    Cerdo de chicharron mofongo

One of my favorite Spanish foods is mofongo. And I'm always looking for a good place that makes it. Having just moved to the area I came across this place on yelp and called and placed an order. When they answered the phone, they said "hello" in a bored tone. Not the name of the restaurant. Not hello how can I help you. I asked if this was frituras and she said yes. I speak fluent Spanish and proceeded to speak to her in Spanish so it wasn't a language barrier. I asked it they had mofongo de cerdo (pork) and she told me no. That's it. Not no, but I have this instead. Just no. At this point I was extremely turned off but after asking her for 3 alternative options. She said she had chicken so I settled on that. Then she asked me In Spanish "for how much?" Now i wasn't sure what she meant by that so I asked. She then repeated the exact same phrase again. After a couple of tries I got that there were 2 size/price options. $15 or $20. I got the $15 size and went to pick. It's a regular hole in the wall Spanish restaurant with the food set out and you can select what you want through the glass if you want it Platter style. And of course they also make food to order. There were about 3 people in there employees friends whatever when I went to pick up. 2 of them were drinking a beer. No biggie. They're relaxing. And at least they had masks on during this corona crises. But again it was like I was interrupting them by entering the restaurant. The customer service is dreadful. The mofongo was good. really good. So good that a couple weeks later I'm back here now. The phone ordering process again was terrible. I asked when they were closing and she answered "soon"I asked if they had chicken mofongo. The answer was no. Then radio silence. Again after my usual questions I got that they had pork so I ordered that. I again entered and they came over after talking amongst them selves for a few minutes I told them I was picking up and had to wait a few minutes for my meal which I don't have an issue with. When it was ready she packed it up and did offer me some salsita for the top which I appreciated. I also got the bigger size this time. I havent tried it but I just have been compelled to let you know that the service is terrible and you will feel unwanted but the mofongo is really good.

Found this location on a side street with some parking. The food was amazing. Very tasteful. The staff seemed to have high spirits which makes for better service. If you do not speak spanish, soneone will help you. Overall i will return to try the steak with rice with chicken. I know it will also be epic. I purchased a lunch order with a snapple and Dominican soda for $11. Not bad. I may return again this week. Definitely next week tho.

This is a great spot to quickly pick up lunch, or stay awhile and dine at one of their many tables…read more There is a lot of space here and even when there are other customers. It doesn't feel crowded. I've been to El Viejo Fred twice and both times did not disappoint. The first time I accompanied my Dominican friend who ordered for me. The second time I was on my own, but the ladies were very helpful and we made it happen. Most of the food is behind the counter in a covered buffet-style setup. You let them know what you are interested in, beef, chicken etc, and they'll show you the offerings. You can't beat their lunch special at around $12-15. You get a giant portion of rice & meat, add on a bit of salad and you're good to go! The food is so delicious, the flavors are all there. I also had the chicken and cheese empanadas as well as beef and both tasted great, I liked the beef best it was very well seasoned. Another bonus? Tamarind juice!! Not many places have it so I'm always ecstatic when I see it on a menu. Both my friend and I really enjoyed the food we purchased from El Viejo Fred, and the friendly service we received, we will definitely be back!
