Unlike most places, they don't have the buffet of rotating hot food each day that most Dominican places have. As a result, the food takes a long time and is reflected in their high prices. That being said the food is still good and the service is still decent. I really go back and forth because a tres golpes was $14 which seems very high but it was good so I'm torn. Definitely not my go to but I wouldn't refuse to eat here either.

The food is ok and prices are reasonable. I usually get rice and beans with pernil or pepper steak, I also get the codfish. Frequently the pernil is dry which you can look at and see for yourself. The food is served from behind the counter and replenished from the kitchen so gives you a chance to see what you'll be getting. I'm not crazy about going there for food because despite some staff being there a long time communication has often been difficult requiring the man who seems in charge to have to translate often if you have any questions or trying to describe what you want, even with my than basic Spanish. More than likely you'll be satisfied enough to return more than once.

Rancho Mateo is huge, the place could easily accommodate hundreds of diners. The decor is great and…read morethe life music was fantastic. They also have ample parking and valet. Now, the food is a different story. There were 4 of us in the party and two out of the four entrees were disappointing. I had the carne llanera and this was by far the weakest dish out of the 4. The other plate that was ok, but not great was the churrasco montañero. The meat was not a good cut and had way too many fatty pieces. The entraña à la parrilla was by far the best of the 4. This one was well cooked and flavorful and a great cut of meat. The second one was the pechuga encebollada, this one was very good and the caramelized onions were perfectly cooked. We also had the empanada appetizer which was very good as well. The service wasn't bad, but they did get one of the orders wrong and we were half way through our dinner before the correct dish arrived. Rancho Mateo is a beautiful restaurant in a great location, but the inconsistency in the quality and flavor of the food makes it a one-and-done experience for me. There are much better options for Colombian food in the area.

We were coming back from the airport and the person we'd picked up hadn't had Colombian food in…read moremonths, so we stopped on the way south in Woodbridge. The location was packed and had a good vibe, and we only had to wait five minutes or so for a table. For a drink I got a Jugo de Lulo, a favorite of mine when I travel to Colombia, and it tasted nice, but seemed a little small compared to those I've had in other Colombian places. We ordered empanadas. My first empanada was not freshly cooked and lacked the snap in the masa that comes when it's right out of the fryer. Instead, the masa was rubbery and cool. The other empanadas and my second one were fine, so they'd unloaded an old one on us with our order. Since my wife got the Bandeja Paisa, and I knew I'd end up helping her to finish it off (the plate was typically massive) I ordered from the arepa menu and got an arepa with shrimp. It looked underwhelming on delivery as it was lacking the style and topping shown in the photo. It tasted fine, but wasn't anything special at all. The third member of our party ordered the shrimp and squid in cream, which she enjoyed. Then the staff got annoying when they tried to clear our plates away while we were still eating. We asked them to wait until we were all finished, but two minutes later we had to stop them again. They were literally trying to grab the plate in front of me while I was moving some of my wife's bandeja paisa to it. Finally, we asked for a takeout box, and they were hovering over the table waiting to clear it and actually started as I was loading the takeout box. It was as if they couldn't get us out of there fast enough. After all that, we couldn't get out of there fast enough either. FYI, be advised that tips were included in the bill even for our three-person party. It wasn't mentioned, but it was on the bill when we reviewed it before paying.
