Don Sol is a spot in Marion that I like to go to when in town visiting my family. The service is fast, the staff is polite, and I've enjoyed the vast majority of the meals I've had here. I honestly can't remember one I didn't like. I particularly have enjoyed the meals with chorizo that I've ordered. I think it is one of the top Mexican places in Southern Illinois. read more

This place is Awesome. The staff is nice, the decor is cheerful and the chips are plentiful! The salsa is very good and they give you plenty. The food is yummy. I have been going to don sol for years. The food is still good, but tonight the place was chaos. Seated at a dirty table, rotating cast of characters as a server, slow service that was just laughably bad. No drink menus on any table, which is just one indication of absent management, as well as the poorly trained staff. The meal was an hour of awkward unpleasentness that I am in no hurry to repeat. Had dinner here on Sunday the 10th of Feb. haven't been here since they moved from the Walmart location. We had noticed that they did a beautiful job on redoing this place from the restaurant that was here before. It was a Chinese restaurant before and now it's a Mexican restaurant. They have big doors and you can see they spent a lot of money on the looks of the place. When we had come here on Sunday the food came out hot and delicious. I ordered the El Comal, and my wife the fajitas. On Valentine's Day which was 14 February, yesterday. My wife and I ordered the same thing this time, her the fajitas , and the El Comal for myself. The food came out cold and unappealing. Almost as if everything was premmade. Usually when you order fajitas, they come out sizzling on a hot plate. Not so this time. I told our server that the food was cold and he said they were short on cooks and they had several new ones there. I feel bad to give only one star to this restaurant. But I feel they should be honest and say we don't have enough cooks today so plan on your food being cold and unappealing. Then I can make the choice and leave. We probably won't come back to this establishment seeing that there are tons of Mexican restaurants around this area. So sad that you can ruin one's experience on one meal. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner at Don Sol tonight. Marco was our waiter and did an excellent job ordering our food and drinks and following up with our meal. where do I start?, I will start off by saying the service was OK, from there it goes downhill fast. Full disclosure, I am from Southern California and in town on business so I'm not expecting the greatest Mexican food in the world but for gods sake you think that it could be at least halfway decent. I ordered a combination plate which consisted of a taco, An enchilada, and of course refried beans and rice. As usual they bring chips and salsa to your table just after you're seated. The chips and salsa were not the best. The chips seemed to be freshly fried but were a bit greasy and tasted like they were out of date and they had a mealy texture, My guess is they use the corn tortillas that are getting old and near outdated or are outdated and make fried chips out of them. The salsa had almost no flavor, It was almost pointless to even have it on the table. Then came the meal, I always judge a Mexican restaurant on their rice and beans because that is the foundation. I would be willing to bet everything I have that their refried beans come out of a can, and the rice was red but had almost no flavor and was a bit dry. Mexican rice traditionally has at least onions and cumin in it, this rice tasted like it had neither. Then I tried the enchilada which was a complete nightmare, holy Montezuma Batman, it is the worst enchilada I ever had in my life!.The tortilla was barely Fried if at all, the red sauce it had on it was flavorless as was the meat filling inside. The taco was a complete embarrassment to the country of Mexico. It was a corn tortilla straight out of a bag filled with ground beef, lettuce and a white cheese that may have been jack cheese but again it had no flavor. in the beginning I said the service was OK but as the waiter was taking my order I said I would like my enchilada to have shredded beef and his response was OK beef. At that point was his opportunity to admit to me that they did not have shredded beef and they only had ground beef that had absolutely no flavor or seasoning. If this is what eating Mexican food in the Midwest is like, I wouldn't even bother. I have tried Mexican food and other Midwestern states and have always been disappointed so this will be the last time. I feel sorry for the people that live around here and think this is decent Mexican food because as I look out of my hotel window I noticed that this place is packed at night and this is during a pandemic. I think the people of Marion would be better off getting Mexican recipes online and trying to make it themselves, any attempt would be far better than this slop. read more

This restaurant has went down hill to the point of NO RETURN. We used to come here at least once a week, once they moved to the new location the food and service has been absolutely horrible. We have came 6 times since they moved and today was the last straw I wouldn't never ever step food in this dump again. I've tried the new location twice and have not had a good experience either time. The restaurant looks great, very nice renovation from the previous Asian restaurant. I will say it is confusing when you walk in as people are paying at the same counter you check in. Unfortunately, the acoustics here are horrible. It is extremely loud, to the point that you can't hear someone speaking at your table. Also, although I liked the food at the previous location, the food quality here isn't the same. The chips are burned, the salsa tasted like pizza sauce (maybe too much oregano), and the food is warm, at best. I recommend the Carbondale location for a better experience. This restaurant is terrible. Shrimp was extremely over cooked to the point of being not edible. Service terrible. They served our meals without utensils on the table. When we asked for utensils it took over 5 to 10 minutes and then we were brought plastic forks and knives. Hard to eat a steak with that. We asked for shredded cheese with one of the meals and the waiter brought a bowl of melted cheese. Then I ordered a strawberry daiquiris and never actually got it. I was given the bill with the daiquiri. When I waited another 10 minutes for the waiter to return so he could take it off the bill he brought the daiquiri. We had been done eating for over 15 minutes and were ready to leave. He was told to take it back at that point. It's unfortunate that I can't give this place zero stars. read more

I have to say that the place is very nice! In the other reviews, they mentioned that it was renovated from a Chinese restaurant and I definitely can not see the remnants of a Chinese restaurant. I feel like I was transported to Mexico once I stepped inside. Our server, Miguel, was the best server we have ever had. He made sure that we were happy. I noticed he was very diligent with his service and I appreciated all the efforts he made. I ordered the make your own dinner platter with a burrito, taco, rice, and beans. The portions were pretty small for around $10 including tax. I ordered them both with steak but when I was eating I found pieces of white meat. I was disappointed but it wasn't Miguel's fault so I didn't complain. Another review mentioned the chips were burnt and the salsa was like pizza sauce but I think they improved because the chips were fantastic and the salsa tasted like normal salsa. read more
