I love Don Pollo! I seem to live really close to one every time I move Their Peruvian chicken is just sooo tasty and you can smell just how good it tastes from the moment you step through the door. The staff greeted me when I walked in and took my order right away. I didn't have to wait long for my order. I ordered their Half chicken with two sides. My two sides were Chaufa rice and plantains! While the sides were really good, The star of the show, without a doubt, is their Peruvian chicken. Marinated to perfection with a blend of Peruvian spices and slow-roasted to achieve that golden, crispy skin while keeping the meat juicy and flavorful. Portion sizes are generous! I ate this meal for dinner and then lunch the next day! This location also has parking right out front and you can sit inside to eat if you want. They have small tables that are minimally decorated. At first I was very reluctant to go in because of all of the vagrants congregating and yelling in front of the restaurant. I waited about 15 minutes for the festivities to calm down but eventually I just got out of my car and scurried into the restaurant hoping not to be accosted. I was pleased to be greeted by a pleasant young man who took my order. He said it would be about 10 to 15 minutes before the order would be ready. True to his word the order was ready at about 12 minutes in. I took the food home and I was absolutely delighted at the result. I ordered Pollo Soltado and it was prepared perfectly. I asked for the potatoes to be packed separately and they did so which I appreciated. I'm not a food critic but I've had this dish at many, many restaurants and this was definitely in the top 25%. I was in the area with a friend and wanted to grab something to eat. They brought me here and mentioned it was Peruvian, so that piqued my interest. The first thing I did was look on Yelp for their rating - I was so relieved to see that it was 4 stars out of 5 (made me feel more comfortable in ordering). As we entered the business, the first thing you see (right in front of you) is a case with lots of drinks (juices, sodas and water). To the right of that is the counter where the cashier will take your order and behind them is the kitchen. On this visit I ordered a meal - 1/4 Dark Chicken with 2 sides. They also offer bigger portions of the chicken, Soup & Salad and Specialty Dishes. For my 2 sides I got Plantains and Rice. The Rice is normally served with Beans, but I opted out from having the beans. The chicken was cooked perfectly as I remember enjoying the pieces as I ate; The rice was was cooked great (shelly) and the plantains were plentiful and made right. Other sides I would love to try is their Yuca, Potato Salad or Mashed Potatoes, French Fries, Mac & Cheese and Corn Pico (they have other sides in addition to what I listed). The price I paid total, for 1/4 chicken, 2 sides and a drink, was very affordable and they gave a good enough portion of the items as well. I would love to come back and try more stuff, maybe even one of their desserts (their menu shows 4 with Tres Leches being one of them). There are several tables and chairs available to sit on and eat at, but you can do carry-out too. They do have 2 restrooms in the back (one for female, the other for male - only for one person each). "It was fine" my wife said when I asked for her input for this review. We both had quarter white meat with two sides. She had the fried rice and salad and I had the mashed potatoes and salad. You can get any kind of dressing you want as long as it is the one they serve. The mashed potatoes were outstanding with a hint of garlic. The chicken was average, but a little dry and flavorless. I ordered mashed potatoes and mac and cheese as my sides, they do not skimp on sides here... the staff filled my takeout box to the brim. The mashed potatoes were decent... but lacked flavor, I wish it came with some type of gravy drizzled over to add some flavor. The mac and cheese was okay... a little watery though -_- I was given two TINY complimentary containers of sauce, one was a white sauce and one was a green sauce... the white sauce tasted like bland mayonnaise and the green sauce tasted like slightly spicy mayonnaise. I prefer the green sauce over the white sauce, but I wish they gave you more since the chicken really needed the added flavor :( For $8 for the portion of food you get is a steal. Yes... the food is a little bland here, so as long as you have some hot sauce, gravy, etc. ready at home I would recommend this spot. I would come here again if I am in the area. Don Pollo is located in a shopping center off Veirs Mill Road, it shares a huge parking lot with multiple retailers so parking should not be an issue. We choose the fried rice and yuca fries. It also came with two sauces (green sauce and yellow sauce). The green sauce is a bit spicy and the yellow sauce is creamy. I like to dip my chicken in a mixture of the two sauces! For $20 it was worth it. The portions were big and you get the most for your money! For a party of 3 we still had leftovers so this is perfect for 4 people. The chicken was cooked well. (Comes with 2 dark meat and 2 white meat). The yuca fries are deliciously crispy. The accompanying sauces - especially a yellow one - worked really well with chicken. I wish the chicken had even smoke flavor but this is a fine rendition of a signature dish in the DC area. This location isn't as fancy as the newer Gaither Rd one, but this is far more convenient for us. The chicken is as delicious as we remember. Tender, salty, yumminess. I picked up carry out from here earlier today and wow was it amazing!! This is possibly the best Peruvian chicken I've had in the area. My favorite is Super Chicken in Vienna but now that I'm working from home, it's too far of a commute. The portions at Don Pollo are really generous! The food was fresh, and the chicken was really flavorful. I'm not a fan of Sardis or Crisp n Juicy because I think they're dry, lack flavor and just don't taste that clean. I'd prefer this any day! They have a nice variety of sides too! Definitely something to please everyone. Also, they had a nice system going to keep people away from each other during the pandemic and all employees were wearing masks, avoiding any kind of direct contact. I used to eat here because the chicken was decent and they were pretty close to my house. However, don Pollo has become too expensive. I used to get 1/2 chicken w/ 2 sides for about $13. Went to their site today and it was $17 and that didn't mention the sides but I assume they were included.. I'll pass at that price and make my own chicken at home. El Pollo Rico has the best chicken in the region in my opinion and they have a higher rating than Don Pollo on Yelp. The 1/2 chicken and sides is way less and they have bigger pieces and better chicken. Don Pollo is a little closer to me but I'll now drive the extra few min and go to El Pollo Rico instead. Can't no longer afford Don Pollo 2-3 times a week for lunch. read more

Insanely delicious! We were in the area for a family drive (what else are you going to do during COVID?) when we smelled this AMAZING smell of roasting chicken coming from some restaurant nearby. We turned around and searched and guessed that it was coming from this restaurant, which turns out to be a local chain that we had never tried. We ordered online and hung out in the parking lot until it was ready. We got a full chicken and two sides, which was plenty for us. The five stars are for the chicken--it was the best chicken we have had in a VERY long time from a restaurant! We also got coleslaw (5 stars) and rice and beans (2 stars--needs more seasoning). But don pollo does not disappoint. They have enough chickens on the charcoal spit to feed all of their hungry patrons. Flavorful juicy chicken. The fried yuca are so Delicious. I bring extra home and warm them to extra crispy and hot in a 400 degree oven on cookie sheets. Always a crowd pleaser. Great client service. My chicken cravings have definitely been satisfied after coming here! Don Pollo offers superb Peruvian chicken at a pocket-friendly price. Where it's located may seem a little sketchy, but if you can look past that fact you'll be in for a treat. The chicken I got was delightfully crispy on the outside (you've got to admit that the skin is probably the best part!), and juicy on the inside. It's the type of chicken you want to eat until nothing is left but the bare bones. The rich, savory flavor is unmatched by some of the other chicken places in the area. The two sides I got were the yuca and plantains. The yuca here was done right. It was cooked to perfection with a soft interior and crispy exterior. They're kinda like french fries, only WAY better. The plantains were sweet and filling -- it's the best side to end with because it'll balance out with the rest of the savory flavors in your meal. As for the sauces, I couldn't decide on which one I liked better. The green sauce had a fresh, garden-y taste with a slight kick to it. The yellow-ish one was creamier and smoother in texture.
