parking on Pearson. read more

Love: $7.95 lunch specials, including bento boxes (like bulgogi, beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki) and atleast a dozen different rolls. The assorted veggie tempura with my bulgogi was uber fresh and crispy, and I also got 4 California roll pieces and a half bowl of rice (a little skimpy, yes). Went here with my mom for a quick lunch, and I was not disappointed! They are open for lunch (until 2:30), and then they reopen for dinner. They had some great deals for lunch combos, and they offer a variety of noodles, bento boxes, sushi, and soup. I had the "Sake Bomb" roll, which had spicy crab, cucumber, and then was topped with salmon and some spices sauce. It was delicious! The roll was eight pieces long, and enough to fill me up. My mom had the "Oh My God" roll, and she said it was extremely delicious. We also shared an order of the potstickers, which were crispy and plump! For all that we ordered, we only paid $31.00! So between the prices, and delicious food, the variety, and the intimate decor, I will definitely come back, and I do recommend this place! read more

This is located by the Des Plaines metra station, in downtown Des Plaines. The exterior looks decent, but patrons who were interesting in coming in had a difficult time figuring out if they were "open" since it appeared to pretty dark inside. The hours were posted on the entrance. They only open during lunch and dinner time, so the business hours were not continuous. We ordered the specials for today: chicken katsu curry and spicy salmon sushi combo. There was another neon board with four (4) other specials, one being salmon tataki...Well, I should have ordered that. Everything we ordered had a good taste, and the quality of fish was pretty good as well. However, I had a feeling that I should have ordered something else. On a side note, I felt that katsu was over-prices: $15! The size of the cutlet was average, and there was nothing special about it. Regarding my sushi combo, I can for sure find a better deal in Chicago. The table near us ordered some kind of tempura lunch combo and the presentation looked more glamorous than our order. I guess there will always be next time. Despite the ordering chargin, the atmosphere was cozy and private. I enjoy the Korean music playing on the background. I think I may have an opportunity to come back and give them another chance. By the way, the total came to $35...yeah, kind of steep, but it is what a Japanese restaurant typically charges. A very unexpected gem we found right in downtown Des Plaines! Honestly was not expecting much as we live in Downtown Chicago, but this place was surprisingly delicious. The bulgogi was a hit with the kids.. just mixed a little of the broth with the veggies and meat in rice and the kids just ate it up! We ordered both rolls and nigiri and they were fresh.. not overly seasoned or sweet like so many other establishments. The hamachi is definitely top grade. The service was very attentive and the quality of the food impressed.. We will definitely be back! read more

This has become one of our favorite spots since moving to the area. We are a big fan of the bento boxes. Has a lot of everything! Plenty for two meals for me. Love the tempura and voice of rolls. Even when carrying out they pack it so it is as fresh as can be. read more

This place was very nice and cozy. I was very pleased with the quality of the food. We ordered the spicy combo and it was enough for two people. We also had a ramen noodles soup and it was big but very delicious too. I noticed they hace a big variety of sushi and prices were not that bad. Service was great! They were very prompt. I don't why they have such a high rating but saying it's overpriced is an understatement. I didn't try their sushi so I can't speak on that but I ordered a tonkatsu curry and it was $18... I thought it was going to the most amazing breaded pork and from scratch curry. Nope, store bought everything from any Asian grocery store. Also, I'll add that this is a Korean owned Japanese restaurant. So if you're looking for authentic Japanese food, look elsewhere. read more

Had a very nice dinner time at Dotombori this evening! We started with the shrimp tempura apps with a glass savingnon blanc and my date a beer. I had the bento box steak teriyaki that came with more tempura, salad and miso soup and my selected spicy tuna sushi. Gf had a steak teriyaki dinner everything was super yum. Service is very efficient and friendly. I would return again next time I'm in Des Plaines. read more

Years ago I came here for lunch and I remembered it being very good. Went out with a best friend of mine and was looking for a cozy good quality sushi spot. I was worried that I wouldn't love the ambience. It's not blufish! Blufish gives a more upscale vibe, this place however is cozy,quaint and intimate with unbelievably tasteful food. The service is also incredible! I was iffy about going and I am so glad that I did because it's my sushi go to! It's a small spot but it's clean and cozy! The food is fresh and the service is amazing because the people are just so kind, attentive, and friendly. We had gyoza (potstickers) and shrimp shumai SO GOOD. We also had the obvious sushi (see pics) pink crunch (wasabi and radish flavors so you must like that to enjoy this special roll. So gooooood!) I will include photos you must try the soju! I wasn't going to but my friend insisted and it is incredible! tastes like something from liquid fusion. Fresh fruit blended with Korean wine holy moly it's delicious and it is not overly sweet although you would think it would be by the looks of it. Expect a respectable buzz . Our servers were absolute sweethearts! This place is also easier on the wallet for quality food. It's a win win! read more

Love this local spot and I've come here multiple times to support during the pandemic. Sushi is always fresh!! They are quick too and takes only 20 minutes from your order time. Great price for rolls when you order for happy hour (4-6 pm).. I got the downtown fire roll, which was missing eel sauce but was still great! Definitely a hidden gem to echo other reviews! We were also desperately looking forward to some good food after a mostly mediocre week of restaurant food while traveling. We came here a little after 8 pm on a Friday so the dinning room wasn't busy at all. We ordered 4 rolls including the namesake, Dotombori, which is tented in foil atop smooth rocks and sea salt and then set on fire. Inside the foil there is the smallest drizzle of sesame oil which imparts a explosion of flavor on your first bite. The other 3 rolls were equally great and the portions were generous (8-9 pieces per roll). We will definitely be coming back the next time we are in the mood for sushi. read more

I can walk to this restaurant. When it first opened, I didn't think it would last. It's in a community of older residents - who I thought probably don't eat sushi. Wrong. It's been around for years now. The sushi fresh and delicious. It's small but a pleasant place to eat. They even serve sake! A great place to go! read more

Cute spot in Des Plaines! Came here for lunch, the staff was friendly and sushi came out at a decent time but the quality wasn't that great. Not saying the fish smelled off or anything but the rolls didn't taste that good. I may be a bit of a sushi snob tho so don't knock it till you try it! read more

I had to sit there eating sushi while practically freezing. The service wasn't great either. The server came to the table, and you could clearly tell she was freezing too. I honestly feel bad for the employees having to work in those conditions doesn't seem right. The food itself was good, but not good enough to make up for how uncomfortable the experience was. Ambiance is great. They definitely have that Japanese izakaya vibe. Go to Sankyu if you have time on your hands and order menu items that are likely ordered often and you will have a 4-5 star experience.

We came on a weekday around 5:30 and the place was practically empty when we got there and not too busy when we left, either. So when we arrived, they gave us the rundown. It's an all-you-can-eat place for two hours (at least on weekdays--it may be different on weekends or peak hours). You also get to visit the appetizer area, which had a variety of stuff including fried rice, egg rolls, orange chicken or something, and more. There's a sushi area where there were several different types of sushi. Desserts are available as well, and they looked good though we forgot about them. The available veggies and stuff is a smaller selection of choices than some other hot pot restaurants I've been to. But that doesn't mean you'll go hungry. While we were here we got brisket, chicken, calamari, lotus root, broccoli, potatoes, a couple different types of noodles, gyoza, and there was more that we didn't get of course. They have like six different types of hot pot base you can choose from, and you can get refills of that, too, during your 2 hours' time. I got what was described as the "spicy sour" soup base, and my partner got the Szechuan which was described as the spiciest. Everything was excellent, the meal was a great value (~35 per person), though the drinks were a little high. I got a couple peach iced teas and they were $7 a pop, so overpriced but the rest of the meal was so reasonable the cost of the drink was not a big deal. There's lots of parking in the municipal lots, and you might even be able to park in the library lot, so parking shouldn't be an issue. If you're coming from the city or a nearby suburb, it's also a block away from the Des Plaines stop on the UP-NW Metra line. I've already told my sister we're coming back here when she next comes to visit, and I'm looking forward to it.

She was there when we needed her, was very pleasant and helpful and helped make our experience a great one. The food is all included and endless, but you pay extra for drinks. They have a full bar if you are interested (but at noon, it wasn't for us). There is a two-hour time limit, and we hit our fill before time ran out.

They switched to fresh cut since my last visit, and this was an upgrade. My sandwich was great, and huge too. Could not finish it. Wife's meal was a humongous slab of salmon. The veggies now come on a smaller plate, but that's okay, given the size of the fish. Service was a tad slow, but like I said, we weren't in any hurry. Total tab was $100, with tax and that pesky 3% service fee. I really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. It's not a place I can go every week, but when I can splurge, and have a taste for fresh seafood, this is the best around.

I hate to sound like an old man about it, but I guess it falls to people like myself to continue to support more of the traditional places like these over the young ones. Anyway, based on just the marinated galbi my family had, I must give them 5 stars!

The drinks looked amazing, but we came here for the food. Recommended by staff was the ceviche & molcajetes -- they weren't kidding when they said those were good. We were so full when eating but kept going back for more as the flavor was addicting. The ceviche, made with tilapia, came out shaped like a fish -- an extremely cute way of plating that caught our attention inmediately. The flavor was amazing, not too fishy, perfectly paired with citrus, and minced small enough that we weren't left chewing our seafood for long. This paired perfectly with the accompanied chips, or if you're me, just eat it by the spoonful because it was that good and refreshing. The molcajete was....insane. You can't go wrong with flame grilled meat piled high in a stone bowl, but each piece had it's own flavor and was so delicious. Though served with homemade tortillas to make your own wrap, I couldn't stop myself from just grabbing the meat on its own. This was the first time I tried cactus as well, and to my surprise it had just as much flavor as the meat. The salsa that is poured on top of all the meat pools at the bottom of the molcajete after your meal, making for a great treat at the end with some rice. Speaking of rice, their rice is perfectly fluffy and has great flavor as well. I'm typically not a fan of beans but I couldn't stop eating the ones that accompanied our meal...how did they season everything so perfectly? I also ordered the enchiladas oaxaqueñas (mole), but ultimately was served the verdes. This wasn't a big deal for me and I didn't even bring this up since I devoured my plate anyway, but after reading a few reviews have found out that they often are out of the mole sauce and possibly just served me the green sauce for that reason. Something to be aware of in case you were set on trying their mole! All in all, this restaurant packs flavor, quality, and great service. Staff was always attentive and I wish I lived closer to try more items.

The place is far more modern and updated looking with fresh booths and pretty painted walls, despite being a long standing establishment. The coffee is strong and perfect diner coffee - just how I like it. The menu is ample and hard to choose. I had the French toast with berries and banana . The berries and banana were fresh and plentiful. French toast was standard - exactly what I wanted. And the maple syrup was served warm!

This place is hands down my go to sushi spot in Des Plaines. The quality has always been solid. Fresh, consistent, and satisfying every single time. I've been coming here for years, and now that they're open on Sundays too, it's even more convenient to pop in when the craving hits. They've got happy hour specials, which is always a win. The menu has changed a bit from what it used to be, but I've got a few favorites I keep going back to. The Rainbow and Crazy Boy rolls are always a hit. And if you're up for a little mystery, definitely try the Chef's Daily Special. It's different every time, so it kind of feels like a sushi surprise. That's half the fun. It's also a perfect spot to grab a bite before catching a show at the Des Plaines Theatre. Easy, casual, and reliably good. That's why I keep coming back. read more

I had a fantastic experience at Dotombori! The food was delicious, place is relaxing, and the service was excellent. The waitstaff were attentive and friendly, ensuring we had everything we needed. All of them was nice and decent. They also served my orders on time. I ordered their Bulgogi bento, Tempura, and their sushi. I was really satisfied and my stomach was really full. I highly recommend this restaurant for a great dining experience! Definitely will visit again soon! read more

Great little neighborhood joint. Very small but clean. The rolls are always fresh and service is about as good as it gets when it comes to a neighborhood place. Love the caterpillar roll and the oh my god roll. Its a nice place to visit after work for a quick meal and location is easy to get to. Staff knows me by name which is always a nice touch and makes you feel like they appreciate your business. All they need to do is start delivering and I'll be ecstatic read more

This is my favorite sushi spot. I have eaten alot of sushi and have tried a lot of different places. This is by far the best I've had. I am here at least once a week. Their rolls are fresh and fast. Their soju cocktails are blended with real fruit and every flavor is delicious! 10/10! read more

You got to be kidding me!!!! Shin Ramen??? For $9??? Sushi was pretty decent.. however Their Ramen is Ripped Off.. OMG.. (Go to Asian Grocery. You can get Shin Ramen for less than $1 per package) Please make more genuine quality Ramen for Customer. read more

This sushi spot is okay. The ramen seemed like it was pretty basic. Sushi rolls were okay and fit the special price we paid, but would not consider paying full price for the quality and taste I experienced. The plus side is the very friendly staff! read more
