Tony D's Pizza - Drunken Grandma Pie

***3 1/2 stars***…read more Maybe it lost something in transit or I didn't get the right pie, but I wasn't blown away by this place. I've had Tony D's on my list for a while, knowing it had a solid reputation amongst the North Jersey Italians (and what better demo to have it from?). Yesterday was a perfect opportunity to order/grab some pizza and bring it over to my top-tier chum in nearby Montclair for lunch. I didn't do a ton of recon so maybe there was a more obvious/modern method to ordering, but from what I could tell, this place was pretty old school and I just picked up the phone and called over - honestly can't remember the last time I did that, but it brought a nice whiff of nostalgia for me after years of ordering on apps. Didn't realize that Tony D's is literally right around the corner from my BFF Cloverleaf, so the location is pretty convenient if you're in the area. The parking in Caldwell can be pretty annoying, and even though I'm sure I could have rolled the dice I paid a little less than a dollar to park up the street further into a residential neighborhood. Given that Tony D's is exclusively delivery/pickup joint, I think they should pay for the spots right in front as a courtesy to their customers coming in and out; maybe they do and I missed it but if not... Anyway. The guy behind the counter was VERY nice/friendly, and even though I was a few minutes early based on the estimated ETA off my phone call, the pizza literally had just come out of the oven and was ready to rock. From that vantage point, top-notch service. The specific pie that seemed to be their go-to was the Drunken Grandma, which is usually one of my favorites (vodka sauce on pizza should be much more prevalent in my opinion) but I wasn't crazy about the chunks of tomato on it. In hindsight, would have been easy to pick off or even to request that they not be included to begin with, so that would be my recommendation based on this experience. I opted for a square plain pie, especially since I knew that a few young pups would likely be sampling the wares; seemed like an overall safe bet. Optics-wise, I thought it looked very good, and I don't regret going square here. The crust for me was probably the best part, and I made sure to strategically grab all of the corner pieces once we started eating. Nice crisp to it for sure. The overall taste of the pie just wasn't my thing. I wasn't crazy about the sauce (maybe another argument for the vodka sauce, right?) and the cheese was just okay. Tasted to me more like generic by the slice pizza, which isn't my preference. My top-tier chum liked it more than I did, so definitely could just be an issue with palate preference here but this might have suffered from inflated expectations. I'd give them another shot if a similar circumstance presented itself, but I'd go with the pie it's known for - there's a reason the Drunken Grandma is front and center in almost every review. Learn from me.

The hostess was pleasant and our server was nice, other interactions not so much. We were asked by a runner maybe with no enthusiasm what we wanted to drink. We had a wine bottle on the table and clearly needed wine glasses. The food was underwhelming. We had the exact same order we had last time and the short rib pasta my husband had was just ok. My Brooklyn chicken parm was good, could have used more sauce and the spaghetti served with it was about 2 minutes away from Al dente. It was so hard. I told the server and she asked if I wanted it cooked more?? And left saying she will see what she can do. The same runner dude came out and was basically like "what's going on?" I said my spaghetti isn't cooked and he asked if I "want it taken back and cooked more or another dish". Ummm I'm not sure how to cook spaghetti more. I asked for another serving. Even the people sitting next to us were dumbfounded by the interaction. Like were they going to take it back and rinse it off and reboil it. Any way. We were disappointed. Next time we may just order take out or try the pizzas.

Don't order and then leave to wander around outside like I did because 6 minutes means 6 minutes. Good salty mozz, chewy thin crust. And he's right, you need to eat it hot. The rest of the pizza was not so great cold and reheated, those thin slices are a joy of the moment thing not to be revisited. But on the upside, I view the thin slices as really like eating half a standard regular slice, so go for as many as you can manage. This is one of the Jersey greats that is rarely mentioned, try it out.

But honestly, I came here for 1 thing, and 1 thing only: Chicken Parm. The Chicken Parm was a nice portion, cooked perfectly, tasty sauce and the cheese melted perfectly. Its appearance was picturesque, and I did take a picture of it. Now my complaint, the piece of chicken was really flat, thin and incredibly dense/tough. My perfect chicken in a Parm is thicker and delicate, almost airy. This was not, and for $28, I will not be back! Then $5 for a fountain drink and $5 for a plain simple salad globbed with Caesar dressing, VERY POSSIBLY store bought, sad! The side of pasta is in my attached picture but really not worth mentioning as it was that forgettable! So I'm still in search for my 'go to' chicken parm place for that area! Suggestions appreciated!!!

Had dinner here a few weeks ago and WOW Montclair really is not giving up its title for best food…read morecity anytime soon. We're still slowly working our way through local spots, and Brick + Dough was highly recommended to us. We started with garlic knots, bread, and fries, and honestly... 10/10 across the board. Everything was SO good. The fries especially are still living rent free in my head. We then split three pizzas, all of which were seriously incredible. The perfect balance of cheese, sauce, and crust, just absolutely nailed. We ended the night with cookies and ice cream, and I can confidently say this place will be seeing me again very, very soon. It might even end up replacing our current go-to pizza spot...

The service was nice, especially because even though we were the only table sitting outside, they were consistently coming out to make sure we were doing OK and had everything we needed. We ordered some garlic knots, which were good, it just seemed a little bit pricey to charge for the marinara sauce separately, which was not really outstanding nor something special, so I would recommend you skip it. We also ordered the chicken vodka Parm pie which was very good. The chicken was very crispy and the pizza was still delicious the next day when we had the leftovers. One of her friends is allergic to gluten, so it was very nice that they were able to accommodate for her. I do wanna point out that we have been to many places that offer gluten-free options and this is the first one I've been to that does charge you extra to make a gluten-free. In terms of price, it is very similar to the other places in Montclair but they do provide very good service and the ambience both outside and inside is very nice.

"Go on and do it, do it, do it till you're satisfied (whatever it is) PIZZA, do it till you're…read moresatisfied" LOL. For me it takes a whole lot of Pizza to satisfy this guy's cravings so the good thing about Frank's Trattoria is it's Thin Crust style, and that just means I get to devour more of it, LOL. Details: their Traditional Cheese Slice is on point with a very tasty one-of-a-kind Sauce to it and is topped with a delicious Mozzarella blend that brings it all together. I've also tried both their Chicken Fajita and Pepperoni Slices which were outstanding in every way possible. Frank's definitely doesn't skimp on either quality or quantity when it comes to Toppings and Ingredients here that's for sure. Interior Dinning space is clean, comfortable, and spacious plus you'll find plenty of parking available in the shared lot out front. And I'm not sure they beat the quality (but I don't live here to try them all in a short span for comparison). * Service. We ordered large, then realized the large at Frank's is 16" but the large at Frank is 18". (Yes, you'll find Frank's and Frank in the same town.) Called back and upgraded to an extra large without a problem. * Quality. You get a good amount of ingredients on each slice, they don't skimp or overload. I think they balanced the multiple toppings well, though didn't notice the garlic among the other ingredients (again, not my order). * Taste. I'm a pizza snob, so from the bottom up: Good quality crust, proportioned correctly. Very nice sauce. Too much cheese and especially tasted too mozzarella for me - everyone's got a different blend. And maybe the most anchovies I've seen as a topping - not even the only topping on a slice here. So I would say it's a positive experience overall!
