My husband and I have always made it a point to stop at Plaza Pizza whenever we're in Newark…read more Unfortunately, our most recent visit was a huge disappointment. The restaurant just doesn't seem to have recovered since COVID. They no longer offer dine-in service, and all of the tables have been pushed in front of the prep area, so customers can no longer watch the pizzas being made--a feature that used to add to the experience. The condition of the restaurant was concerning. The ceiling tiles were stained and discolored, several were out of place leaving openings to the floor above, and there appeared to be visible mold on ceiling tiles and around the vent above the pizza ovens and prep area. Given the location, it raised concerns for me about sanitation and food safety. The drink cooler was completely empty. When we asked, we were simply told they were out of beverages. We ended up buying drinks from the business next door, where they mentioned that Plaza Pizza customers regularly come there because the pizza shop doesn't have beverages available. The pizza itself wasn't what we remembered. The signature cracker crust that made Plaza Pizza special is gone. It lacked the crisp, fresh texture it once had and instead tasted stale. The bottoms of both pizzas were also dotted with black debris from the oven deck -- the oven decks have been cleaned between pizzas which should be a standard operating procedure. The restaurant was extremely hot inside, and I noticed ingredients such as sauce being kept in containers on the counter rather than in a refrigerated prep table. Having spent many years working in food service, those observations prompted me to review recent Licking County health inspection reports. I found multiple repeat violations that had reportedly remained uncorrected, which made the issues I observed even more concerning. This restaurant used to be one of our favorite stops, and it's disappointing to see how far it has declined. I genuinely hope the owners invest in cleaning, maintenance, and stronger food safety practices because Plaza Pizza was once a local gem. Until then, we'll be taking our business elsewhere.

Visited: Aug 2025 Heritage Honey pizza sounded like a win -- hot honey, basil, ricotta -- but only the basil came to play. Hot honey was too syrupy, crust was super doughy, and I couldn't taste the red sauce or garlic butter base I asked for. (I saw it. My taste buds didn't.) Loaded Pep & Cheese had more flavor, but still not craveable. We debated the wings... then got the Hot Buffalo BBQ. Ordered them extra saucy after seeing those dry pics online. And yeah -- still a letdown. Even cook, no crisp, no seasoning soaked in. Just chicken being chicken with sauce sitting on top. The vibe? Clean, modern, great staff. The flavor? Flat. Good if you're already nearby. Not worth a trip. That basil, though? Still thinking about it.

I do wish the dough was cooked a little bit more but everyone else said it was great. The artichoke pizza did not disappoint since there was an abundance of it. The wings were good because they weren't the traditional breaded then fried. I do wish there was more garlic parm flavor but the ranch sauce helped make up for it. They have everything an Italian restaurant should have like pizza, strombolis, calzones, flatbreads, and full entrées. They serve traditional wedding soup plus 8 different salads. It's the kind of menu range that makes you want to come back and try everything. Our server was experienced, friendly, quick and well-versed in the menu. For our visit, we ordered the original Stromboli served with marinara and a small house salad. The portions were plentiful. My only drawback: both the marinara and the house dressing were a bit too sweet for me. Not bad,, just sweet enough that I wondered if sugar was part of the recipe. Still, with a welcoming atmosphere, a bocce court, a menu full of Italian classics, and generous portions. Carsonie's is an easy place to recommend, sweetness and all.
