I needed two new tires for my car; I got the two tires, at a reasonable price, but then it turned out there had been some work left out. I don't want to go into details about that (or I would be giving no stars), but when I went back to Don's--with my husband, I should add--they took care of the problem in a more-than-fair manner. I do have to say that I wouldn't have thought to have them do the test my husband asked for, the test that proved that the mistake really was theirs, so I concur with what someone else wrote: bring a male, especially one who knows about cars. I felt overwhelmed by the guys. Nice guys--but guys just the same. We WILL go back because they did make up for the problem. I highly recommend Don's Tire Service because I had a great customer experience with them. They were able to locate a quality, reasonably priced set of 205/75/14 whitewall tires for my 1970 Plymouth, and went the extra mile to ensure that the tires were Made in USA. This was important to me since the tires were going on a classic US-made automobile. Denise at Don's Tire is knowledgeable and helpful. And the technician who aligned my car was able to identify an issue with an upper control arm that two other alignment shops had failed to notice previously, and that was causing a nagging pull-to-the-left in my steering. I love going to Don's Tires!!!! Great people who know what they're doing!!!! They went to the "nines" for me today--- out of the blue I needed a special tire today [ Friday, 6/26/09 ]. Don's daughter got my information on the phone, around 1230 hrs., and went out and got the tire from heck and gone. It was on my car by 1500 hrs. I like going there so much, that I've actually considered doing damage to one of my tires, in order to have an excuse for coming in. This place was great! I have runflats which are super expensive. They saved me tons of money by simply checking to see if the nail I ran over even caused a leak (it didn't). Why have I gone anywhere else for tires? I have used this place for over 25 years, (though took a break for awhile because I got a stupid deal on oil changes, and was seduced into buying tires there, but never again.) They have been great for a quick repair for flat tires, besides selling me new ones. I got a great full set of tires several months ago, fair price, great service. The staff are all professional and a pleasure to work with. Don is a kick .. funny and a straight shooter. (I just read about "sexism" here .. NEVER had a whiff of that, and I would have noticed.) Yesterday, I was out driving near Don's and decided I should have the tires rotated. At 9AM, I drove in to ask about a rotation, and they said ... "Sure .. it will take about 15 minutes." Great! Then I decided, why not add an oil change? OK, but they said it would take about 30 minutes. Uh, that's fine. So I walked the neighborhood (to Jimmy Beans across the street, then along Gilman and past shops on 10th, nice walk) while they worked on the car. In 30 minutes my cell phone rings, and I'm told the car is ready. What a deal. Fast, convenient service, and very satisfying. I LOVE buying local, especially when it's this nice. Don's Tire Service is a family business that treats its customers even better than family members. Had a flat this morning and brought the car in so they could look at all of the tires - I figured I'd need at least two new tires. Don (himself) greeted us at the door with a big hello (and remembered our names). He looked at the flat tire and said it could be easily repaired and that all the tires were good at least through the summer. They had the job done (while we ate breakfast across the street at Jimmie Bean's) in about an hour. I can't thank them enough for their honest and genuinely caring staff. Don's rocks!! read more

One tire had a slow leak, I decided to try Don's, despite there being some 1-star reviews. They basically fixed the leak in the estimated time, and charged me a reasonable amount of money. I guess I could complain that the receptionist did not call my cell phone when finished, probably because she was on lunch break. I'll also correct one of the haters: the "big white wheelstop/chocks" are not big, and it wouldn't damage the car to drive over them, but in my case, I did not have to drive over the dreaded 3 inch tall blocks... read more

I brought an older Nissan truck to Don's for new tires. The tires are great, but it's the alignment that brought this vehicle back to life. I could barely parallel park much less make a u turn without breaking a sweat. I had no idea that the alignment was at the root of my despair. Mark at Don's Tires ensured that the technicians invested the time and energy needed to do the job completely. Apparently, the truck was on the alignment rack 2-3 times longer than usual and the technician did everything possible to make my vehicle drive smoothly. Never written a Yelp review before just now, but I just had the best customer service interaction of my life with Jeremy down at Don's tire. Last Thursday I ran over some industrial bolt- it cut a hole through my tire AND through my wheel (looked like a bullet hole, cut straight through the metal). Having to replace a wheel is relatively uncommon, as you would expect. The experience as a whole was super stressful, but Jeremy was my saving grace. I called about 8 places (maybe 4 tire shops and 4 parts yards) on Thursday evening and Friday- the timing was bad obviously, right before the weekend. There was some confusion about getting a part number for the wheel- the part number isn't clearly displayed on the inside of the spoke for my VW Jetta, unfortunately. Though the process wasn't super clear to me at the time, I was asking a lot of the folks I was calling: -find a part number for my wheel (which ended up involving calling the manufacturer, I think) -find a used wheel that would fit my car (new wheels from the manufacturer cost a lot of money- on the order of $500) -order the wheel (and wait for it to arrive) -determine whether my existing tire (bought just three weeks before) could be patched -mount/install/put the new wheel on Jeremy at Don's tire- who I first contacted on Friday morning- got this all done for me by Wednesday at 3pm. Out of the other 7 places I called, I have not gotten a call back from ANY OF THEM, which indicates that a) they really don't care about me, or b) they couldn't find a wheel that would fit my car. Many of them told me they would call me with updates as they searched for a wheel. None have done so, to date. Jeremy called the manufacturer, found out two potential parts numbers for my wheel. He found two used wheels that would fit, and- on a Saturday that Don's was closed- gave me quotes for a new wheel (from manufacturer), and for the two used wheel options for my car. I asked him to order the cheaper option, he did so (again, on a Saturday), so that the wheel would come in on Wednesday. After dealing with me over the weekend, he still was patient enough to talk me through the process of figuring out the tire- I brought my old tire in on Monday to see if it could be patched (it could not be patched). He ordered a new tire on Tuesday, it was there ready for me on Wednesday, I was on the road that afternoon. In short: Jeremy went WAY above and beyond the call of duty and provided me with exceptional customer service and guided me through a really annoyingly difficult situation. Clearly this was a difficult task: no other tire place seemed capable of helping me. I recently got 2 new front tires for my car a couple of weeks ago at $85 dollars each. I came in today to get my car aligned and they tell me that a) The front struts and control arms are shot and would cost 970dollars to fix! b) While a) was upsetting, devastating, and I think the price quoted is ridiculous, I can't really fault the bearers of bad news. But then I was told the front tires are the wrong size for the car and didn't match the size of the tires on the back. I reminded them that they were the ones to put the tires there in the first place, so maybe they might be willing to at least put the right size tires on the front so I could get what I had already paid for two weeks ago. The mechanic told me it didn't matter since one of the back tires was bald and I'd probably have to get new tires on the back as well. In the end they charged me 25 dollars for bringing the car in. To summarize my gripe here: they didn't put the right size tires on the car and when discovering their mistake were unwilling to make it right. read more

I wouldn't go anywhere else for tire problems. I went there today because my mechanic--whom I trust entirely (Richardson Auto in SF), told me that my right front tire needed to be replaced. Don himself attended to me and he looked at my tire and said that it was indeed very worn down but if I was strapped for cash he could just rotate the front and back tires and it would last another 10,000 miles. He did it at no charge, it took about five minutes and I was out of there. That is great service! I found these guys on Berkeley Parent Network and I'm so glad I did. I had a flat tire that was completely ruined and brought it in thinking I was going to have to get all new tires. Not only did they tell me my other three tires were good and had thousands more miles left in them, they suggested I just keep the good spare I had use that with my other three tires.. and they would find a used tire I could use as a spare. I inherited a car which was seriously in need of new tires. I went to Don's Tires on a recommendation from an unaffiliated body shop. The people at the body shop told me I'd probably need a new alignment, and I mentioned that to the Don's representative on the phone. The person to whom I spoke was very helpful. She gave me an appointment the next morning, and steered me toward less expensive tires because I don't drive the car often. They said it would take about two hours to get everything done, and then called to say the car was ready in exactly two hours. Even more, when I got there they told me they hadn't done the alignment because I didn't really need it! These people are kind and friendly and scrupulously honest.
