Pillows that were flat and felt like cardboard we Had a crazy window right at the front door, looking in from the street. Anyone could just pop their head up there and look at you while you're in bed. Very creepy and weird. Not to mention light blaring in from all of the windows booked for four nights for over $400 a night and was just absolutely awful. Not one piece of art in this room, air conditioning leaking, dripping down the walls. Place smells musty. The vinyl wood floors are scuffed up in 10 different places. Just a really plain, awful room. And not typical. Some of the other rooms are amazing, but do not book in this one for sure. We will now be looking for other accommodations in Key West. The staff offered us a discount on our future booking instead of giving some sort of concession for this terrible stay we had and not being able to sleep. They also told us we could not move rooms, that there were no other rooms available, and the place appeared to be very empty to us. We never saw more than five people at a time in the pool or common areas.

It sits on its own beach and is very quiet and serene. Breakfasts were an "event" with hot egg and meat breakfast dishes, fresh fruit and a variety of breads along with juice and bottomless coffee served in an atrium that was open to the skies and full of rocks and plants. The Barnacle is now under new ownership and the atmosphere has changed dramatically. We recently stayed there for six nights, from a Tuesday to the next Monday. Gone are the varied colors, rocks and plants. The atrium is now roofed over and has all the charm of a high-school cafeteria. The color is primarily beige as is the experience. Breakfast is now serve-yourself cold continental. Saturday and Sunday were "special" because, without any warning, explanation, apology or compensation, there was no breakfast at all. Not a scrap to be found nor anyone from management or staff to provide it. We were left completely alone to our own devices. Good luck. There are some other changes to the Barnacle as well, specifically the posted warnings "This property is under 24-hour surveillance" with cameras to boot. There's even one on the rooftop sundeck which seems not only intrusive but not a little bit creepy as well. All this was ours for the premium price of $450 per night. They get two stars because it was clean, the AC in the room worked and the bed was comfortable. But that's where the "good news" ends. Over the years, we've recommended to many people that they should stay at the Barnacle. Now, and it pains us to say this, we have to recommend you don't.

Stayed September 2018 for 2 nights and again in 2019 for 3 nights. Suites vary in size - we stayed in the Old Town suite. Clean, well stocked and extremely comfortable . We took advantage of the fridge, microwave and cooktop - one suite has a FULL kitchen and private pool! The owner, Mark, was extremely hospitable and knew of hidden gems - non obtrusive. The place is an older home divided into multiple suites many having connecting doors and is available to rent as whole which would be fantastic for a family reunion!! We went both years mid September which is pretty quiet in Key West so we had whole place to ourselves. We will be back for sure - it's an experience to be had!!

We couldn't due to flights, work, and pet care already arranged. He then informed us he needed to cancel our final night due to "maintenance," but refused to explain what the maintenance was or consider rescheduling it. They did book us another hotel for the final night, which was nice, but it was about $100 less per night than what we originally paid, the room was much smaller and didn't have any of the amenities we had originally paid for-and we were not refunded the difference. We were required to check out at 11 AM (only extended to 1 PM after I asked twice), even though the new hotel's check-in wasn't until 3 PM. I had to arrange early check-in myself to avoid being stranded in Key West with luggage. We also had to pay for our own transportation and lost a large part of our afternoon packing and relocating. No apology or gesture of goodwill was offered. Further, despite being given a 1pm check out, the owner started calling me at 12:30pm asking if we were out yet, making us feel rushed and adding another layer of unhospitality to our experience. He THEN told me to be sure to leave a tip! Are you kidding? Additionally, the hand soap in the bathroom was watered down, and most concerning, the private pool deck -- one of the main reasons we booked -- was severely caving in and felt unsafe to walk on. I'm attaching photos of that. We were not informed of its condition before we booked. I've since requested a partial refund (50% of the final night) due to the inconvenience and price difference, but the owner has not responded to my emails or text.

I'll start with the positives and then get to the negatives and rank them in order. Positives: 1. The palm trees and lush vegetation. 2. The decorations for pride and their 50th anniversary. 3. The food is still reasonably good, although the prime rib came out cold. 4. The rooms have been generally remodeled to be more modern. Negatives: 1. The room is cool in the morning, warms up by late afternoon, is hot by 9 PM, and doesn't start to cool back off until 2:30 AM. 2. The bar staff plays Spanish music only all day until you ask the front desk to have it switched to English to which the bar staff takes offense. 3. The bar staff is more interested in watching the FIFA soccer tournament than actually waiting on any guests. 4. The further you went back into the room away from the front door the weaker the Wi-Fi signal got until there was no signal. 5. The soap dispenser leaked onto the towels hanging on the towel bar below it. Instead of having it fixed, the towels were put on the floor. 6. The gang shower between the gym, indoor Jacuzzi, and steam room area smells like sewage. 7. The sitting area above the stairway and at the end of the hall next to room 210 is covered in and reeks of pigeon feces. See attached pic. Although the front desk and management are responsive, it used to be that these things were taken care of without guests needing to point them out or request they be fixed. Not sure if it's due to staff turnover and/or management turnover but hopefully this review will be taken seriously and help future guests as we will not be coming back anytime soon. My overall rating is a 1 because the negatives far outweigh the positives in importance for the price you pay. And when prices are raised, you would expect the service level would raise as well or at least stay the same, which, in this case has not. Please remember that you're in the HOSPITALITY SERVICE industry. This is basically lipstick on a pig.

It was just my husband and I staying here for 2 weeks, and before half of the first week went by we ran out of toilet paper and paper towels. We were treated like we were really imposing on them to request enough for our stay. We also requested the linens be changed and the cottage cleaned after one week which created a complete uproar. Were told we would need to have the "dog" sheets put on the bed if we wanted them changed. These are sheets used by people who rent with dogs. The boat does not have a bimini top as pictured, or a ladder to get in and out. We had to purchase an umbrella and ladder. Kitchen is not even stocked with basics such as wraps and foils etc. First Aid kit is stocked with items that expired in 2005, or earlier. Plan on doing alot of shopping for items you would expect to be there There are lots of really nice places for rent in Marathon. Don't waste your money. Look around!
