Our house came with a janky sliding glass back door that we immediately replaced. The install job for the replacement door was shoddy and a source of regular irritation for my husband. A few months back we got heavy rain and noticed water seeping onto our hardwood floor. We thought it was just the weather stripping, but replacing it didn't solve the issue so I reached out to Door Guy. I had reached out before for smaller issues and we never really connected, but now that we're home all the time it made things a lot easier. Lynn came out, inspected the door and explained what he wanted to do, the process and was upfront about the cost, which wasn't cheap. He also showed us how to adjust the sash to ensure there wasn't air, water, etc. coming in under the door. We knew we had to get it done and gave him the green light. About a week later Lynn and a helper were ready to get to work. It took them about 4 hours and I heard a lot of "interesting", "that was on backward", and my favorite - "I don't know what this is about" while he worked. Along the way, he showed me the problems with the original install, namely the door being pitched 10 degrees towards the house. It hasn't rained much and there was all kinds of water trapped there which caused our leaking and left untouched would've caused wood rot. The reinstalled door is fantastic. He properly shimmed the door, so it no longer squeaks loudly when opening and closing. Adjusting the door alone probably took him about an hour. He also fixed the handle, which among other things wasn't attached properly. If you've got door trouble Lynn aka Door Guy is the best. read more

Our front door stuck badly from the day we bought our townhouse, which was been built in the 1940's. When the weather was extreme (which is most of the time), we'd have to body slam the door to open and close it. Sometimes, the misalignment was so bad that it was impossible to open the door, because we couldn't exert enough force to turn the key. Over three decades we brought in three different carpenters to fix the problem, paying close to four figures each time. They all took the door off, shaved it, and told told us it couldn't really be fixed due to warping in either the door, or the frame. Each time, the problem was alleviated somewhat, only to eventually return when the seasons changed. Most recently we were told we would need to replace the entire frame, which contains a side window panel, at a cost in the significant five figures. Then we called Lynn. In one afternoon, at a cost of slightly more than what each of the carpenters charged, Lynn fixed the door. In fact, he diagnosed the problem and assured us it was unlikely the door would need to be replaced, before he even arrived. For the first time, the door operates normally. It doesn't stick. It opens and closes without effort, and there's no problem getting the key to work. The work was done in mid-summer, and we're now close to mid-winter, and there's been no degradation. He went above and beyond to fix our back door then replace it while we were traveling internationally. No other contractors would do it and not only did he do a phenomenal job, coming in a snow storm to do it. He did extra work at no charge to make our door more secure and then install a top the line replacement for the same as some guys charged for cheap Home Depot pine wood doors and frames. Nice guy but completely unreliable. Doesn't return calls or emails. I used him once bc my building recommended him, among others. I had to chase him but he did eventually finish it after I sent an email asking "do you want to do this job or not?". Move forward a few years and I have another issue. I call him and he agrees to check it out that day and he would give a call when he is heading over. It's a Saturday and after waiting til 5 for a call I call back and he says he forgot but will head over. We meet and he says he can do it. Then he disappears again. Several emails with no response. Doesn't answer phone. Meanwhile I am selling my place and need the door fixed for inspections. And he is nowhere to be found. My handyman ended up doing it. Look elsewhere. read more

I'm a property manager and the company I work for uses this company regularly. They do a very good job at a reasonable price. People who have complained about their availability need to get a grip on reality. This is a small company with a small staff, and sometimes they are too busy to take every job. If they can't take your job right now, ask them when they might be available again rather than torching them on Yelp for work they didn't even do. read more

Background: I've been meaning to write this review for a few months. In February 2020 we had the Door Consultants come to take a look at our wood back entry door that was closing slightly off-center due to what appeared to be an issue with the top hinge. Earlier in the summer I attempted to DIY fix-it by ordering a new hinge, and it only slightly improved the situation. After getting a few quotes for a door replacement (which would be costly due to custom sizing required) I decided to try the door consultants. I sent them an email in the late morning, they called me later that afternoon, and since they were working on a project nearby they were available the same day to come out on a Wednesday evening at around 7 pm (I work late hours so that was my earliest availability). After quick work by the crew of 2 my door was closing with ease again, better than I had expected. Work by the Door Consultants was hands down the best $200.00 I ever spent on service/maintenance for the house, and saved me hundreds/thousands of dollars not having to replace what was an otherwise functional back door. read more

He rudely said no find somebody else I do not have time for you and to be shown you any pictures I am too busy and I already have enough business. After a storm I noticed serious buckling of my hardwood floors by my back door. A moisture meter showed there was quite a bit of moisture. With another storm on the way in a couple of days I was quite concerned the problem would become insurmountable. I called Lynn early in the morning expecting to leave a message - and he actually returned my call right away hours before they opened. After explaining the urgency of the situation - that I needed the work done before the oncoming storm - he not only came early evening to look at the door and diagnose the issue, but made sure he fit the job in (which required the fabrication of a custom piece) before the deadline. They were quick, professional, explained pricing and the why behind the what before doing work. You know what they say: When it rains it pours and well as they were fixing the door I heard a thud and some shelves had peeled away from the drywall due to a neighbors faulty water heater and gravity. He was a happy to take a peak because I was nervous about further damage or something worse happening and he helped me locate the main water valve to the building to shut it off and referred me to a remediation guy to contact. Lynn Ward, the Door Guy, installed the double front doors at our condo building in Lincoln Park 15+ years ago. Recently, we started have closure issues with the "common" door leading to the upstairs units. Lynn remembered the original project and worked us into his busy schedule to stop by and assess the situation. Work for repairs was scheduled within a week and the door is now closing and works like new. Lynn also suggested a new door closure that may be needed within the next year. He told us he will provide a "reconditioned" one as the new ones are quite expensive but to wait until we need it. Lynn Ward is a master door guy, adept at solving various complex matters regarding doors and their parts. We hired him on two occasions, first to replace an old security door to our condo courtyard, and more importantly, to install a custom made iron door from Abby Iron Doors in Georgia (with transom and sidelights) to replace our entry door. This particular door was a complex case, one that took over a year in planning. I was able to check with him and get his opinion and approval on various parts during the process, such as the mortise lock, the electric strike, the closer, along with many other concerns. Once the door finally arrived, he and his "helpers" were able to figure out how to safely hoist the 900lb beast into place. Then The Door Guy (as he likes to be called) effortlessly installed the mortise lock, the closer, the electric strike and got the buzzer and intercom system working that same day. I was so relieved by his expertise during this process and knew when I met him he was the right guy for the job. Even though he was more expensive than the other quotes I got, I'm convinced his expertise saved us money in a few different ways.
