Carne Guisada
Katherine G.

I'm from New York City. We have alottt of Dominican food. But let me tell you!!! Surrender Cafe really got authentic Dominican food! I accidentally ordered take out for Carne Guisado I really wanted Pollo Guisado but to my surprise I got steak and that's okay! You know why? Because the first bite I took from this carne , it brought me back to my memories with my aunties my mother and my grandmother sitting at the dining room table eating this! I love the fact the meal comes with avocado in nyc they don't do that it's seperate! The arroz con gandules was yummy! The kidney beans were flavorful fresh and cooked to perfection! Please come here if you want a home cooked meal because that's what it gives!!

Shrimp scampi, arroz con gandules, and tostones

I chose Surrender Cafe after analyzing 4 other locations. I considered the menu, ambiance, and size of the place. I concluded that the menu and prices were very reasonable. Once my party arrived I saw that the place was just right for my group to sit comfortably. The food here was outstanding and truly authentic Puerto Rican food. Everything was delicious. Each member of my party applauded me for taking the time to suggest and research this restaurant. Although I do not live in the area, I will keep Surrender Cafe in mind when I'm in the area. My mom had pollo a la parilla while I had shrimp scampi. I'm still remembering how flavorful was my dish.

Tropical decor.

Surrender cafe was an unexpected pleasure. It doesn't look like much from the outside but walk in and you will feel like you have entered a restaurant in Puerto Rico. The decor was vibrant and the service was very welcoming and friendly. We were quickly seated and greeted with a description of the specials. The appetizer special, the 360 Platter Sampler came highly recommended so we went with that. The 360° Platter Sampler includes, alcapurrias, mini-canoas beef, sorrullitos, and your choice of two empanadas. We chose beef and chicken. Everything was DELICIOUS!! For dinner we had Pernil Asado Roast pork which was served with arroz con gandules and green salad, the Pollo Isleño Grilled chicken with onions, served with fried green plantains and salad, and the avocado salad which was recommended. Everything was very tasty! We especially enjoyed the apps and the avocado salad was to die for!!! Oh and the bathroom was SPOTLESS!!

Authentic Puerto Rican food :) I dream about this food quite often. The owners are extremely sweet and you can tell they're passionate about their restaurant. Many vegetarian options and they are delicious ! Such good service and home-y vibes. I'm so grateful this restaurant is so close to home. Go visit for some yummy food that tastes like home

Pollo Isleño Lunch

We went to lunch here for the first time. I ordered Taco Salad lunch with beef and Wifey ordered Pollo Isleño lunch with chicken sautéed in onions. They're both delicious. Lots of locals, Puerto Ricans we're eating when we came in for lunch. They have their own parking lot. Friendly serving staff. Clean and well lighted restaurant. Will try to discover other entrées next time.

Plantain Chips

My friend and I wanted to grab a quick bite. I ordered the grill chicken with onions and my friend ordered steak. We both had rice and beans for our sides. Both plates were yummy! And our server was super sweet and accommodating! Will definitely come back!

The Bistec encebollado was delicious. The steak was extremely well seasoned and was so tender and the onions just brought it home. The white rice was so flavorful that it did not even need the gravy that came with it. I could have eaten the rice plain by itself. That's how tasty it was. The plantains were fried very well and weren't too thin and crunchy. They had substance to them. I will definitely eat here again and would recommend it to all. They also have a Mexi-Rico section of the menu which is a Puerto Rican take on Mexican dishes.

Latin Port - Medium Plate

Latin Port

Stumbled across Latin Port and honestly, this place overdelivered. I ordered the arepas with cheese, and you can immediately tell these are handmade. The texture was perfect and the cheese was high quality, rich, melty, and just really satisfying. I completely dropped the ball and didn't ask for the cabbage toppings (which I later realized are supposed to pull everything together), so that's on me but even without them, they were still a win. Next up were the tostones, which came with this dipping sauce, maybe avocado-lime? I'm not entirely sure, but whatever it was, it worked. It tied the whole dish together and elevated what could've been a simple side into something memorable. Now, the real standout: the Cuban roasted chicken. This tasted like it came straight out of someone's grandmother's kitchen. Super juicy, packed with flavor, and just comforting in the best way. Easily the highlight of the entire meal. I also tried the tres leches cake for dessert, and while everything else hit, this one just didn't land for me. It wasn't bad, just lacking the flavor I was expecting. Overall, though, Latin Port is absolutely worth it. If you're looking for flavorful, home-style food that feels like it's made with care, this spot delivers!

The thing I love about this spot is they have a little bit of everything. They have dishes from different countries including Peru, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brazil, and more. I decided to get a small platter of stewed chicken and beef with rice, beans, and plantains. For dessert, I just had to grab a slice of tres leches cake. The server who prepared my platter was very nice and loaded my container with food. I got my food to go, but there is seating here if you'd like to dine in. They also have some outdoor seating. When I got home, I truly enjoyed my food. I will definitely be back here.

Highlights from our tasting included slow-roasted pork, yellow rice with pigeon peas, vegan alcapurria, and both classic and Beyond Beef empanadas. The flavors were rich, authentic, with a growing vegan menu. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the menu is packed with must-try dishes. Open March-December, Wednesday-Sunday, 12-7 PM. While visiting Jersey I passed the amusement park several times but never noticed this restaurant…read more Can you say delicious? I sure can especially when I took the first bite of my perfectly spiced and cooked fried pork chop it was to die for. I ordered a side order of tostones, that were right out of the frying pan (I have to be honest I could have eaten 16 of them lol). Other parties in group ordered mofongo with shrimp and as a starter an Alcapurria from the appetizer menu and I am sorry I can't recall what the other item was she enjoyed them (she doesn't know how to share so I can't chime in on how it tasted. The shrimp in the mofongo was outstanding but the mofongo seemed to be lacking enough garlic to kick up the flavor that I know mofongo normally has. Pollo Guisado was also served, it was hearty, savory and the meat was very tender (surely enough food to make this two meals). There aren't many seats (two tables outside) and a small area to eat by the counter so be aware especially during warmer months that the availability to accommodate you for a sit down meal might be a challenge but I would eat in my car knowing that the meal is as good as it was. The staff were beyond friendly and efficient....everything was bought out to us in a very timely manner. If you like Spanish please give Mambo Nando's a try.

Recently, we discovered that there's a much larger part of the restaurant in the back, accessible through the alley off the main street via the rear parking lot. The space is decorated with Peruvian art and vibrant colors. To start, we ordered anticuchos (grilled beef heart skewers). The marinade is packed with delicious. I honestly thought I was eating steak. I ordered the chupe de camarones (shrimp chowder soup). I cannot stress enough how big this bowl of soup is. They do not skimp on the shrimp! It's probably one of the best chupes I've ever had. I ended up taking a large container of it home. Likewise, my partner ordered the chaufa mixto (Peruvian fried rice with chicken, steak, and shrimp). Always ask for the green sauce, absolutely delicious! Just like with my soup, he also had plenty of leftovers. To wash it all down, we ordered chicha (a purple corn drink), which was so good. This place is known for its rotisserie chicken, so we ordered a half chicken to go for the following day. I understand why it's everyone's go-to here, juicy and flavorful. We don't live nearby, but the food, friendly service, and generous portions of delicious dishes make it well worth the trip.
