If you have ever had a kidney stone, you know the excruciating pain that it causes. If you have undergone the surgery, you know the risks involved, as well as the uncomfortable recovery. Living with the possibility that another stone could send your life into these horrific circumstances at any moment, had me living in constant fear. In 2010, I was living in the Monterey area & experienced another debilitating kidney stone. I went to the CHOMP emergency room & was given sympathetic care & pain medication. Dr. Anthony Shaheen was called in to do surgery & remove the stone. Before, during, and after, he was kind, gentle, & compassionate. Through testing, imaging, & thorough research, Dr. Shaheen determined the type of stones I had been dealing with. He reviewed possible dietary contributions and put me on medication to help me avoid future stones. Thankfully, he did lithotripsy to remove the remaining stones in my kidneys. I couldn't help but wonder: WHY HAD NONE OF MY PREVIOUS DOCTORS DONE ANY OF THESE THINGS???? I have seen Dr. Shaheen annually since then for follow up & happy to report that I remain kidney stone free to this day. I cannot tell you what a tremendous relief that is & the peace of mind that I am now able to live with. I thank God for his thoroughness, his wisdom, and for caring enough to provide me with a comprehensive recovery that ensures my well-being, instead of letting me be a "repeat customer" for future surgeries, Dr. Shaheen CARED about me as his patient. I cannot recommend him highly enough & will always remain grateful to him for changing my life through this.

This procedure is an alternative to medication or traditional surgery. I have found the results of this procedure to be excellent: urination has become easy again, and sexual performance remains strong relative to my age (74). There are no follow-up medications to take, and I have noticed no significant side effects following the procedure. Cooled thermotherapy is a relatively comfortable procedure, takes about half an hour, and is performed on an out-patient basis in the doctor's office. For me it replaced the medications I had been taking that had become ineffective, and obviated the need for surgery, which requires a hospital stay and may have significant side effects. I am very appreciative that Dr. Flemming made this option available to me.

I truly appreciated how he listened to my concerns and accommodated my request. After the cancer was confirmed, he took the time to clearly explain the available treatment options, discussing both the benefits and potential concerns of each. This helped me make an informed and confident decision about my treatment. His recommendation of Dr. Yao for surgery was excellent and made a meaningful difference in my overall care and outcome. I asked my primary care doctor for a recommendation, met with that urologist, and scheduled that surgery for last July. Apparently, I was amongst the 2% of men who have this procedure and then develops a stricture. I returned to that same urologist who scheduled me for a follow-up procedure last September. It only took 2 weeks for me to realize that the second surgery still left me blocked. This led to weeks of discomfort since I was traveling at the time. When I returned from my travels I sought a 2nd opinion from an old school urologist in the PAMF system who told me that I needed still another procedure followed by a lifetime of self-catherization. He told me that it was not as bad as it sounded, but I said, "No thanks!" I left that appointment feeling very discouraged about the quality of life that I was facing. Next, I returned to the original urologist to referred me to Dr. Yamaguchi for urethroplasty. I met with her soon after for her to evaluate my situation. She agreed that urethroplasty was a good option for me. Having had 2 failed surgery I proceeded with trepidation even though I knew that full recovery could take more than a couple of months and that I would not be riding a bicycle for 6 months. I can now say that thanks to the amazing skills of Dr. Yamaguchi I have thoroughly solved my stricture problem. I have not had this flow rate since I was in my 30s. While there was some discomfort following this procedure, it has been worth every bit the sacrifice that I endured. It has been my experience with other medical experts that often such skills are accompanied by difficult personalities. That is not at all the case with Dr. Yamaguchi. She has amazing customer compassion and a very caring style.
