The first time we ate at Taqueria Mi Jalisco was August 2023 when we were vacationing (living in the East Bay at that time) after a friend's wedding in Vancouver. That first visit I tried the nachos, which is one of two of my favorite dishes at any taqueria. The nachos were absolutely divine and I noted that the next time I wanted to try their chile relleno, which is my second favorite dish. I finally got to try their chile relleno earlier this month as a local! We were on a chasing waterfalls tour for my birthday and stopped here for lunch on the way back home. Both visits were fantastic with delicious food, warm and friendly service, and a festive and cozy vibe. We were running errands in the area and wanted to try someplace new. The spot had solid reviews and we were convinced. We ordered the steak ranchero special of the day, crispy chicken taco, and chicken flautas and everything was SO good. We were so full but based on all the entrees being delicious we ordered churros. My partner was supposed to go in and only order 1 flavor but he ended up ordering every flavor they had. I think 4-5. Everything was delicious. Great food as always, when coming to an authentic Mexican restaurant... No matter if the restaurants are competing or not they're always making bomb homemade food so you can't go wrong anywhere you go and it says authentic. I got a super wet burrito, which was as big as my forearm almost in bigger than any other super burrito I've ever had elsewhere. We ate an early weeknight dinner here. There was no wait and only one other table occupied. We had to order and pay for our food at the counter then it was brought to us, and that made it difficult to order more tortillas, or anything really with out a new order being placed. The service was lacking, the employees seem bored and not attentive to the customers. The food was ok. The salsas were lacking of flavor and heat. We ordered a carnitas soft taco and asada plate. The carnitas was very tasty, but the stake was flavorless and cut into big pieces that it was difficult to eat. Overall the food was ok. Not bad but not memorable either. This Lady Longhorn loves the food here! I had the Fajitas, and loved them. They were RIGHT and that's sayin' a lot in this town! You may know that fajitas were invented by caballeros on the cattle drives and ranches in Texas, based on the scraps, often including skirt steak, tough but tasty, left them by the trail bosses. They learned to marinate and char grill thin strips over wild mesquite to create a super tasty and simple hand food when combined with a tortilla and charra beans. It's actually an original TexMex concoction, first sold at a cart, then at Escalante's, Mama Ninfa's, and, eventually, every mall and airport food cart on both sides of the border. Thing is, the fajitas in Portland generally SUCK. I've gotten lots of sirloin (marinated of not, but not half as tasty as skirt). I've gotten wild concoctions, some more like guisados, in a frickin' TOMATO SAUCE (the HOrror!). I've never once, until now, gotten thin cut strips of marinated skirt with peppers and onions, wonderfully charred, sizzling on an iron plate. Now I have, and I got it here. Flavors are good, sides good, not great, the frijoles refrescos a bit soupy, everything a bit shallow in flavor and salt. Would benefit from the old TexMex trick of soy sauce. Trust me. Really. Free chips and salsa! Good salsas, again, not great, a bit thin, a bit less spicy than I like, but I know you Portlanders are all allergic to spicy, so... ;) Comparing it to the old standby's of Los Hermanos Ochoas and De Leon's... less expensive by far, just a bit less flavor, but excellent and friendly service and did I mention, chips and salsa INCLUDED?! That's the way we did it in TX, but it seems here in PDX, a bunch of masa, tomatoes, tomatillos, onions, cilantro, and jalapenos must be just too expensive for most. As Taquerias go, this one has made me feel the most happy in both my head and mouth. Oh, and the bathroom was very nice and very clean (and gender-Free). So, my butt was happy too. Next time you visit the Gresham Saturday Market, Old Gresham, Tsuru Park or Gresham City Park for little league... head here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They do have a nice patio, though construction on City Hall (?) right now is spoiling the vibe on weekdays, but... this too shall pass. See my video clip. This is the BEST authentic Mexican food you have been dreaming of! YES, it is out there! Oh my goodness. Fresh, really tasty, flavorful, reasonably priced, filled with lots of homemade sauces, not dry like the food of many Mexican eateries! I was at swim lessons with my daughter and her family across the street at Gresham High School and we saw this place so we went for lunch. Sooo glad we did! The fish tacos were so full of fish and other spices and items and so filling! Most fish tacos have barely anything on them. First came the chips with 3 sauces, red, green and sour cream with jalapenos blended in (my favorite, almosted tasted like a spicy queso). Mark had a crisp Lengua Taco and steak plate, carne asada and grilled onions. I had the Friday special enchilada and tamal. Al Pastor for enchilada and chicken in the tamal. Everything was fresh and tasty. Refried Beans were smoothe and creamy, and spanish rice was moist. Both yummy. Also came with small salad with tomato slice and grated cheese. My breakfast burrito was absolutely disgusting. I've never in my 22 years, have had a gross breakfast burrito!!! I got bacon and most of the meat was pure white ! All fat! If you don't have bacon just say that! don't wast my money and ruin my stomach! I had to open it & pick out all the fat & nasty raw bacon but it was still gross. Like 4 Potato's were hard as hell! Her chosen protein was pork pastor Came out super fast and is super huge. Very flavorful. Probably enough for two I tried the carne asada plate. Thin sliced beef, rice, refried beans, scallions Beef is super thin, can taste the char. Beans and rice are fine. Scallions looked good. Hard to cut. Using plastic silverware 'due to COVID, I assume.' Cutting steak was a little awkward. You get free chips with 3 small containers of sauce. One was a hot red, one was sour cream and jalapeño, the last was a weird avocado salsa hybrid, I think. Not a fan of that one. We overall enjoyed our meal. Service was good. I ordered the 2 taco plate which cane with a side of refried beans and mexican rice. I also ordered 1 shrimp ceviche and 1 extra taco of tripa. My group ordered a Torta and Beef burrito as well. The Tacos; The two beef tacos advertised as Asada which traditionally means BBq'd or cooked over fire. Were a bit soggy and flavorless, had no fire taste and almost a chewy texture. The rice had the perfect texture, nice fluffy, semi firm. The beans had a good consistency not too liquidy and came with a bit of cheese on top. Sadly both of these sides had very little flavoring I wouldn't be able to tell the difference from can refried beans. The rice had no traditional mexican spices nor flavoring. The Shrimp Ceviche; The ceviche was basically tomato, onion, cilantro, cooked shrimp, with a side of avocado. This basically tasted like a pico de gallo, no flavoring, no spice, lacked lime and the shrimp were over boiled. The Tripa Taco; They cooked the tripa how I like it, the taco was decent and crispy. Basically trips, cilantro, and a green sauce. The salsas; I asked for all the Salsas they offered so i can taste them, they brought a green avocado, a red tomato, and another red one that they said was their signature spiciest one. The avocado salsa was decent but watery. The red was texmex no spiciness. Their signature spice sauce tasted like tapatio mixed with another red sauce. Overall: I wouldn't recommend this restaurant as an authentic mexican eatery. If you're a first timer for Mexican food this could ruin your experience. This experience left me hungry for flavor and disappointed. The lack of flavor really did it for me. Food prices are not worth the quality or taste. My mom always told me, "if you walk into a restaurant and your nose don't get filled up with amazing authentic food smells and cooking then walk your but right out that restaurant". I have eaten Mexican food in the Mexican states of Baja California Norte/Sur, Sonora, and Quintana Roo, and México City, I can say the cooking here is authentically Mexican and VERY delicious. The staff were all friendly and mask-compliant. The restaurant was very clean and had a relaxing, warm, and inviting atmosphere.
