Helms has a fascinating history. In 1932 their bread, Olympic Bread, was declared the official bread of the Olympic Games. This led to worldwide recognition. Helms was the bread that astronauts in Apollo 11 took to the moon. World Famous. That being said, I've been on a trip for an authentic French baguette since my trip to Paris a couple of years ago. I think I've finally found it! A traditional authentic French baguette is made with a poolish, but many bakeries around LA use a levain in their baguettes. While baguettes made with levains yield a delicious sourdough flavor, but a baguette made with poolish produces a sweet, complex yet simple, nutty flavor. It's sooo good! My only wish is a more crusty outer layer, but nothing a toaster can't fix! I also picked up a kouign-amann and pecan cookie. Both were very yummy! You know what else is great? The prices! my baguette, cookie, and pastry was $13 including a 18% tip. Honestly, something like that would cost closer to $20 at other bakeries. Overall, this place is worth a visit! Check it out.
