Located right inside the mall, on the second level, this Dollar store is DA BOMB!…read more In fact, I"ll be honest: I didn't even know there were ANY dollar stores downtown Calgary. To find out that this store is not only downtown but located right next door to yet ANOTHER dollar store was like music to my ears. I needed a random couple of things and lucky for me, this dollar store carried every single thing I needed. I'm a HUGE fan of dollar stores, and I'm an even bigger fan of this dollar store because, yes, you guessed it, It's downtown! Happy lunch hour shopping y'all!

This dollar store is set right beside another one on the second floor of Scotia Centre. As I said…read morein my review of the other, each one has its strengths. I like this one for all the cotchkies and random things it has. It has a great selection of kids toys, which is perfect for gifts for friends kids but also for immature joke gifts for your friends. Nerf guns are hilariously fun. They have a decent selection of electronic equipment, like computer cords and some analogue TV stuff, blank CDS and storage items. It's no future shop, but if you know what you're looking for you can save a ton of money. They also have a bigger selection of bland gift-wares than the other, including candles and canada related items, which is perfect for secret santas and travelling abroad. I recommend taking the time to go through both to scope out exactly what it is that you want.

Whoever is buying for this dollar store is doing a really great job. I don't know how they can be a small section in a mall and still seem to have everything here. The staff are really helpful here too. I think this is the first time I've ever been in a dollar store and actually had someone offer to help me find something. I'm glad they did or I would have been getting lost in here for hours. They're located just inside the south entrance to the mall, making it super easy to use this store as a stand alone, not needing to waste all the time wandering through North Hill. Not the biggest dollar store in town, but in my opinion, the best in the area.

We all know what to expect, or not expect for that matter, when we walk into a Dollar Store. The…read moreservice, the layout, the presentation and the organization normally leave a lot to be desired but since the pricing makes up for it, we 're easily appeased. But imagine how heavenly a dollar store could be if it actually HAD all the elements of organization, layout and presentation, along with the discounted pricing! Well, no need to imagine it any longer. Ironically, when I walked in, 'Imagine' by the Beatles was playing, and this should have been my first clue that this Dollar Store experience was going to be unlike any other I've ever had. Music in a dollar store??!? THE BEATLES in a dollar store?!?! Fer Real?!?! But it just kept getting better! The entire feel of the store is different. It's layout is circular/bubble-like in that it's not square and boring and everything is organized according to categories and sections (ie: Sewing Notions, Hardware, Body Shoppe, Hair accessories, Stationary, etc.). The store, unlike traditional dollar stores, is inviting and it makes you forget where you're shopping! This dollar store was a breath of fresh air and I'm officially a fan! If you haven't been yet, check it out. The track list alone is worth the visit!

Ah, so this is what they mean by party favours. It's not contraband after all, but rather, crepe…read morepaper. That explains the unpleasantness at my niece's birthday party - an honest mistake. What there is no mistaking, however, is that Canuck Amusements has a massive selection of party decorations. I came in looking to rent a helium tank. All they had were the big tanks for $80/day. A big tank is totally not what I needed, way to big in fact. The guy helping me suggested one of the disposable helium tanks... but those are crap. The balloons last for like 2 hrs before they start floating down to the ground. 3 if you're lucky. Anyway, this is where the staff member launched into an explanation about what makes your balloons last a really long time. He took me over to their helium tank and proceeded to show me the extra latex coating they use to coat every balloon (which apparently helps the balloon stay afloat for like 3-5 days). I was thankful for the extra info, and for the fact that he didn't try and talk me into renting the tank anyway. He did apologize for not having what I needed and suggested maybe trying Praxair for my own tank if I were going to use it often. Anyway, customer service like that can be hard to find. You'll see me checking out Canuck again sometime for other party things!

Designer Depot seems to have taken the Winners concept, designer brand at depot prices, and applied…read moreto it their signs, but that's about where it ends. There's nothing designer here. Don't expect to find designer goods at marked down prices. You will only find brands you've never heard of before at fictionally marked down prices. "The comparable value on the on the price ticket or sign shows you the price another retailer charges or would likely charge for the same or comparable value item." So according to the sign, these items aren't necessarily sold anywhere else, nor have they ever been sold successfully by a business for more money. They have tags that make them look like they've been marked down but they never have been. Feels a bit deceptive, doesn't it? Further more, this store has had a "closing sale" for years now. How long do you get to run a going out of business sale, before that's just your business' regular price? They've recently brought in new winter stock that they merchandize on displays at the front like any other retail. Are you really having a going out of business sale when you're bringing new items every week? Seems like a scam, folks. Well, that and an excuse to have the place be a complete mess. That said... I bought an ugly Christmas sweater. If you can block out all of the sale nonsense, there's a chance you might find something for cheap that is worth the amount of money you will pay. Yes, the quality is cheap too, but it might be worth it. In this instance, $20 for a low quality Christmas sweater seemed worth it to me. So when you see row of suits on for $70 with a sign next to them that says "compare at $350," just know that those suits have never been sold for $350 anywhere - merely that somewhere out there, there's a store that sells $350 suits. Throw that large number away and look at the final price compared with the quality of the clothing and you still might find something worth wearing. But if you're in the market for inexpensive clothing above all else, I think you'd be better off shopping at Wal-Mart. At least then you know what you're getting.
