I'm a a transplant from the Mecca of Mexican food, Los Angeles. As a result; my expectations out of these small hole in the wall Mexican food joints is high. This place is terrible! It's like the Mexican folks moved north and forgot how to cook. It may sound funny to you reading but trust me you won't think so when you're strapped to your toilet as your anus turns inside out. I bought a supreme burritos with an horchata to wash it down. At a glans you get this impressive burrito roughly 14 inches and length and about 3.5 inches in diameter accompanied with your typical styrofoam cup. The horchata was fantastic! Nice and cold with the perfect concentration. This is why I decided to rate this places two stars. On to the "burrito" I ordered a supreme burrito al pastor. As the burrito is extremely moist so you have to eat it soon after receiving it or I assume it be real soggy. The burrito carries rice, bean, avocado, cabbage, tomatoes, sour cream and your choice of meat, as per their menu. My burrito was mostly rice and beans and bean juice with some soggy al pastor from a few nights ago. Never again! Lovely people but it takes more than just good customer service and tasty horchata to earn my business. read more

My buddy took me to La Herradura (the horseshoe) and it was pretty good, but I have had better and less expensive Mexican meals at many other restaurants in this and numerous other cities. Portland Mexican restaurants, like their Italian brethren, are, unfortunately, mediocre at best and this horseshoe was not exactly what I would call lucky. First off, we had to pay for chips and salsa ($2.50), which were OK, coming with a small cup of mild green salsa and a similar size cup of bean dip. For the price ($4.95), the equally small cup of guacamole we ordered was not particularly a bargain, but it was decent. So far, so average. I had recently been through a rather traumatic experience and the purpose of our lunch was to talk about what had been going on and how I was doing. The place was relatively empty, but the server kept coming to our table, asking me if I was ready to order every 3-4 minutes, interrupting our rather sensitive conversation on each occasion. She eventually tried to sway me toward the lunch specials, which I had seen on the way in and was not particularly thrilled about. Finally, I had to quickly peruse the menu and out of frustration, went with my mainstays, two Carne Asada Street Tacos ($1.60 ea) and two Cheese and Onion Enchiladas (ala carte - $2.50 ea). Each taco came on two tiny little corn tortillas with a small amount of chopped, grilled steak, along with some diced white onion and cilantro. They were adequate, but I get much more meat on two larger corn tortillas at my local taqueria for just $1.50 a piece. The enchiladas were pretty good with lots of cheese and red chili sauce, but the onions were inexplicably missing. My high school pal had a better experience, having ordered the Chili Relleno Lunch Special ($8.95), which looked delicious and, according to him, it was. The chili was massive, stuffed with gooey cheese and surrounded by a fluffy egg omelette, coming with rice and beans and not a bad deal. All in all, not bad and not great, but lunch for $30, including tip, with only water to drink seems a bit pricey for the meal we had. This is my favorite mexican in Gresham. It is very affordable, and has big portions. But most importantly, the food is great. I've become addicted to their Fajitas, whcih are made with a very tasty red sauce flavoring. I get it to go, and a single order (about $8-$9) serves 2 or 3. Love this place. The ambiance is very casual. If you order in, it will be full-service sit down, but the tables have the feel of a fast food sort of place, and there is often a TV on. I have been to this restaurant twice now, both times were less then par. I must say the service is friendly and if I was reviewing just that then I would give it more stars. When I go out to a Mexican restaurant I expect a bit of a kick, or some spice/flavor. The first time I went to Herradura I ordered a chile relleno burrito. I'm a huge fan of chile rellenos and burritos, so put them together and it should make a magical treat, right!! No, it was ok, but I expected a bit more flavor. My co-workers rave over this place so I thought, ok maybe it is just the chile relleno burrito. I went back and tried the quesadilla. I wasn't terribly hungry so I thought this would be great. OH MY! It was huge! Judging on the size it seems like a great deal, however it too was lacking in flavor. Now when I see the word QUESadilla, I think of the word QUESO which for the non spanish speaking individual means cheese. I would expect there to be lots of cheese on my QUESa "cheese" dilla. This however was lacking! I also ended up adding some bean dip and salsa just to give it more flavor. In the end I just passed it to my co-worker who will eat just about anything. So two strikes Herradura. My co-workers claim the sopa is amazing. Maybe next time I should try that. For now I'm just going to stick with my favorite taco cart on Powell. read more

I honestly cannot believe this place got a single bad review! Herradura is a GEM in the Gresham area. The menu is similar to Don Pedro's but you can taste the difference in quality. I've taken friends there - including kiddos - and they loved it. My family gets food to-go often. It's one of our top two restaurants when we don't know what to do for dinner. I typically get a wet burrito plate. Their beans are freaking delicious. We've never been unhappy with anything but I recommend the carnitas tacos or a lengua burrito. They have some simple and more American items for picky eaters. The picky little boys in my life like the bean burrito with fries. The tacos are a little spicy if you're sensitive to that. (My one year old gobbles them down while my 3 year old says they are too spicy; go figure.) read more

At least my dogs were happy. My "chicken enchiladas" were three corn tortillas stacked together folded over these giant grey chunks of dark meat hanging with skin and fat. The Chicken Fajitas were canned tomatoes, onions, and green peppers. the four small slices of chicken in there were tough and inedible. The re-fried beans were clearly reconstituted from dehydrated beans. Never again will I waste my money here. I suggest you don't either. read more

Am I insane? Totally open mind when we dined here. Total let down. I had a Chile Relleno, my coveted mex item...the item that holds the holy grail of yum-ness for me. I started with warm freshly-cooked chips with green salsa. The salsa was a bit skimpy for the amount of chips, but very tasty with its own homemade flavor. Then I got menudo. It was pretty short on stomach meat compared to what some places have. But there was a nice big chunk of foot tendon or something. The tortillas were warm, about four of them. The spice add-ons (onions, oregano, dried chiles) were plentiful. The basic broth (and there was a lot of it) was a bit lacking in richness though. It's hard to mess up menudo, so much of the menudo I've eaten in restaurants has been really good. This one was okay but not really memorable. So I'd likely look for a different Mexican restaurant another time I'm in Gresham read more

I went to school right next to this place, so it was almost a ritual to come here with friends to get the food and the free chips with dip. It's true that the staff is friendly enough, but they don't make you feel welcome and it's a small place with spanish soap operas always playing. It can get uncomfortable. However, I have always loved the food. There is definitely a few not to my taste, they put lettuce in hot things so they simply wilt, so be wary of that. However, just a normal steak or pork burrito is amazing and I love the quesadillas. The chips are great and warm, they give you green sauce and warm bean dip that's simply divine. Sitting in is a must. I have never ventured past the few items I really enjoy, but for the amount and price, it's really great. The food is OK as are the prices. The managers practices are completely illegal. The workers are not given breaks(apart from the time it takes to eat there food) and are are not paid overtime. They are also not paid for any work that they do when there shift is over (often 20 minutes after shit ends). (The boss gets away with this since it is so hard for her workers to find work elsewhere). If you just care about getting some decent food, no problem. If your concerned about the conditions of the workers(exploiting of)...the least you can do is avoid this restaurant. read more
