Decently priced, honest-to-gods Mexican food straight outta SoCal. Anyone from LA will be grateful for the food here, especially in Portland where $1.50 street food tacos go for double price because "organic" and "sustainable" have become overused punchlines by (some) restaurants to charge you more for the same. They were nice enough to let me try the al pastor and carnitas for free when I asked them which one was better. (They were both great!) The only downside is that they're all the way out in Gresham. I found it! I have been looking for a San Diego style Mexican restaurant since moving to Portland several years ago and I have finally found it. The carne asada burrito did not come with rice and beans, as is popular here in Portland, but strictly steak, pico de gallo, and guacamole. Delicious! Also tried the beans, which were delicious, and the al pastor tacos, which were seasoned perfectly. Burritos top out at $4 and tacos at $2, a very good price for what you get. Portion sizes are above average, though not excessive. Restaurant was clean and well kept for a taco shop and the staff was friendly. Definitely looking forward to my next visit. read more

I legitimately eat here 2-3 times every week. My SO and I get 2 burritos and 4 potato tacos for $12 and we go into taco comas every time. The service is ooooookay, but the rewards card kinda makes up for it (make sure to ask for one! They won't give you one otherwise) Personally, I like the breakfast burritos at Rico Taco more, but the $1 potato tacos make this place worth the trip! read more

The ground beef tacos are just simply perfect....homemade crispy shells of course. Just LOVE the specials...please don't ever take them away! In fact..I suggest adding a six dollar special with a few more extras :) three taco Supremes and a pop for example. One note would be to keep the dining room cleaner. I came here lurking for a new 'defacto' mexican fast food joint and found this place after two other places closer to my house were closed (temporary power outage) I ordered the chicken burrito, shrimp burrito and chicken nachos. I wished I ordered a steak burrito to try it out as well. pros: Food tastes great, Their chunky salsa is excellent, their prices are reasonable for the most part. The chips were nice and thick which gave a great crunch while eating and had great coverage. The other hot sauces were flavored well and definitely had a nice kick too. cons: there is no 'super burrito' which meant I had to modify my orders to the tune of 2-3 dollars per item to deck out the burritos the way I like them (with cheese, pico de gallo, cilantro, avocado or guacamole, and had to add some things to some and other things to other burritos to get what I wanted) that chunky salsa I mentioned above was only available 'to-go' upon request, meaning I had to get a plastic ramekin and lid for it - I wanted more of them, but figured I would give their other sauces which were already prepackaged a good try as well. (they have 3 other more thinner hot sauces). Needless to say, I got home and wished I got more of that chunky salsa (that was my fault for not speaking up), they should have the chunky one also prepackaged too! Biggest faux pas: my shrimp burrito felt skimpy on the shrimp as it had all of the meat pushed over towards one side of the burrito (and don't get me wrong, that side tasted great! BUT) the other side was devoid of shrimp. I know that was a bit of a wall of text for a restaurant that gave me 4/5 stars, but I would have probably ranked it at a full 5/5 if those things I mentioned were better. I have been wanting to try Chuy's, and after reading rave yelpers reviews I was compelled. Huge menu with combo plates, burritos, tacos, taquetos, Enchiladas, quesadillas, tostadas, tortas, sopes, chimichangas, breakfast burritos and plates, etc. Ala cart these items range from $2.00 to $4.00! (not a misprint) Excellent salsa bar with home made habanero hot, roasted pepper hot, medium, mild (green), and avocado sauce with tiny bits of jalapeno. Also at the salsa bar there is the pickled carrots, onion, jalapeno appetizers plus raw radish and cucumber. All gratis I had the carnitas plate. It was a little different than I was used to, but still good. Typically the pork is cut into cubes or shreds, then fried in lard. Here it was shreds, flattened and grilled. You get a generous portion of meat, 4 warm and soft flour or corn tortillas, pico de gallo, lettuce, guacamole, refried beans (pinto or black) and rice. The beans are excellent. (of course they are, they're cooked with lard). Traditional and tasty yes, healthy no. It was $6.70 I washed it down with a Mexican Coke (cane sugar, not high fructose corn syrup). They also have horchata, pineapple, and other fruit drinks that go well with Mexican food. The only very small con is that the food cools faster on the Styrofoam plates than it would on oven heated, but that keeps Chuy from charging you a couple more bucks a plate. Overall a very friendly family ran, clean, inexpensive gem of a restaurant. Do yourself a favor and try Chuy's. It will be your new destination in the Gresham area for very good Mexican food. read more

I was in Gresham today so I "instinctively" searched on my Yelp app for tacos in Gresham. All right, it listed Chuy's Taco Shop as #1, and I was immediately on my way there. It's located at the Gresham Town Fair Shopping Center, so it was really easy to find. Chuy's is very clean and tidy, and has good prices ($2.00 tacos). I got two tacos: al pastor and carne asada. They were pretty big, with a generous amount of meat in them, and the ingredients looked good. Personally, I think maybe the al pastor could have used a bit more seasoning while marinating because it didn't seem to have much of the al pastor-like smokey spiciness that distinguishes al pastor. Still, it tasted OK, and Chuy's has free wifi too. . .so, for "good sized" $2.00 tacos, I have no complaints. read more

We have been eating here since 2010 and have not one time been disappointed in the food. We missed them for a year when the old chain closed and the current owner worked to buy and open the new restaurant Chuy's. The food is plentiful and tasteful not to mention always the freshest in town. Having been raised in El Paso and San Diego I know Mexican food and this is the real deal. The staff is like family always waiting for you with a smile. They don't even mind this old blind guy taking forever trying to decide which treat to have for the day. If in Gresham and hungry this should be your first choice. You'll never be disappointed. read more

I really don't get it. We went to this place for dinner since we were in the area and they consistently get good ratings here (over 170 reviews with a 4 star average at the time I'm writing this). We walked up, looked at the menu for literally a minute and went to the counter to order. In that short time span, the girls behind the counter started to have a conversation and completely ignored us waiting to order. My girlfriend ordered a shredded chicken quesadilla and I ordered a beef burrito without lettuce. My burrito was...beef? I mean, sure I guess it could be beef, but it didn't look like beef or taste like beef. It was such a low quality meat that it was worse than ground chuck. There were also random bits of onion, tomato, and what may or may have also been beef in my burrito (none of which it was supposed to have). I managed to eat 3/4 of the burrito since I was hungry, but this was absolutely disgusting in every sense of the word. I get that people want a cheap place to eat, but Taco Bell serves better Mexican food than whatever this was. The habanero sauce/salsa was a weird creamsicle color and was the consistency of a oily water. For my girlfriend's quesadilla, it arrived wet. Like the chicken has been sitting in its own juices for awhile and was scooped into what vaguely resembled a quesadilla. There's an amazing Mexican place not far away in Wood Village. Pay the extra money and go the extra distance there instead. I've never felt physically sick immediately after finishing my meal at a restaurant until now. read more

I wasn't expecting a five-star restaurant by any means when I came to Chuys . But I'm here to tell you that as my first experience which seems like a pretty average experience from what I saw this place is actually a pretty solid four star dine in or take out place. Chuys is very family oriented as you can tell by all the babysitting going on, probably most people that work there are related. I will be back. I've tried many things on the menu and would like to try more. Finally got around to trying this New Mexican restaurant close to my house. Saw that it opened awhile ago just forgot to try it. But i finally remembered today. I went in and was instantly greeted by a young girl who helped me decide what to get. She got my order right away and even gave me a stamp card for a free burrito after ten purchases. Awesome! It only took about 5 minutes maybe not even that long to get my order. I saw the cook in the back drop my fresh tortilla in the fryer as soon as she got my order. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. I got a beef taco and a chicken enchilada. YUM! The place seems new which I know it is so I don't mind that vibe. The food was awesome! The al pastor burrito is good, but it had a little too much onion for my taste but the chicken had awesome flavor. The prices at this shop are insane. The are great for someone on a budget. I come here so often I think they might know me now. However they can't ever guess my order because I love to try everything and I've yet to be disappointed. Chile verde: amazing. Carnitas: omnomnom. Lengua: fugheddaboutit. Breakfast burritos: asombroso. Churros: yes please! So much good stuff! And the prices! So. Cheap. There's always cute little kids running around in there (belonging to employees) and they usually have sports on the TVs (or soap operas). The staff is super friendly. I only wish they would get a little better with their cooking timing. Sometimes we get our meal staggered so either someone is waiting or something is kinda cold. It's worth waiting for and still delicious cold so I don't really ever get bent out of shape there. They do stamp cards and I have one filled already...case closed. read more

FORMERLY CHUY'S for those who have been around Gresham for a bit. Food quality seems to have slumped quite a bit since it was Chuy's, I get the feeling nearly everything is canned. I apologize if they make their beans from scratch but if that flavorless gray mush is fresh made then they are using Old El Paso as their gold standard recipe. the shredded meats, carnitas and chicken, get consistently poor reviews...the ground beef too. I have had bad experiences with all three as flavorless, boiled and/or steam-tabled to death by the end of the work day. my late weekday shredded chicken burrito had picked up a funk from the kitchen, mental note don't come late in the day, skip the rice, no flavor there either. Skip the guacamole, it's as canned as it gets and involves some significant filler like sour cream. (I've worked at a taco shop back in the day and it came in a can and got mixed 50/50 with s.c.) I have gone to a half dozen Mexican restaurants in the gresham/fairview area and the inconsistency of the food (I assume depending on who is working the griddle) seems to plague this type of food in general. Back to Don Ladis - low marks on flavor and heat on their salsas and flavor/spice in general for Don Ladis...oddly their salsa bar feature quite a few rather boldly colored yet very bland offerings - similar salsas might bring a tear to your eye at other places. read the reviews and find some consistent entrees, maybe the breakfast burrito, carne asada rolled tacos and, ummm, I know that's a short list but I can only recommend come early, take it to go and hit it with proper hot sauce like Valentina or Tapatio at home. read more
