Chocolate Dosae
Molly L.

We ordered the chocolate dosae and were just mildly impressed. The dosae texture was very gritty and for a sweet dessert, it was a little too savory, with a butter and salt flavor to the dosa. The chocolate inside was good, but it sort of was overtaken and overpowered by the dosae itself. Maybe we will try one of the savory dosas in the future, but our experience here was just okay.

Dosae in Hayward, East Bay, is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic South Indian food. The restaurant offers a wide variety of dosas and other South Indian dishes that are both flavorful and satisfying. With its welcoming ambiance, attentive service, and reasonable prices, Dosae provides a delightful dining experience that keeps customers coming back for more. The dosas at Dosae are authentic Bangalore style. They are perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The accompanying coconut chutney and sambar are fresh and flavorful, complementing the dosas well. We absolutely loved the masala dosae which is definitely a must try here. The set dosae and sagu masala dosae were delicious. We also tried their rava idlis which were soft and fluffy and the madduru vadas were crispy and savory. For beverages we went for filter coffee and mango Lassi. Overall we had an amazing experience and would highly recommend them.

Sagu Masala Dosae

F O O D + Sagu masala dosae: A fermented savory rice and lentil crepe that comes with coconut chutney, sagu (like vegetable korma), and pickles. The portions of sides were generous, and I felt like I should have ordered another dosae to finish them. *Be aware that Bangalore/Bengaluru style doesn't have masala potatoes or sambar. It came out a little soggy maybe from being packed in a closed box? S E R V I C E + Order at the kiosk at the counter for dine in or takeout + Food came out pretty quickly A M B I A N C E + Casual and minimal dining space in a cloud kitchen + Ample parking in the lot outside T L ; D R Bangalore/Bengaluru style dosae in a cloud kitchen. Overall, I enjoyed the sagu masala dosae and all the sides; however, I wish they had an option for a thicker and crispier Benne dosae like Darshini in Milpitas.

Plenty of choices, and they kept everything stocked so nothing felt picked over. I liked that the food tasted fresh, not like it had been sitting. I've also tried their lamb chops buffet Friday before, and that's honestly the reason I came back. The lamb chops were juicy, well-seasoned, and didn't have that dry texture you sometimes get. Service was chill and friendly, nothing over the top but they made sure we were good. Overall, good food, good portions, and worth it if you're hungry and want variety.

The buffet is available on weekends (I believe from 11 AM to 2 PM) and offers a nice selection of flavorful dishes, along with free drinks! The staff is friendly and attentive, and they do a great job keeping the buffet stocked. Whenever a tray started running low, fresh food appeared almost immediately. That attention to detail made the experience feel well-managed and welcoming. The atmosphere is another plus. The newer buffet area gives the restaurant a unique feel, but traditional indoor seating is also available if you prefer. This exceptional establishment has become my go-to destination for experiencing the genuine flavors and aromas that transport me back to cherished memories of home-cooked meals from years past. I discovered Flavor of India several years ago, and since that initial visit, I have never once been disappointed--not with the food, not with the service, and not with the overall experience. What makes this restaurant truly special is the remarkable consistency they maintain. Every time I walk through their doors, I know I'm in for an authentic culinary journey that honors traditional North Indian cooking methods and recipes. The heart and soul of Flavor of India are undoubtedly Pawan and Gurudev, the dedicated staff members who don't just serve customers--they welcome guests like family. Their warm hospitality creates an atmosphere that goes far beyond a typical dining experience. They remember regular customers, take time to explain dishes, make thoughtful recommendations, and genuinely care about ensuring everyone feels comfortable and well-cared-for. This personal touch transforms a simple meal into something meaningful and memorable. The restaurant's physical space itself contributes significantly to the overall ambiance. Abundant natural light floods the dining area, creating a bright, welcoming environment that feels both refreshing and inviting. Unlike dimly lit restaurants where you strain to see your food, Flavor of India's well-lit space allows you to fully appreciate the vibrant colors of the dishes--the rich reds of tandoori preparations, the golden hues of curries, and the fresh greens of chutneys and garnishes. Adding another layer to the sensory experience, the restaurant often plays bhajans--devotional songs that provide a spiritual and cultural soundtrack to your meal. These traditional hymns are a true blessing, creating an atmosphere that feels authentically connected to Indian culture and heritage. The combination of soulful music with the aromatic spices wafting from the kitchen creates a multisensory experience that engages not just your taste buds but your entire being. Whether you're seeking the comfort of familiar childhood flavors or exploring North Indian cuisine for the first time, Flavor of India delivers on every front. The authenticity of the food, the warmth of the staff, the inviting atmosphere, and the thoughtful cultural touches all combine to create a dining experience that nourishes both body and soul. This is more than just a restaurant--it's a place where tradition, hospitality, and exceptional food come together perfectly.

We got the pani puri, the samosas, and we both got their lunch combo. The pani puri was like eating stale tortillas, like they bought the economy pack and will keep using them regardless of freshness. The samosas were good, not really rememberable or better than other Indian food spots. The bf got their butter chicken and the sauce was good. But I don't go to Indian places to get the butter chicken. I actually don't remeber what I got for my lunch combo, but it wasn't anthing to write home about. Pricing was okay given it was the lunch time special pricing. Honestly the atmosphere felt like a family shop where no one wants to work there but it pays the bills. There's a counter filled with unlabeled treats. They looked good but I had no idea what they were. Service was the minimum which doesn't really bother me but some people enjoy it. Felt really cramped filled with tables and people who think they're having an exotic lunch instead of McDonald's. This place is not for me and after I told by bf this he agreed. Kinda hard to find, it's like a blink and you miss it. Parking is sparse, I parked down the street.

We have our favorites from their menu but they host a variety of curries, proteins, and small bites/street eats. Panipuri - crispy balls ready to be loaded up with lentils, delicious fillings and sauces, these mouthfuls are great for starters but you'll find yourself eating these throughout the meal not only because you're hungry but also because you just can't get enough of them. Samosas - hearty fried dumplings packed with potatoes that are perfect for eating on the go. Great by itself or with sauces and curry, these hot pockets are a burst of flavor that will stuff you up. Goat curry - full of flavor and a bit on the spicy end for those sensitive to capsaicin. Pair with naan or rice and you'll be golden, from the tastes you'll be experience as well as the heat! Butter paneer/chicken - the sweetness of the curry is subtle but the creaminess is what will win you over. Smothered over chicken or paneer, this is a delicious palate pleaser. Biryani - solid staple, flavorful and cooked perfectly. Great by itself or paired with some curry or a grilled entree. Salmon - delicious but a bit overcooked for my liking but in a pinch, omega-3s can be supplemented in this meal. Overall, Phulkari satisfies our craving for Indian curry any day and it's great knowing that the experience will consistently be a good one anytime those cravings come up.
