Was driving through and decided to give place a try. The best way I can describe this is that they serve the highest quality mediocre Mexican food, if that makes any sense. P.S You can definitely ask for a mild salsa for the chips and salsa they give you in the beginning! Dinner here last night was alright. I found the salsa to be very watery, which I thought was strange, and it was a tomato pasty flavor for the chips. I also found the enchilada's red sauce to be too sweet for me and didn't really eat much. However, the refried beans are very delicious and are super appetizing and appealing to look at and eat. Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food given. I do wish the enchilada came with steak as the beef in the enchiladas felt very dry for me and it gets plain to eat after a few bites. I finally got around to trying Don Chato this week, and I'm glad I did. It's one of those spots I've driven past a bunch of times and kept telling myself, "I need to stop in there." Solid 4 stars from me. I went pretty hungry, so I ordered the carne asada plate and added a couple tacos because I couldn't decide. No regrets. The carne asada was super flavorful and tender -- not chewy or dry -- and it had that fresh-off-the-grill taste. The portions were generous without feeling ridiculous, and I definitely left full (with zero room for dessert). The salsa had just the right amount of heat -- enough to make it interesting but not so spicy that you're reaching for your drink every two seconds. It was a little busy when I went, so we waited a bit longer than expected, but you could tell everything was being made fresh. The staff was really friendly and had that relaxed, neighborhood vibe. It didn't feel rushed, which I actually appreciated. If I had to nitpick, the dining area could use a little updating, and the wait time might test your patience if you're in a hurry. Things have gone down hill the service is bad with a few millennials Who need more customer service friendly training. They barely talk. Not friendly at all. When seated we didn't get water. Never got asked what we wanted to drink. They forgot my salad. The chile verde tastes like they poured a can of las palmas green sauce over it so we ordered taquitos instead and the chicken tasted spoiled I spit it into the plate. Asked the waitress if she could give me my salad to go and she didn't even say sorry for forgetting about it. They never asked if we were celebrating an occasion like most restaurants do. They ended up closing, but only because the owner decided to retire. Jump ahead to 2012 I move to Palmdale, and low and behold my family discovers Don Chato's with few and not important differences, a mirror image of the awesome restaurant in LA. I really didnt know who our actual waitress was. The host was the only one who checked on us, but took awhile. Now the drinks was not bad and the actual flavor of the food was pretty good but the price for the fajitas was ROBBERY, it say " shrimp,steak and chicken," which I did, but it was a portion for a kid or someone on a diet. So we happen to be i town to visit our daughter and her bf. Hubby was craving Mexican food so we happen to find this place on Yelp and decided to come here for lunch on Friday. So we walk into the place and we were greeted by a very friendly hostess with the most. We asked to look at the bar and the dining area and she allowed us to walk down the dining area to see what it look like. The bar is closed off to the right when you walk in and the dining room is broken up to the left into cute little booths. The decor is super cute, detailed and makes you experience like you're there in Mexico. We all order drinks and then we ordered different dishes. Hubby got the enchilada plate no beans rice red sauce. Daughter got a quesadilla & added shrimp to it (which she said was bomb for her). I got the chicken mole no beans rice only and the daughters bf got 3 Carnita Asada tacos. Everything was super tasty and nice and hot. The nice thing is when you sit down they serve you hot warm chips and homemade salsa. The staff there is very attentive every time they walk by they always look down at your table to see if they can clear something away, to get you another drink, to refill chips salsa or even water. The bartender went out of his way to put the next rount of beer on ice to make sure that we had the coldest drinks possible. We will definitely be back here it was Definitely a great Mexican place with so many choices of foods that or outside the norm of just tacos, quesadillas, burritos and combo plates. OK so I have been coming to Don Chato's for years! Typically I'm stuck with chips salsa guacamole and a vegetarian enchilada. However I'm vegan - so defaulting to the "vegetarian option" is one of my biggest pet peeve's. Finally a vegan option at a Mexican restaurant that isn't a plane salad!!! I'm so excited to say this was one of the yummiest entrées I've gotten in general never mind at a Mexican restaurant. It's typical that at Mexican restaurants the beans and rice are cooked in pork lard so limited options for a vegan! Not only was this entree delicious but it was also very healthy. Lightly steamed broccoli, chickpeas, black beans, quinoa, corn, avocado and cactus. The dressing was a light Italian. I wish I order a second one for lunch the next day! Don Chato has 2 locations, Acton and Palmdale. They have changed their name a few times over the years, but still the same family run business. I try to frequent here every few weeks specifically for the tampiqueña. Not like any mexican restaurant! Their service is excellent and food is excellent. The Dining room is cozy and bar inviting. Oh yeah... and don't forget the Cadillac, they know what their doing. Rather I stop in Acton or Palmdale on my drive through, the recipes and quality is the same. Our first time here and finally my sister and I came here and it's a nice restaurant and the ambiance was pleasant. The service was great and the food did not disappoint. I ordered the Chile relleno with a hard shell beef taco it came with soup or salad and I had the albóndiga soup and it was delicious. My Chile relleno was delicious loaded with cheese and the rice and beans were also flavorful. My sister ordered the shrimp Al mojo de ajo. And the plate had nice jumbo shrimp and plentiful at least 10 of them. She really liked it also came with rice and beans and soup or salad and she got the salad. The prices are great as well .
