Excellent thick cut chips but the fish was not to our liking. Although the batter was cooked well there was way too much of it and the small amount of fish inside could barely be tasted. It was more like a Pogo! They were very generous with the chips though. I would recommend splitting a two-piece order if you want to try it. read more

O.M.G! The batter on the fish I had here today was out...of...this...world! Got here bright and early, at 11am, right after opening. Ordered the 2pc cod fish and chips and a side of poutine. Let me tell you about the batter on this fish. It was thick, it was sweet, it held together without falling apart everywhere. No forks needed, just grab the fish and eat it. The fries were nicely done. Poutine was poutine. It was good, but the gravy didn't stand out that much to me. I'm all about the gravy. Ordered at the takeout window, and it was ready pretty fast. I love this place it reminded me of the UK. Haddock or Cod fish fillets breaded and deep-fried wrapped in newspaper with hand cut french fries. We had to try one of her favorite dishes from Canada poutine, it's to die for folks. Yum........... Place is been around from what I understand 60 years it is just nothing but outstanding it's old-fashioned and I love it this way job well done guys job well done thank you we had a fantastic lunch we got up to go as most do and we went down to the park at the waterfront and enjoyed a great meal again thank you. I was told this place had amazing fish and chips by a colleague, so I made sure to add it to my list! Luckily, I had made an Amazon order to the Ogdensburg location, so this was about 20 minutes away. I went in December, so there was no line, but usually they have lines that curve all the way to a house on the road. Their service is SUPER friendly, and I chatted to the lady about the history of the place, and she offered suggestions on activities to do in the area. I tried: - 1 cod and 1 hadock piece: the haddock is MUCH MORE meatier than the cod. Cod is a lot more flaky/tender, but both had a lot of flavour, were fresh, and the batter was crispy and not too oily. I should of gotten a couple more pieces but I was too stuffed! - 1 pogo (they make their own batter): very fresh, and batter does taste better than normal. - 1 poutine: was a bit disappointed since the fries aren't the super crispy type, but it was fresh. The curds were ok, and the gravy was nice and thick. Next time I'll try the fries! They have a bathtub filled with cut potatoes in water (which should help crisp them up), which was cool to see! The whole kitchen is open. I then went to the Aquatarium after, which is about a 5 minute walk; usually it's $20-25 admission, but was free as there was a Christmas market on the 2nd floor! If you're driving by, I would definitely stop by if you like fish/chips, fries, poutine, etc. Next time, I'll ONLY get a few pieces of fish, since the price is reasonable (~$5 for a big, fresh piece)! After searching for a place to have lunch, Don's fish and chips showed up. I read the other reviews and decided to come here and take it to the nearby park to eat. This place was busy! It is very small standing room inside. I ordered 2 haddock small - which means 1haddock fish and fries. The large consist of 2 pieces of fish. Staff is pretty quick filling orders. They had a fan blowing on them, as there is no air con. After getting to the park we opened up the fish n chips, and everyone loved the fries. Fries were good! The fish was good!! To me it looked and tasted more filling than other places I've tried. My wife didn't like the thick skin batter. 4.5 stars for service and food! read more

A break from a long morning of driving the 401 brought me into the quaint river town of Brockville in the 1000 Islands region. More importantly, lunch was calling my name and this hole in the wall was there to fill that void. Don's is just a little shack, big enough for about 8 people to fit snugly standing. You walk in, join the tight queue and order the goods. Haddock and cod are offered. Fries are offered plain or as poutine. Folks, they don't just do fish right here, but the fries are bathed literally in a bathtub in front of you to remove the starch.(They know what they are doing!!!) then they are deep fried to perfection!! No soggy, sad, bland fries. They wrap up the goods, and you wander back out in search of a good place to sit and devour. The gentleman running the register pointed us in a good direction towards a waterfront park. The reviews really aren't being modest, this place knows what they are doing. It's not a greasy oily mess like so many other places offer. Do yourself a favor and make this tiny hole in the wall your next pit stop in between Toronto & Montreal. read more

Ive had authentic fish n chips in UK, i loved it so much that i was fishing for a great location in Montreal, i never found that unique and excellent taste.. I was always turned off but moist uncooked batter or batter that is too thick and fish to small :(! But my visit to Don's fish n chips was a throwbak to my visit in the UK .. In this rather nondescript take-out only spot, the fish is the pivotal point. So I'll cut to the chase: the fish (the haddock, at least) are small but thick chunks, with each piece the size of a potato. The batter is thick and heavy, fried to an even medium-brown tint. Tartar sauce, white vinegar, malt vinegar, and even lemon juice comes available in packets at the counter. A kindly local in a truck pointed out to us that there's a park nearby (less than 5 minutes' walk away) where you can take your newspaper-wrapped fish & chips over to eat on a picnic table. To find this park, upon exiting the shop, turn right and keep walking for a minute or two until you see the park on your left - although the people working inside the will likely be able to give you much better directions. read more

I give this a 3.5/5. I stopped by Don's Fish & Chips for lunch on our way from Toronto to Ottawa. It's a small place, take-out only. I ate in the car. I tried the haddock and the cod, and both were decent. The haddock I felt was cooked better than the cod (was more moist) but the portion size was small. The haddock was approximately the size of a very tight fist. The batter was fried until well done (quite brown), very crispy and clung well to the fish - it was not that dreaded doughy, rubbery batter skin that peels off from the fish, like some fish and chips are prone to. However, I felt the batter was a bit thick. The fries were thick cut, which I liked, but they too turned out very brown and were too well done for my liking. They actually cut up their potatoes and let them soak in a bathtub full of water right behind the counter. I know it's to remove the excess starches from the potatoes and make the fries crispier when fried, but it just looked a bit weird to me. I wish they had house-made tartar sauce, which I've had at other mom-and-pop fish & chips places. They provided 3 small packets of Kraft tartar sauce, with additional packets available for extra cost. They had other (free) condiments, such as ketchup, vinegar, salt, pepper, etc. arranged in a neat little tray on the counter. They even had packets of lemon juice...which was fine given the circumstances bit I would have appreciated a fresh lemon wedge. Packaged lemon juice just doesn't provide the same zing as a freshly squeezed lemon. Overall, not bad. Definitely better than fish & chips from your run-of-the-mill neighbourhood pub, but not the best I've had. Very reasonably priced, though. read more

The fish is good but sometimes a little undercooked. The fries are a little dry I find so I need to either use quite a bit of ketchup or vinegar. They should provide more tartar sauce than just one per fish. I also found the quantity you get for the price is poor compared to about 5 years ago. The fish is about half the size it used to be and the price is at least $3 higher.
