Visited donut world as we explore some different options for our wedding dessert table....after all, who doesn't love donuts? We got there later in the day, so missed the prime selection of donuts but still got some great flavors. Popped by here for a quick donut and coffee before heading out of town. Not super impressed. The donuts were good, but nothing special. I will even say that they seemed kind of small compared to most places. Coffee was warm, but generic coffee that you could probably get from a gas station. However, they do have a $2 coffee and donut deal which is nice. Pricing was just ok... I paid a little over $7 for 2 donuts (that were fairly small), a dozen donut holes and a coffee... I guess it wasn't horrible, but not up to my standards for $7 at a donut shop like this. Not to mention there wasn't much seating and it was very plain and had a very underwhelming vibe. Donut World is a cross between Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Creme. The shell (yeast) donuts ( glazed, jelly filled, maple frosted, etc.) are great. The shells taste like they've been made with real milk rather than the water used in Dunkin Donuts' powdered mix. The cake donuts could use some work. They constantly appear to not have been raised properly before hitting the fryer. The donuts would be perfect if they weren't overly sweet. Cut back on the sugar by about 20 percent and they would be perfect. Prices? Extremely high. The two tier price structure is a turnoff. Why not just average the donut price and have all the donuts cost the same? Lastly, the person behind the counter should be friendlier. These problems aren't major. Fix them and you'll have much more customers! read more

We tried several donuts from this location. Apple Fritter- The apple fritter had a good amount of texture and apple chunks in it. That said, the oil seeped into the dough making it very greasy and heavy. Old Fashioned- This tasted sweet but a little dry. It tasted as though it was out for a day. Glazed Buttermilk- The flavor of this donut was sweet and a little salty. Like the apple fritter, it had oil seeped into the inside of the donut. It seems like this franchise has extremely similar donuts to a few other donut shops. The donuts are identical though the execution (dryness, oil, look of the fritters) varies at times. When you enter these shops, you don't get the amazing aroma of donuts frying, you experience a shop with a seemingly clinical atmosphere. When I first discovered Donut World, they had one location on Market St. I moved to the Triad region in 1988 and had been searching for many years for a doughnut that was similar to Canadian doughnuts. I'm making a long story short. The end result was me going and taking their Donuts (by the dozen) to where I was employed and telling everybody to go and buy doughnuts from this new donut shop. The reason I did that primarily is I did not want them to fail. I finally found a doughnut that was amazing. Wick little place, or rather places, now that they opened one on Battleground. These are simply the best, and the sweetest, donuts in the Triad area, bar none. They also are very large, especially the apple fritter. The apple fritter is my favorite, reminds me of the ones I used to get at a little bakery on Elm Street, about a ziillion years ago. Finally, a place that makes kolaches!!! Fresh off the plane from Texas, I went straight to Donut World. Yep, I went for the kolaches but ended up with donuts as well. Everything was so delicious! I actually came back the next day, but they were sold out and tend to sell out quickly. But one of the employees said I could go ahead and place an order and they would put them aside the next morning. I picked them up the next morning baked fresh. Would I drive an hour just for a dozen of Donut World's finest? Yes. But luckily, my parents live in Greensboro; giving the commute a little more purpose. (Or the home visit a little more reward?) Dropped in today for my fill of the apple fritter donut (which is hands-down the best I've had anywhere). Also snagged a raspberry filled (comparable to a Krispy Kreme version, but with far more jelly filling) and a blueberry cake (SO. Good. The blueberries were so fresh, this donut actually tasted like fruit! And the cake-batter consistency was awesome.) My doggy bag has one of their special topping donuts (I picked coconut on top of chocolate) as well as a cinnamon-y number I can't wait to try. A dozen will cost you $7-something; and we ordered a few specialty donuts that somehow upped the price to $9 and change. But after eating the goods, I think we all agreed they're worth the price. Really great donuts. The guy running the place on the Sunday morning I went was really helpful in picking out favorites. The donuts differ from the chains and remind me more of a thick but light and airy donut. The toppings were varied and with just the right amount of sweetness. I love Donut World donuts. I do not love the fact that the Donut World on West Market Street is never open on time. They suppose to open at 6am, but 90% of the time that I get there between 6:05 and 6:10am they are not open. The guy that works the morning hours always tells me to wait for a few minutes. I usually wait for 2 to 3 minutes and he still doesn't open up the store, so by 6:12am I leave without ever getting in. They should change the hours of the West Market Street store to later since they are never open at 6am when I arrive. There are many days that I have left without donuts. I am a tipper, so I alway have my tip in hand when I go to the door, but he always tells me to wait. I don't have a long window to wait, so I leave. read more

I went to Greensboro for a day trip to visit one of my closest friends, and she insisted that we stop here because these were the "best donuts" she's ever had. Even though we were all ridiculously full from a long afternoon tea (and lunch before that), we stopped to grab two glazed donuts. I was so excited to try these 5 star donuts I keep reading about but was a bit disappointed. They were fresh, good flavor and texture, a bit small compared to most donut shops and rather pricey for donuts. We got a mixed dozen that was nearly $13. All twelve donuts were different so we could find the best, but none were worth writing home about. The apple fritter was good, but small and nowhere close to Granny's Donuts. The glazed was good, but Britt's Donuts in Carolina Beach is still way better. The Chocolate Supreme was about 1/4 the size of HomeStyle Donuts in California with a fraction of the chocolate chips. The chocolate cake donut with chocolate chips was good, the jelly donut had a lot of filling but it's the same gooey gel everybody uses. Overall, I've had individual donuts that were far superior compared to each of theirs, but in general, it's still a pretty good donut shop. I would take them any day over Dunkin, but would still take a hot Krispy Kreme over most of these. I've heard the Blueberry Cake donut is awesome, and that's why we went, but they were sold out. After reading about Donut World having "authentic California style apple fritters" I knew I was going to have to make a trip to Donut World in Greensboro. The amount of available donut flavors made my brain hurt and were more than enough to bring shame to every Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme in NC. There were so many Apple Fritters I didn't know what to do with myself so I ordered four... for myself :) I couldn't resist the sweet sounds of the Maple Bacon donut or the Bear Claw... so I got those too :) The Maple Bacon was surprisingly not my favorite which is odd given my lifelong devotion to all things bacon related. It was a really good donut but out of the three types of donuts I got it was my third favorite. Holding up the #2 spot was the Cali Style Traditional Bear Claw. I haven't been able to find a proper Bear Claw since leaving my home state and I was reliving many childhood memories as I had apple goo running down my mouth. The real star of the show was of course.. the Apple Fritter. Oh Apple Fritter... how I lay in bed awake remembering every one of your crunchy, chewy, apple, fried greatness bites. In California the Apple Fritters are HUGE, have chunks of apple, and are easily the best donut in the shop. On the east coast apple fritters don't even deserve to be referred to with the same name. If you're in Greensboro, near G'boro, or heading through G'Town anytime soon you need to head over to Donut World immediately. I used to love going to donut world. I hadn't been in a long time but I was next door getting dinner and decided to pop in to get the kids some donuts. It was 8:30pm and they closed at 9pm. The door wouldn't open. I saw a girl on her phone behind the counter so I pulled harder. Wouldn't budge. I sent an email to explain the situation to the business but in return I was told I was being knit picky and trying to find something to complain about. I was told the girl didn't know what I wanted when I went to the door. I was also told I should've knocked because the door gets stuck all the time. I have been twice and both times got the chocolate chip donuts. they are big and filled with chocolate chips inside that makes the filling rich, thick and great. They are even toped with chocolate icing and sprinkled with chocolate chips! Great price points too,. Two cost me 3 dollars and was well worth it! Donut World. This place is awesome! Located on Market street in a shopping center with private parking. The store is kind of small, but clean. There are a few tables for sitting in the store. The selection of donuts is mind blowing. If you can think of it.. its in here. I have never been disappointed with the donuts. The apple fritters are awesome. I like the cake donuts too. The chocolate covered donut with chocolate filling and chocolate chips.. wow. Definitely the best in Greensboro. One thing thats a downfall is the pricing. Different donuts cost different prices. Even if you get a mixed dozen there might be a surcharge. I dont even try to figure out the fuzzy math for pricing, I just order what I want and pay what ever rings up. read more

I love this place! Every opportunity I get to drive to Greensboro I swing on by and grab a few donuts. My favorite is the Apple Peterson giant chunks of Apple in them. I've had plenty of them- Bavarian Creme (custard or creme filled and both delicious), Raspberry Filled, Blueberry Cake, Maple bacon, Apple Fritters (to die for), Maple glazed, and my favorite..the good old fashioned donut. I've never been a fan of old fashioned donuts. They are always plain and boring, and really only good for dipping in coffee. But these ones are lightly glazed, thicker consistency, and wonderful flavor! They look like a tractor wheel so if you're a first time visitor, you'll know what I'm referring to. They also have old fashioned chocolate or maple ones as well. Not that everyone is as picky as me, but I've also never been a fan of cream filled donuts. Not custard cream, but that sickly sweet icing. I find it revolting. However, my hubby forced me to try his and it's completely different!
